• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

Heated Clothing and the Spyder Electrics

I don't own any yet. I'm trying to figure out what I would be able to use. What is the alternator output on the GS?

I use a Gerbings jacket and gloves. No problems at all. I added a voltmeter to keep an eye on things. The jacket and gloves cycle on and off and the voltage goes from 13.6 to 14 as they do it. That seems fine to me. At idle it will show 12.5v when heating.
The Gerbings web page gives wattages but I don't have them handy.

Overall everything indicates no problems using some heated gear.

I have a Tourmaster Synergy jacket Wired directly [fused] to the battery it draws 76 w Never had a problem.
And its at least 6 years old, I imagine the newer heated jackets draw even less..

I think Scotty will be in shortly to provide the real numbers (which are, of course, kinda important!), but I recall from one of his threads these rules of thumb:

1. You can use any one piece of heated gear (gloves, jacket, vest, pants OR heated grips) and run a plugged-in accessory (GPS, radio) AND use the fog lights if installed.
2. You can use any TWO pieces of heated gear and run a plugged-in accessory, but best to avoid using the fog lights unless at full RPM (and really, not even then-- without the fog lights, you can use above 4,000 rpm).
3. THREE pieces of heated gear starts to make the RS cranky unless you're at full RPM.
4. FOUR pieces of heated gear... hope your AAA card is current :joke:

I'm happy to correct these if I'm mistaken...

I've used Gerbing gloves, jacket and pants at full bang on both the RS and the RT,never a problem.Make sure that you have the proper fuse if you are going direct to battery. Each piece comes with a variety of fuses and charts.
I'm sure that there was a thread on the electrical output of the Spyders....I mean another one, Joy!

Here's another thread on the same issue. In the middle of the thread, the load is figured out for the RS / GS with heated gear.

During our trip, at the coldest, we never ran the heated gear at more than half power.

That's the thread I remembered!

I rode out this morning, it was 51 degrees... pshaw, nothing, right?

After an hour, I had my fleece liner on under my Kilimanjaro jacket AND my winter gloves on, and while I had a pair of mesh overpants over my kevlar jeans I wished I had put the dang liner in *those* before I threw them on this morning.

It's easy to forget just how freakin' cold wind gets.

Glad I've got my Powerlets installed, next Saturday I'm riding over to the BMW dealer to raid their Gerbing collection while it's on sale!

Where do you mount the Powerlet on a RT??? The wife has CB/intercom and the spot between the switches is used for the headset connector...Any other good spots for the powerlet connector??? Don't really want her to have to fool with the coax connector off of the Gerbing's gear.

Just got back from a 4,000 mile trip to Yellowstone. One morning when going from Dubois Wy to Yellowstone the temp was 27, my Gerbing liner kept me warm. It is great to be able to turn a dial and adjust the temp as warm as I wanted to be. The electric liner is the best touring thing I have added to the Spyder. My RT handled the electric load with no problem.

I mounted mine on the glovebox Y-panel on my 2010, but it is a pain, and has to be measured ever so carefully. On the 2011 I mounted them on the inner, front (flat) corner of each front speaker grill. Much easier to get at and more room behind the panel for the outlet and wiring.

My heated gloves, coat and socks are from First Gear. They sell a battery operated remote that I have stuck to the under side of the dash, just above the gas gauge, works great.

Randy
