• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

I agree, a great question. I've rode 21,000km on an XT250 dual sport motorcycle and checked the valves every 6000km, and never needed an adjustment. However, the Spyder Rotax engine seems much much much much more complicated and has much more power then the 250, so it is good to hear it will take quite a few miles before an actual adjustment may be required on the Spyders.

The shop manual indicates valve clearance specifications of .22 to .29mm for the exhaust valves. Does this mean your shims were very large, or am I missing something? I am not a motorcycle technician.

Usually Valve seat and valve face wear make clearance go tighter after a while.

I guess the specs for the intake valves are in the shop manual also...?


When checking my XT250 valves, I would just use a thickness gauge to be sure they are within specified range. If so, no adjustment required. Would it be the same procedure with the Spyder then?

I found the hardest part about checking my XT250's valves was getting panels off and getting to the exhaust/intake ports to do the check.

Is it difficult to get at the valves on the Spyder?

New Shim Size=Measured Clearance - Desired Clearance + Existing Shim Size :thumbup:
 
I used to be an engine rebuilder- probably done 1000 in my 23 year mechanics career. Some of them even had shim under bucket systems so I am well familiar with the system.
Are you saying you had to use shims that ranged from 2.225mm to 4.625mm to get proper valve clearance?
That's a big variation. Were the factory shims that far apart in thickness?
