I need some real advice about trailer hitch install, please help

I have a 2012 RT Limited, i purchased an aftermarket trailer hitch and had it installed on my Spyder, now i am trying to get the wiring purchased and installed, told by dealer that in order to protect my warranty i had to have a BRP hitch and wiring assembly installed. So, now i have an appointment for monday to remove the after market hitch and install a new BRP hitch and wiring module, but i am readingthat the 2013 has a new style wiring module, i am tired of buying something only to have to remove it and get something else.

My question to the knowledgable people on here is

When i take my Spyder to the dealer on Monday, what do i need to make sure he installs.....

Also i do not plan to pull a BRP trailer and need some advise on how to convert the wiring.

If you hae any suggestions i am all ears.

Does an aftermarket hitch void a warrenty?? and or a plug if i wier it myself without a BRP plug?????

first time i ever heard of a after market hitch voiding a warranty....also if you use a after market trailer they make a adapter wire that simply plugs in to the 9 pin brp wiring...i wouldnt take the hitch off..just find a dealer that acually cares about the owner...i use a trailer that is not can am specific and i purchased a 9 pin to a 4 pin flat wiring harness..my can am dealer sold them across the counter...your dealer sounds like a real jerk...sorry but he is trying to rip you off...

OK, it's time for a warranty lesson. They cannot void your warranty due to intallation of an aftermarket accessory or other modification, under the provisions of the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act and similar state laws. They can, however, refuse to warrant a particular failure that they can show caused or was aggravated by an unauthorized modification. The risk is yours, but if the modification is done carefully, the risk is usually small. The pain and agony may also be yours, as you try to educate the Bozos in the letter of the law. Their bullying tactics are common. Sometimes it is just easier to go along with their BS. They can refuse to do a non-authorized installation at any time.

There are two 2013 trailer modules...one for 2013 and prior RTs to 2013 trailers, and one for 2013 ST to the 2013 trailer. Both have a square-4 connector. You will probably have to change your trailer plug (or the BRP plug) to match if you have a flat-4. If you have a 5-pole trailer, you will need to rewire the trailer to 4-wire...or tap into the Spyder wiring anyway. What you need depends on what you have. If I was doing it, I would keep the aftermarket hitch and find someone to wire the thing for you, risking the remote possibility of failure. Wiring in an isolator would be even better, it you can find the right one for your application.

THE NASTY THINGS I READ

I love both my Spyders ....I love BRP...But I have to say I think too many of the dealer's I here about here just plain "*uck"because of the B.S. they they try to pull with respect to their customers...There are consumer laws that do protect you against these types ...."Magnuson-Moss " act
comes to mind.....just sayin.....Mike.......Good Luck

Would you have the part number for this 9 pin to 4 pin adapter? I purchased the 710002442 - Can-AmPole Harness and added the flat 4-pin end. Would have been easier had there been an actual cable that plugs into the RT then to the trailer plug.

The only 9-pin to 4-pin adapter that I know of that BRP sells adapts a 9-pin trailer to a flat-4 tow vehicle...not the other way around.

You know BRP is not going to make something that will allow us to bypass their products. I would guess you will NEVER see a hitch adapter that allows the use of an aftermarket trailer.

The trailer that i have has a flat four plug, i dont have any idea where to find someone that can wire the bike, my dealer refuses to do the wiring, he says the hitch and wiring are sold and installed as one unit. I live in the Little Rock area of Arkansas and if anyone knows someone in this or a close proximity of this area i would appreciate it if you could point me that way.

The dealer said that BRP could refuse to warrant certain items if i used a non BRP trailer and wiring, i am six months into a four year warranty.

Suggestions???

The dealer is using half truths to try to buffalo you. While BRP could, under certain circumstances, refuse to warrant certain items, it is unlikely unless they can show there is a direct connection to the failure. Without a cooperative dealer, though, you could have an uphill battle if something happened.

Are you capable of removing the bodywork yourself to expose the wiring? If so, you could get a trailer shop near you to wire up a Hopkins or other compatible 5-to-4 converter to feed your trailer. I would recommend an isolating converter if there is one available in that configuration. The trailer shop would know what I mean. They will not be able to remove the bodywork, so you would have to find a shop that would let you do that part, while they did the rest.

Another trailer shop option would be for the shop to add separate turn lights to the trailer, and wire it for 5-wire. They can then directly connect a 5-wire pigtail to the Spyder, although I still recommend an isolator.

Your other option is to let your dealer remove your existing hitch and install the 2013 BRP module and their hitch. You/they/the trailer shop would then have to wire a square-4 plug to your trailer or change the plug on the module to a flat-4. Hate to reward them for their bullying, but it really is the easiest solution.

A more cooperative dealer could do the job any of these ways, but obviously they are unwilling. You now have a choice to make. The moral of this story is that the cheapest way out isn't always the easiest. I wish you the best of luck. Maybe an area SpyderLover can come to your rescue.

Thanks for your input, i really do appreciate the help that you and all the other folks on here lend to the rest of us.

:agree: This is what I was thinking and why I did my own.

Based on this post from Rock I thought I might have been wrong and he knew something that I had not seen.

If you have BRP install the wiring on your bike, they will install a male square 4 pin plug. You can go to a trl shop and get a Hopkins 4 pin female plug for about $10 and have them wire it to your trl. It worked for me.

I guess we took the easy way out. I really liked the 622 trailer and was lucky enough for Len to find me one in Viper Red. I've had a lot of wiring questions in this forum and got the right answers.
Thank God that Scotty has time to read and answer most of them. I wish you the best on your project!

trailer

i purchased the trailer hitch off of ebay and installed it on my bike my self

i then purchased the plug wire drops from tricled to wire the lights myself got the plug for the turn signals and the brakes to tie in the the harness they sell them for installing lights on the factory harness DSC_5188.jpg

not sure if these work on rt but for rs these worked fantastic to make my own harness

i put in a 5 pin strait from the connections and a 5 to 4 converter i wired in to use a 4 flat trailer

i have been to a couple different dealers since nobody said anything about warranty issues

I would be more than happy to pay someone local to wire this Spyder for me, Anyone in the area have the time and knowledge to do this????:dontknow:

If you can't find anybody else, have the dealer wire the bike, and a trailer shop wire the trailer. Ignore what your dealer told you about the hitch.

Look in the current 2013 catologue, they sell a replacment harness for the trailer that mates to the bike harness for under $40.

The OP has an aftermarket trailer, so the RT-622 adapter harness will be of no real value. He also has no bike harness...that's what teh dealer is trying to force him into.

Take it for a ride

Wait 'til Len gets open next month & take it for a ride to Ozark, MO. That's just a few miles from Little Rock, right?
