How to remove panels and more

Hello all,

1. Just bought my new 2011 Spyder RT-S? (it has no clutch lever). I would like to remove the dash panel (the part that the rocker switches mount in), can anyone point me to or provide information? It looks as if the side panels must be removed first, is this correct? After that?

2. I see that the side panels have center pins inside the Torx opening. I could not find anything in the tool kit but the manual suggests this is included for road side emergencys?

3. The manual says I can use my MP3 player (Walkman) but the cable that comes with the bike is for an Ipod, am I missing an adapter?

1. To remove the panel that has the rocker switches does require a fair amount of removal. Not just the side panels on the RT but also the glove box. There are links on the site to help with that and links to places where you can download the shop manual that describes how to do it (I paid about $20 for my manual). Others can help with the existing posts to help with removing the sides. I'm lacking that bit from my cell phone .

2. DO NOT REMOVE THE TORX YOU DESCRIBE. On the other side are alignment pins. These particular TORX need to stay right where they are. Again, the shop manual will help a lot.

3. You are not missing anything. All that can be done right now for a generic MP3 player is to connect the mini audio plug on the adapter cable to the earphone jack of your MP3. There are other options once you feel adventurous and want to wire a few things .

With the RT-S you should have gotten 2 cables. One for the IPod and one with the mini audio plug that Phil mentioned.

Not trying to be a nerd, but maybe a visit to your dealer would be beneficial. If you take the questions you may have, a hands on experience with the dealer would be productive. Also, before you go, read the owner's manual thoroughly. Many of the questions people ask on this forum are answered in the manual. All it takes is the time to read. Don't just look for what interests you.

I thought I was missing something, I will call the dealer tomorrow if they are open. I did a bit of searching before I posted but I did not find anything about the upper panel removal, any one able to direct me.

if the torx are not to be removed, how do I remove that panel?

I tried this weekend on that as well. Never opened the shop manual, but boy... Removed all four bolts and pulled out of the two tabs... I have the Headset Jack there as well. It looked like I needed to unscrew that to gain access... But I was afraid the jack would fall and cause me hours of stress trying to get it screwed back into place... I left it for another day :gaah::roflblack:

2. Tap into the speaker wiring to install a 1/8" jack to plug my headset into
3. Understand the bike future work

Randy, I think this may have been discussed in some previous threads. I tried finding, but to no avail. You might try searching the general discussion threads on this issue. I couldda sworn that it was discussed though. Sorry I wasn't of any more help.

No problem, I really appreciate all of your assistance. I have tried a lot of differnent searchs and did find some related to installing accesories but nothing on the switch panel removal. From what I have learned the side panels must come off first in any case. I may be able to see up from below once they come off.

I am a mechanic in my former life and I do a lot design and machinist work as a hobby. I am very well experienced in electrical systems and used to do custom electrical wiring for show cars about 30 years ago. I am not intimdated with anything mechancial but I do know a few hours research can save a of time and money, lol.
