Heat

Greetings,
I know this has been beat to death, but I need a fix I can get installed.

First, let me say I love my :spyder2:. Just turned 10,000 miles on my 09 GS. Never been in the shop except for scheduled maintenance and the DPS recall. In fact I hope to move up to an RT within the next year.

I never had any problems with excessive heat until two weeks ago. I took a trip up into central Florida. The actual heat was 101 degrees and I was on the Turnpike for at last three hours. I have diabetic nueropathy so I have no feeling in my lower feet/legs. I suffered 2nd degree burns from the heat. We trailered the bike home so I didn't suffer any more burns. I'm ok, but here is my question.

Last night I took it out for a short dinner ride. Although still hot, it was in the evening. I have never ridden such a hot bike before. The black tupperwear by my thigh next to my crotch area (sorry, can't think of a more PC term) was so hot I couldn't touch it. The engine was running at 5 to 6 bars.

I checked when I got home and the fan is blowing. Do I need the shields Spyderpops makes? Could it be the infamous Y joints? I need to get fixed as I am planning a 2000 mile trip in Oct and with that heat, I won't make it past the city limits.

Help

At 10 thousand miles i wouldn't be surprised if you need ''Y'' gaskets.' If you do replace them with the Honda gaskets. [18392-MAM- 000]

both. I had the gaskets replaced and still needed Spyderpops shields. I have installed both and working soooo much better. If you have highway pegs on the GS you might also need the Can/Fam... from ICS. Spyderpops was kind enough to tell me I would still probably need it (got it installed first) since I use my highway pegs so much. Hope this helps.

Jim, I've lived in Flarda all my life and the last two summers have been the hottest I've ever experienced. My RT-S was up to 109 degrees on the temp reading. However, as long as the fan worked (which it did) I never had excessive "bars" to where I went into any kind of limp mode. Bottom line is that we're having a helluva hot summer.

I will say that I got the heat shields from spyder pops and they really helped out with the heat on my right ankle. I do note though that there is some heat that leaks out of the cracks of the plastic. Hope this helps.

Yesterday, after eating breakfast, I got on BR1 around 10:30 or so. I was parked in the sun and as I left my thermo read 113...I rode a mile or two and it came down to 108 and then after five miles, 107 and stayed there until I got home, 55 miles later...IT WAS HOT!!

I don't think my gauge is that accurate, as it seldom matches the bank temp signs, etc. Oh well, it was pretty warm.

:agree:

Stock gaskets won't be good after 10,000 miles --- it's a quick and easy job to replace them----

Been meaning to ask... if I hand my BRP dealer a pair of the Honda gaskets to use, will they use them, or will they insist on using the stock gaskets? Perhaps for warranty purposes? (Which would of course be ridiculous, seeing as they're freakin' *gaskets*, not to mention the obvious, i.e. the Honda gaskets are better than stock).

Anyway, I can certainly replace the gaskets on my own when the time comes, but it'd be nice to have the option to let my dealer do the work.

I don't see why they wouldn't use them--- they match up perfectly with the oem ones. It's a 30 min install-- easy stuff.

Some will some won't, Your results will vary from dealer to dealer.:D
That said if your dealer also sells, Honda's I think you won't have a problem.

:agree: Y gaskets and Spyderpops shields. My gaskets went out at 9,000 miles. I only had about 50% on the right side and it was very hot on the tupperware. I have added the sheilds now it is so much better than when new. :2thumbs:

heat

with all things said I believe for me is a good idea to just change the silly things at 5000 if they are still there at a time that works for me!

Thanks to all for your help. I am going by my dealer today and will make an appt
to get my 10,000 mile service and the Y gaskets. They also sell Honda's, so I can't
see a problem using their gaskets. Also, got my credit card ready waiting for Spyderpops
to open so I can get those coming my way.

Thanks again

Jim

Guys please excuse my ignorance, what gaskets are you talking about? where are they located?, my spyder just turned 21,000 miles and by checking at the records i could not find any gasket replacement, my right leg cooks when is hot but i tought it was the nature of the beast.
Thanks
Lupe

First thing I did when I got the RS was to wrap the pipes from as close to the engine as I could get to just where the wrap is not visible under the bike. I have never had a heat issue even in the height of summer. Cheap, effective and in some circles advocated for increase in performance.
Ride safe.

My dealer replaced mine with the Honda ones I brought them, no issue. Then again they also change my oil using the Mobil 1 High Mileage 10-40 I bring in. It's nice to have a good dealer that will work with you.

When the Y gaskets fail can you feel leakage around those joints? I'm close to 8K miles but don't feel any leaks. When the temps hit 100+ I do get pretty warm on my left thigh.

Only if you feel right up around them --- but at 8,000 miles you're about at the max they will last---I'd get them replaced next time you do a service.....
