How do you explain what riding is like?

My story is, my bike has been down for a paint project on it for the last 2 months. My wife today while we were out and about asked why, when she has asked if I'm OK do i want to go out and take a ride in the truck, i say I'm OK but as soon as the bike is back its me asking if she wants to go for a ride on the bike. i tried to explain it is a different experience, on the bike you are in the elements, in the truck its just the truck. She replied I've ridden with you on the bike its the same thing, i said no its not. i explained it as an event unto its self, not the same as in a car. she didn't get it. Any words of wisdom out there?

I tell people that driving a vehicle is like standing in the kitchen and looking out the window. Riding is like opening the window, sticking my head out and feeling the sun on my face and smelling everything while enjoying the unobstructed views.

Tip from my Wife

:shemademe_smilie:....Best guess would be the difference between buying a new Dress and buying a used Dress.
They both do the job, but the New Dress looks and feels very exciting.

That's what my lovely wife said and she wouldn't tell you anything else.

Yes Slice hit the nail on the head, but the dress is a better way to go I think, as hut1 said; do not disagree with the wife, and no she doesn't want her own she doesn't even want to learn how to drive it

Riding offers a sense of freedom that no enclosed vehicle like a car or truck, or even a convertible can offer. I liken it to the feeling that I had a long, long time ago riding a horse out into the desert north of El Paso, TX by myself. The sense of independence and freedom of those rides, with the power of that animal beneath me but under my control was exhileating. When I first rode a motorcycle it reminded me of those horseback rides and still does everytime I go out for a ride. I have that powerful machine under me, waiting for me to decide where to take it and how to take it there. I am exposed to the elements and in touch with the feel, the smells and the sounds of the world around me rather than being separated from all of that by steel and glass. Riding on a quiet country road all by myself on a warm summer morning gives me almost the exact same feeling that I had amost 60 years ago riding that horse out into the quiet desert.

I am fortunate that my wife loves to ride with me, but I am the one usually asking her to take a break from the hectic lives we built for ourselves and take a ride. Once out, she enjoys it as much as I do (as long as it is warm enough!).

To others, I try to explain it like your favorite song, or playing with your dog, or whatever makes them happiest. Each of us probably has a different way to describe it, and each of our discriptions are probably a little the same. I think that is why we are here.

If all else fails, invite your significant other to spend a few minutes on these forums, and they will realize what they got themselves into!!

The real difference is between the riders seat and the drivers seat. The rider may not feel the connection in either a truck or on the Spyder like the driver does. The driver definitely can feel the difference as control and responsibility are at a different level.
