A serious question please.

As I understand it the helmet must have the DOT stamp on the back of it, is this correct? In researching a few (LS2 Valiant II Jeans Titanium) I find that it has no such marking on it. I actually contacted one vender that sent me this response,

"Hi David, Please note this helmet is EEC 22-05 approved for use in the EU and UK it is not DOT certified"

To bad as I really liked this helmet. I also contacted LS2 USA but have not heard back from them.

My understanding also. Remember, I’m Canadian and our laws may be different than your laws, but I don’t think so. My understanding is the helmet MUST have at the very least a DOT rating. My helmet style choice is a half helmet. I’ve been riding since 1959, so not a newby. Hope this helps you.

I am thinking that non-certified helmets are going to be hard to find in the US. No dealer wants to get tied up in lawsuits concerning uncertified or unsafe helmets. :dontknow: Certifications do vary, but they should pass required standards. opcorn:

Just don't purchase them from them stands that also sell Rolex's for $15.00. :roflblack:

I don't believe it can be sold in the US legally without a DOT rating. Was it a US vendor you contacted? Try revzilla they should be able to answer your questions.

The helmet in question only showed up in stock outside the US. I guess I'll just check on another one. I did look on revzilla at the LS2 Valiant II and if you scroll through the pics you'll notice that on the back of most of those there is no DOT marking however when reading the specs it is the last thing listed. I do understand that they just use stock photos from the manufacturer who is in Spain I believe. More than likely they have US helmets and then others for the other countries.

If they can legally ship it to you its probably dual rated as DOT/ECE. Just pay attention to the sizing - Euro gear tends to run smaller. For example I bought a AGV helmet and according to Revzilla if I took a “L” in Shoei I need to order an “XL” for AGV- I bought XL and it fits perfectly. Same thing when I bought an Alpinestar jacket.

I used to wear a Snell certified helmet that was not DOT labeled. Snell has slightly higher safety ratings due to 'racing venues' and ECC is also supposedly higher rated than DOT. I wouldn't think twice about buying off-shore IF you know the fit will be correct. Exchanging for a different size could get expensive with shipping.

Ok, at the risk of starting a no-ending helmet thread, I chose not to mention what you just stated. So tag, you're it you started it. In my research and to my knowledge no one's ever been cited for a non-DOT helmet. However, when harassing the HA's and other outlaw groups I'm sure that section was used as PC for further detainment. But I'm guessing the DA's through them out. My last helmet purchase was tested by ECE. And at that time ECE had a slightly higher rating than DOT. It may have changed by now but the reason for the higher rating was the testing procedure. In short, DOT testing procedures could allow a flawed helmet to make it to the consumer without being caught. ECE procedures would detect a flawed helmet before it reached the consumer. My helmet is a Shark EVO3 which is more oval-shaped than the EVO2's so as to better fit the North American's heads. Any of the rated helmets from Snell to DOT would be a good choice. Just make sure it's one of them and not a chop-shop look alike.

try a search on the helmet you like by typing the manufacturer and helmet name then US equivalent. this might bring up the same helmet but with a different name. helmets are not always named the same from country to country.
