• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. HELP Can't Get Mode to Work.

Haze

Well-known member
2013 Spyder STS SM5.
When I turn the ignition on the dash lights up as usual.
I wait for the start message.
Pull in the clutch, Step on the brake. Check the on/off switch is in the run position.
Push Mode and NOTHING happens.
I can't get past mode to start the bike.

The electric parking brake releases and engages.
Turn signals do not work.
Emergency flashers show flashing on the instrument panel but not at the turn signal lights.
In the past the turn signals worked with the ignition on but the bike not running.
Battery is charged showing 12.5V. Had it on the battery tender all night to no avail.
Key is stored out of the ignition switch and away from the bike all night.

Any ideas??
Is there a fuse or relay for the rear turn signals??
Can turn signal problems disable the operation of the Mode button??

The left handlebar control is disconnected or defective. Likely defective but easier and cheaper to check if it has been disconnected first. Does any of the backlighting of the buttons work?

Thanks for the replys.

The mode and set buttons don't work.
Turn signals don't work.
Can't remember if the backlights work. Will check.
I haven't checked the horn but will as soon I get off work.

Come to think of it, The Left Control switch was replaced by the dealer right after homecoming.
I need to look for a disconnected lead.

The Mode, Set, Directional Command buttons and turn signals are all Can bus. They are all connected to a internal circuit board. The Horn and the High/Low buttons and wired direct to their circuits. No Can bus involved. So if the horn works and the button backlighting works. The wires are not disconnected and circuit board is likely fried. Can't test the high/low button unless the engine is running. If the horn and button backlighting don't work. The harness is disconnected somewhere.

OK, I tested the buttons.
Horn works. Backlight does not work.

Looks like I need to trace the wires and look for a disconnect.

I will first try DIY to inspect the connectors if I can find them without total disassembly of the front end. Then try to find a trailer if needed. I want the original dealer to fix his screwup. Thankfully I have an extended warrantee. Every dealer is a long haul from here.
Its unfortunate as today was to be a group ride and covered bridge tour.

Any update?:dontknow::dontknow::hun: Good news I hope:pray:

I could not get easy access to the connections.
I'm waiting for the dealer to collect the Spyder on Thursday.
I will followup with their findings ASAP.

OK, the Spyder is back home and operating perfectly.
Turns out I may have been the cause of the problem. :dontknow:
My after market rear turn signals caused a short. The short blew a fuse.
The fuse took out power to the left handle bar control module.
Once the fuse was replaced the control module functioned correctly.
I can believe the short as I probably pulled on the wires trying to get slack during wiring.
Tech rewired one of the signals he said was backwards?? and now everything works.
How can an incandescent bulb be wired backwards?? The signal worked prior to the short and blown fuse.
I guess I was too caught up in looking for a bad connector that I didn't look for a fuse issue.:banghead:
Expensive lesson learned.

Ah David, many of us have been right there with you once or ....gasp, even twice... remembering the fundamental troubleshooting steps after a mod (inadvertantly) gone wrong sometimes escapes us all. We're so confident we checked that (whichever) step, and discover later that we didn't. Yea though I always recommend a written checklist, I don't always remember to use one....:banghead:
Glad you got it fixed, found out why it happened, and then shared it with us, ONE day, it will help someone else... Thank you for sharing.

Thanks....

's for following up and letting us know the outcome. But the best part is that it's home and all is well...
