How well does the Spyder do in a crash?

Questions

Not going to post all the details just yet, but short story is guy ran a stop sign and caused a collision that did a lot of front end damage to the bike. I'll give the Spyder credit, the outcome would have been a lot different for someone on a motorcycle.

Driver tried to flee the scene but I managed to catch him and bring him back. Among other things, trunk is destroyed, front sub-frame is bent, front suspension is bent, power steering not working, and bike went into limp-home mode.

In my experience, a two-wheeled machine with the same kind of damage would instantly be a loss and totaled by the insurance company. I'm waiting on them to get their ducks in a row and send out an adjuster.

I know it's tough to judge without seeing the bike, but looking through the parts fiche there seems to be an awful lot of stuff that could be bent or broken. My concern is that if they elect to attempt a repair, there's a lot that could be missed unless they pull the whole front end off and rebuild it. Even then, I'm not sure how I'd feel about it.

Anyone have a similar experience?

I got T-boned on the RT while parked at a gas station last Monday :gaah:(detailed on another thread) and I agree with you! If I had been on 2 wheels, that Yukon would have either pushed me completely over and/or into/through the gas pump.

Other than cosmetic (where the trailer hitch made contact with the side panel, where my ankle had been), after the dealer checked it out, the only damage was the bent fender mounts. :2thumbs:

I was highly impressed and thankful that I was on 3 wheels!

Very glad to hear that you are okay after the collision, and actually able to catch the other driver as well. I am sure your dealer will be in contact with BRP to make sure they don't miss anything, if the insurance company doesn't decide to total it. Best of luck with the entire process.

someone crashed me on the back - when i stopped on a red light .."only" some ribs on my back & a lot of discussion with the insurance company..
hope to be back in 2-3 weeks (on a spyder..)
do they have to pay for a complete rear wheel - the frame aso.. - hope BRP will "help" me ..

(a 20y girl in our street had the same crash with a bike - seats in a wheelchair now)

From what I have read so far it would appear that the Spyder is a strong platform and can take battle damage much better than a standard bike. Not surprising though when you look at the chassis layout and frame construction. I like it! It looks strong and It makes me feel pretty good!

The fact that those that have reported wrecks and came out OK is extremely satisfying to hear as well.

I think part of it may be the "crumple" aspect of the plastic and such... Must absorb a lot of the energy and also keeps a lot of physical bike between you and the offending driver.

:agree: Defintely a factor as well to be sure. Definitely a factor. I am an excellent driver... gotta go to Kmart now!! :roflblack: :roflblack: :roflblack: Sorry man, lost myself there for a minute!!

What I meant to say was, I concur with your assessment! Every bit of separation a cat can get is a good thing! ANd I think the tupperware does absorb some energy. Good observation!

I am glad that no body got hurt. But I am also glad that you caught the guy. He needs to be resposible for what he did. These Spyders are really good for people who want to ride. They can hold there own and take heavy hits. I am glad you are alright. Thank God!

Kathy  :congrats:

Thanks for the input everyone.

Glad I was able to catch him too. I was on a GSAdv, not the Spyder.

The Spyder limped the short distance home, but it's really not in any condition to be driven. It has a severe pull to the left now, which is why I think that a whole lot of stuff is bent.

The lousy part is that the Mrs. and I were supposed to do a week long vacation in Oct on our bikes. :(

I doubt this issue will be settled by then, no matter which route insurance goes. There's a chance that they'll cover a rental. Might check with the dealer and see if they'd let a demo go for a week. Hopefully they'll try to help out considering they're going to get a major rebuild or a follow-up customer for a new machine.

Glad the Spyder Ryder is okay (was it your wife on the Spyder?). The guy is lucky he didn't get a good beatdown!

I've heard of around 10 Spyder-Deer crashes and the worst injury was a spranged wrist.. take 10 two-wheeler crashes with a deer and you'd have far worse injuries....

Trunk becomes crimple zone----- :2thumbs:

I ran over a trailer jack that had dropped on the road.. the frame was damaged when the jack caught underneath...but was driveable.. my insurance company totaled the Spyder... and later sold it on Copart auction for $9000..

I rear ended a car and my RT-S has been in the shop for four weeks. Will get it back tomorrow with a new DPS. It was a slow impact which did no damage to the car but did about $2800 worth of damage to the tupperware. No mechanical damage whatsoever to the trike or me. Unfortunately two points on the license and $225. Boohoo! Stuff happens.

Good news from the insurance company...they're going to accept full responsibility for their client.

Bad news is that I crawled under the bike today and it looks like the main frame is buckled in two places. :sour:

Going to trailer it over to the dealer tomorrow so that they can look at it and advise the adjuster. No idea what the payout will be if they total it, but it's undoubtedly going to cost out of pocket to replace it. :gaah:

The Mrs. also wants her yellow bike back. I guess if it comes down to it, we'll have to search for a leftover.

Best of luck with everything.

BRP usues that SST design for these; right? I've seen some of their ATVS absolutely wadded-up after front end impacts... Nothing beats a boxed frame for strength!

She's totaled. :(

Not sure if we're going to replace it yet. Can only find one yellow and it's more than I paid for it last year. :sour:

I might have the touring windshield and passenger backrest for sale soon. Keep an eye on the classifieds if interested. Neither were on the bike during the accident.

Sorry to hear it was totalled. Best of luck finding another yellow one at a decent price.
