• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. Heat from cat

2014 sts and I'm not saying it's crazy hot but the wife says the heat coming from the cat cooks her feet or foot. I'm not sure if I'm going to keep this spyder it lives at the shop more then with us so I'm not going to put a lot of money in this one. So has anyone rapped the cat to help with heat and if so did it help?

I had around 15k miles when I started feeling heat from right side. It got hot enough that I had to move the foot out to feel comfortable.

During the rain days I replaced the Y gaskets. These are where the headers go into the cat converter. There are clamps and the right one was loose. When I got things all apart I found the right gasket was not much more than the metal mesh. The silicone carbon stuff was really worn off. Now that I have new gaskets, I can enjoy the ride. Just dos 250+ miles and no problems.

I wrapped the headers also just for extra muffling.

Old vs new gasket

The right gasket with loose clamp.

That still doesn't quite fix the heat issue. Just replaces the cat converter and makes for a louder ride. Not sure if it would affect the warranty.

A cat eliminator should significantly reduce any heat issue you might be having down there - it has to, simply because catalytic converters are designed to heat up & in fact generate heat in order for them to work properly!! So if you take the catalytic converter out you won't have that heat generator slowing the exhaust right alongside your feet anymore, & that's gotta mean less heat!! ;)

Sure, it'll also probably make your Spyder sound a tad louder too, but if you aren't changing the secondary muffler as well as fitting a Cat Eliminator, there shouldn't be a massive difference in noise (in my case, it was about 3 deciBels). And I don't know about the USA or Canada, but here in Aus catalytic converters aren't mandatory for motorcycles, & since the Spyder is classified as a motorcycle under our Aust Design Rules, it'd take a brave inspector or cop to pick on anyone who still had the standard secondary muffler but had simply replaced the Cat with a Cat Eliminator!

Works for me!! :)

If I where keeping this spyder I would get the cat delete pipe but this poor spyder spends almost as much time in the shop then out of the shop. I was looking for a cheaper alternative then the cat delete pipe!

As mentioned earlier, The catalytic converter is designed to collect & concentrate the heat coming out the engine cylinders via the headers, where it concentrates and raises the exhaust gas temperatures from something like 200 F to sometimes well over 800 F - so think about that a bit, & what the implications of that are to your problem.... While ever that catalytic converter is there, you are going to get a reasonable amount of heat radiated just where you tell us you don't want it!! :sour:

Wrapping the catalytic converter would certainly be cheaper than removing it.... But you will still have heat being pumped in from the engine/headers, & heat going out to the exhaust; in effect, all that wrapping will do for you is to contain (& probably increase) the heat radiating from the 'little area' that is the cat that's actually wrapped & force it to radiate (probably even more) heat from each end of the wrapped bit where the heat 'escapes' the wrapping into the unwrapped pipe!! And it will do that at each end too, so leaving the headers bare & wrapping just the cat will also increase the heat radiated under the Tupperware as well as the heat radiated by the riders' foot.... Not a great 'solution' at all!!

So if you are serious about reducing the heat radiated from underneath the Spyder & not just moving it a few inches away from where it is now, then wrapping won't be particularly effective unless you wrap the entire exhaust from the cylinder head right down to at the very least the beginning of the 'secondary' muffler (ie the main one out the side of the Spyder) and even then it will only be a marginal change in where the heat radiates out but it will very likely be more heat than was radiated there before - it hasta be, cos you won't be letting any heat be lost further up the pipes towards the cylinder!!

OR, you could fit a Cat Eliminator & massively reduce the heat actually generated in your exhaust pipe which would reduce the heat radiated!! Yeah, it'll be a little more expensive, but it won't be as much mucking around - have you considered the cost/time it'll take to strip the Tupperware & properly wrap the exhaust?? AND, more importantly, it WILL reduce the overall heat generated & radiated out underneath the Spyder/by the riders' foot.

Quite simply, if you Remove the large lump of 'heat generator' that the catalytic converter is then the heat generated is massively reduced; but wrap the exhaust anywhere/in any way & all you are doing is moving where the heat escapes most.... And unless you wrap/treat the entire exhaust so that the only place heat in any significant quantity can escape is out the hole/s at the very end....

Maybe be the solution to your problem is.... if you are keeping the Spyder, fit the cat eliminator; but if you are selling it, don't do anything!! ;)

I feel your right with this. Plus what will the extra heat do to the cat and what problems will that bring!!
