HCM Filter (Hydraulic Control Module)

Questions

New member
In the middle of doing my first oil change on my 2012 RTS SE5 & ran into something that I can not find an answer to in this forum archive. My question has to do with the HCM filter. Does this HCM filter really have to be changed with every oil change like it says in the manual? The reason I ask is no one seems to address this in any video or discussion when it comes to oil changes nor do they show it being done in any example. I do not have a problem getting to it and doing it, but I was just curious why no one says it has to be done when changing the oil filter. Any thoughts?

Just as I thought. OK, I have another question about this filter. I just purchased this bike a month ago from the original owner with only 200 miles, so I am doing the first 600 mile change. I have since found out that the 2012 model year had an "Extended" filter on the HCM filter & this was supposed to have been done when the owner had it serviced. Since this is the first oil change I am afraid that this has not been done. How can I determine if I have the "Extended" HCM filter or the original?

Forget that last question. I found BajaRon's info on those HCM filters. I have the old shorter version since this 2012 has never been to service since purchased by original owner. More time for me to get this right.

I think 2012 has the short filter and if the oil has never been changed it will still have the short filter. So first look at the oil tank and if the filter it had or changed to the longer one. There will stiker warning you to use the correct filter. If you have the short filter buy the longer new filter and ask the dealer for the new deeper filter cap. Almost all dealers should have buckets full of them, because they came free with every filter for a couple years.

You should upgrade to the longer HCM filter. This allows you to extend your oil change intervals to 4,600 miles.
Also you may not be able to get the short filters for much longer!

Bummer is, only the dealer is going to be able to get you the longer cap for free.... Otherwise you have to buy it! And I am not sure you can since it's a dealer bulletin thing... I have not checked if you can.

Had to wait for today to complete that first oil change on the 2012 with 600 miles because the bike shops in this area are closed on Sunday & Monday & I started the oil change on Saturday. Went to the dealer first thing this morning & picked up both needed filters. The new extended transmission cap comes with the new filter at no extra cost. Also came with a new O-ring. I gotta tell ya', this has got to be the absolute worst oil change I have ever done on a vehicle. I have owned an auto repair shop in my past & have encountered many a tough oil filter to access but these two on the RT are almost impossible to do yourself. The transmission filter cover bottom screw is made more difficult to access after installing that new extended cap. It was bad enough with the old cap. I had to get it in position with a magnetic pickup tool & actually was able to turn the screw with the magnet to the point where I could tighten it the rest of the way with an "L" shaped allen wrench. Maybe someone else will pipe up & give some ideas on what better & easier way to get these filter cover screws on & off. Anyway, this experience made me wish I had my old Honda back.

If you drill a hole in the upright in line with the head of the lower allen head screw you can then access it with a long ball driver. Ibelieve this is acceptable with BRP also!!!!!!!!

You will be able to get the short transmission filter for a long time as it is used by a large number of vehicles. The reason the 'Extended' transmission filter is so expensive is that the SE5 Spyder is the only vehicle on the planet that uses that filter. If BRP quits making that filter there is no other source.

The 'Extended' is a bit misleading. People were running 5000 miles plus on their Spyders long before BRP upgraded their filters and called them 'Extended'.

As far as I know there have been zero filter related issues with the aftermarket products. I have personally run 6,400 miles (SM5) and I know others who have run farther than that with their SE5 on aftermarket filters. All of the problems occurred with the original BRP filters.

It was the BRP OEM engine and transmission filters which were failing at these longer distances. So the 'Extended' service interval is only in comparison to the original BRP filters. Not with the much better made aftermarket filters.

The current BRP filters are a much better product and I have heard of zero filter related issues. But the same can be said for the aftermarket filters as well, including the shorter transmission filter. Many retained the short cap and continue to run the short filter. They are not only much less expensive, but also much easier to find.

My 2013 has such a hole. I think it came from the factory with it, unless the techs who did the first oil change before I bought the bike made it.

If you take the bottom bolt out on the plastic frame/upright that is in the way and then it will move and you can use a long extension and hex socket to start the screw on the HCM filter cover.

The reason for the extended or longer filter on the se5 is because the short filter had problems when shifting. That said, when mine was changed it shifted a lot smoother. I don't know anything about these other excuses that I'm reading about.

Only the BRP filters had issues. None of the aftermarket filters were ever a problem. Many never converted to the longer BRP filter because it isn't necessary.

Even with greatly extended service intervals the OEM sized aftermarket filters work very well. BRP made new filters because their original filters were so bad. Not because you needed a longer filter.

Ron I just sent you an email. The filters I got from you are the longer ones correct?
