How long should it take a BRP trained Spyder technician to install brp HD headl

Hi All,

Questions - does BRP give an estimated time for installation of BRP headlights ? I'm asking because we were just charged 4 hours for an install and I had thought it was closer to 2.5/3 hours.

Can anyone point me in the right direction to find out the information.

Any help appreciated.

Sorry to say but they saw you coming. I am not a trained BRP mechanic and I could do it in an hour and still have time to chat. Its a very easy install.

The first question is,

"how much time does BRP allow for the job?" Almost all good techs can beat the flat rate time. That is the way they earn their money. If there is a flat rate time, that is what they charge. It should also be what they charge when the tech takes longer. If you have any mods which MAY interfere with the flat rate time, you will be charged extra.

Had both headlight bulbs replaced last summer on the 2010. One hour labor and 2 bulbs.

If your talking the driving lights, that's was about 2 hrs on the 2011.

We complained to the manager in Hooksett, NH when we spoke to the other local dealership Concord,NH where we bought the bike from and have a service contract the said 2 -2.5 hours is what they charge. We have a remote control harness mounted In the trunk for our tricleds they needed to undue to take off trunk they said but that wouldnt have added on 1.5 hours. This is the first electrical mod Jake hasn't done himself and we paid to have done because of time. We had both our bikes there yesterday - my RSS and Jakes Harley.

We also drove by the shop at 2:15 yesterday and it was still outside where we parked it and drove by again at 5:15 pm and it was complete back outside in its parking space. We live about 6 miles from the dealer. So, I mean at the most 3 hours. I do know it's not a women thing since my significant other dropped it off, went it, gave them the parts, paid, etc.... Manager is going to talk to the technicians and when we pick up Jakes Harley from them on Monday hopefully they will adjust the labor hours to a reasonable amount. We are good clients, spend a lot of money of mods, gear, etc... So hopefully they'll work with us.

We have all our aftermarket parts done by them ( adjustable handlebars, handbrake, etc ...) and we really do like this dealership. The dealership we bought from in Concord, NH won't due certain modifications due to safety concerns so we ended up using the Hooksett, NH dealer for all those modifications since they had no issues with doing them.Plus, their hourly rate is less then our Concord, NH dealer we use for oil changes, and service due to our prepaid service contract. We wish we hadn't bought a service contract at the Concord, NH dealer because we'd give the Hooksett, NH dealer all our business. Our next Spyder will most likely be from them as well and we are good clients of the Hooksett, NH dealer so I'm hoping they'll at least cut the labor hours to 3.

Thanks everyone for your responses :)

I'll be interested to hear the outcome. I purchased in Hampstead, NH but just had an alignment done by the Hooksett dealer. I was impressed by their professionalism and was planning on using them for any further maintenance.

 I'm sorry to say this...
If they don't provide you with an adjustment to that bill; you need to find another shop! :gaah:

Get with the service manager or the store manager tell him your thoughts and you want to do business with him, but, and you know the rest of the story ;)

We've used this dealer in Hooksett, NH since 2011 and have never had an issue until today. Their work has always been above par, they've been quick to get us in for appointments in emergencies, and have always done what other shops wouldn't or couldn't do locally. So even if they won't change our rate on this job we will still use them but make sure we get time quotes when we book appointments and hold them to those quotes. Our dealer in Concord, NH is good as well but won't do some of the more safety concerned upgrades, handlebars or brakes and there shop time is more expensive. I believe they'll make it right though - we've been good customers and I'd don't think they'll squabble over an hour of shop time we are asking for.

You should always get an estimate of what the work is going to cost. If they are using flat rate that I'd what they will charge. In most places they are only allowed to exceed estimate by a certain percentage.

Ask to see their flat rate book for changing headlight bulbs and it should only be slightly higher to wire in and mount the transformers.

Sorry to hear that you got the coals poured to you on the install. I'm pretty certain I did it in less than 3 hours myself and reading the directions step by step.

No.... That is not true. The headlight housings have to be removed and replaced with the ones included in the kit and you have to remove the frunk to install the ignition boxes.

That's something that you should retrieve from them...
If you ever had trouble with the part; it's good to have that information.

Well, just wanted to give an update the Hooksett NH dealership refunded 1 hour worth of shop time but did insist that because of our LED modifications that the job did take longer. Since we spend quite a bit of money at the shop on both our bikes, $800.00 plus this week alone I think they would just rather then keep her as customers so we agreed on three hours of shop time. I'm okay with this but I will be asking for time quotes from now on just so I can know around what to expect.

The Concord NH dealership is finished with my oil change and inspection sticker under my service contract I bought in 2011 so I can pick it up whenever is convenient :)

Hopefully that's the end of the time it needs to be in the dealership this summer :) time for NH to get warm so we came ride !
