How critical is the oil dip stick O ring?

Just checked my oil. Not sure if the O ring fell off or not. Damned if I can find it.
I've emailed my dealer ( it's after hours now ), to get one if I need one.

My question;
How critical is the O ring. Could I ride the bike for about 1/2 an hour to the dealer?
Can the O ring be bought at a home depot type store?

Don't want a geyser of oil and damages.

Any 0 ring that fits will work, The oil tank is not under high pressure.

My O-ring sticks to the opening of the hole, and comes off the dip stick. Looks like it is part of the oil tank opening. Look for it, as it might be there. I have had this happen every-time I check my oil.

I remember Lamonsters video on checking oil and panel removal where he mentioned the O ring.
And I've tried to be careful.
But I did just pull off the panel and check again. It's not there.
But I appreciate the thread that refers to the 1" O rings.
Looks like $1.50 will take of this minor issue.

Oil dipstick o-ring

I found my missing oil dipstick o-ring not to be stuck on the dipstick but stuck on the block. It probably split and went away when you went soth when you were looking north.

do you find that it want to bind itself to the engine block. I can never check my oil that I don't findć it stuck to the engine block!

Here's another possibility just posted from sharbill on the other thread;

Had the same thing happen to me. Looked high and lower for the o ring. Finally found the o ring laying down between the oil tank and the black tupperware. Very difficult to see and retrieve, had to use mechanical fingers to reach it.

I puiled the panel on and off several times last night out of shear frustration.
That stupid !%*#@ O Ring has Got To Be In There. SOMEWHERE ! :banghead:

But once I heard from you folks (and my mechanic ) that a 62 cent O Ring from Napa Auto Parts will solve the problem,....
The search party ended.

(Went out this afternoon for a ride with the wife. No smell of burning O Ring )

I once spent over a week looking for a screw inside my Goldwing only to lose two more and eventually find them all with some help from Ricky.

if you replace your o-ring i would defentily go to a motorcycle dealer or a auto parts store as they will be the only ones carrying high temp resistence o-rings lowes/homedepot is a good temp fix until you get a better quality one.
