Hindle question...

Alignment Specialist
I have to take my spyder in for maintenance and was going to get the hindle put on there...

1. Is this a super easy install...meaning, should I be paying them to do it?
2. Is there ANY modification to the computer system that has to be made? The dealer told me they have to tune the system once it is put on...is this true??

Anything else I need to know about it??

Thanks

dont pay to have this done its vert simple undo clamp to stock muffler remove spring take of holding bolt by right side rear foot peg remove stock muffler remove ring on pipe in stall hindle with the same way old muffler came off done after that start spyder run at idle for 15 minutes check for leaks shut it down for 15 minutes thats it enjoy the computer will readjust for pipe

my dealer put it on while i waited took about 15 minutes no charge

Easy to do.

Find another dealer. There are no adjustments to the computer / FI system available to the dealer.

So basically, it's a 'plug and play'? Take off the stock...put on the hindle...run for 15 minutes as someone said above...turn off for 15 minutes, and we're good to go?

There's no 'calibration' period or need for fancy equipment to do it properly? Since it's a slip-on, it looks easy enough to do...just wasn't sure about need for fancy computer calibration?

Thanks again...if can do on own, certainly better and cheaper!

Okay,

I decided to order the Hindle and put it on myself...there is a licensed dealer that will sell and ship it for around 430.00...this is a good deal! (this dealer will meet or beat virtually all other dealership prices)...

Thanks for eveyone's help...I just saved some money due to ya'll!

Great price! Last time I saw, dealer cost was about $430 on the pipe.

When we installed ours we made a how to video, it is in one of these forums somewhere. Here, I'll just post it again for you.

:thumbup:great price and use a little hightemp gasket maker when putting on new pipe or you will have small leak bye clamp:spyder:

The reason given for running the Hindle for 15 minutes at idle was to season the pipe I believe. When you get the Hindle, the instructions talk about the procedure. I think they also state that failing to do the 15 minute idle run could cause damage but I don't remember for sure.

As far as re-tuning your Spyder for the Hindle, your dealer may not be entirely blowing smoke. If you've got a fair amount of time on your Spyder (a few hundred miles or more), the engine computer has stored quite a bit of engine running data with the stock exhaust. You can just install the Hindle and let the computer re-learn how to best run the engine over time. However, your Spyder may run a little rougher as the Hindle may cause your engine to run a bit leaner than normal. The too lean condition will improve over time as the engine accumulates new data with the Hindle installed. You can give that process a little jump start by disconnecting the battery for about 20 minutes, allowing the old engine data to clear. Then the engine will start from scratch, accumulating and using engine data without having to overwrite the old data. Just disconnect the battery before you start removing the stock pipe and reconnect it after you have the Hindle installed.

By all means, do this install yourself. It is relatively easy to do. The hardest part may be pulling off the spring and putting it back on.

BJT,

Is there any harm in disconnecting the battery? I know how to do this on my cars (rather simple), but on the bike, I haven't even looked to see where the battery is...I'll assume it discusses this in the manual? If not, is there a 'quick and easy' for battery dis/reconnect? And again, no harm in taking the battery offline for a little while?

I've pulled the battery cables on both mine and my wife's Spyders many times now with no ill effects. There was a little spark at the cable / battery terminal when I reconnected it. Last time, while installing the wife's Bushtec hitch, their instructions had me pull the main fuse (fuse box under the seat) before removing the battery terminals. There were no sparks then.

The only negative I've seen from disconnecting the battery is that you have to reset the Spyder's clock. Until I did that three or four times, I always forgot the specific button pushes to reset it. Also, Lamonster had told me before that he usually, or was it always, disconnected his battery before working on his Spyder.

Season the pipe...What is this a freek'n Wok...just kidding, I thought seasoning the pipe was for smokers.

:agree: with BJT. The exhaust will pop a little (or more) on deceleration due to the pair valve that introduces fresh air into the stream to assist the catalytic converter. Disconecting the battery after the Hindle installation ("remapping") will make it run better.
However, just changing the muffler without any engine mods won't gain to much power, so getting a fuel management mod is a must.
Second, Hindle has a 90 days warranty if installation was done by the owner, versus a dealer (when the warranty is matching the Spyder 2 years). Based on my experience (15 k on the Spyder, 14.5 k with Hindle)and :chat: with BRP.

Sounds like even if you do it yourself, you get a better warranty through the dealer, right?

Now that docdoru mentioned it, I do vaguely remember something about the warranty. Something like the Hindle is covered by BRP in the Spyder's two year factory warranty if its installed by a dealer.
