• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

I am sorry if this question has been asked before but, what kind of oil can be used in the Spyder? We have a 2012 Spyder RT-S. I have been keeping n eye on the oil but, if I have to add oil, which kind should I use?

Opinions are like belly buttons, everybody has one. I would use an oil that meets factory specs.

Let's see....

If you know what's in it keep using that. If you don't change your oil and keep some on hand the V-twin does consume oil. Check it after long rydes or every 3 to 500 miles. I use the brp xps synthetic blend but your manual will tell you how to check it and what spec's other oils should meet..

Yes it has been asked many times. What have you been using? That will be fine as will any oil that meets the specs described in your owners manual. If you didn't get one when when you bought it go to the BRP Can Am website. You will find one there you can download. It will also tell you how to check the oil and how to remove the panel to get to the dipstick

Everybody has their favorite brand, but as long as it matches BRP specs brand should not matter and you will be fine. Many Use BRP oil, others use Mobile1, Amzoil, Valvoline, Shell Rotella, etc.,etc,etc.
Use what you like. And use the search button for more oil info then you'll ever need or want.

Thanks guys. I had the oil changed by a dealer but, I will be doing it the rest of the time. The dealer is a good distance away and, the price of what he charges to do an oil change.... I was just wondering what oil brand was good. I have a Yamaha FJR 1300 for 3 years now and I do the oil changes and other thing on it. I asked guys on line the same type of question about that motorcycle. I use Rotella oil on it. I do have the manual on both of these bikes and I have read them. I just wondered if you guys had a preference.

Dealers do get a good chunk of change for a service - but look at what a typical service entails. It is much more than just an oil change. If you are going to do your own service, be sure to look in your Operator's Guide for everything that should be done, and what the recommended service intervals are.

My personal belief is, that a company which is offering me an unlimited mileage warranty has a vested interest in selling me an oil that will protect my engine and transmission - so I use the BRP XPS oil.

I also use BRP synthetic blend between fill ups. I use the dealer for actual oil changes, and not b/c I can't do it; but, I have an excellent dealer, and I want him to stay in business, and provide him with service/maintenance work anytime I can. Also, don't worry about whether a question has been asked before. If you want to ask, just ask.

While there are a number of oils out there that will work fine in you 998 Rotax. Rotella isn't one of them. Don't use anything with friction modifiers (SM Rating). They will slip your clutch. Be sure to get a JASO MA-2 rated oil.

Read the very important notice on page 129 of your operator's guide about NOT using API service code SM or ILSAC GF-4. Use of oils with these service codes can result in clutch slippage on your Spyder.

I can understand trying or helping keep a good dealer in business but, being that I am retired at 50 years old and that may sound great for some, I have one daughter that just finished college and another about to start. My one I even moved to California from central PA. Right now I am trying to keep our expenses down and, changing oil in the Spyder is one way I can help.

I will stay with the Rotella on the Yamaha but, I was going to use Royal Purple on the Spyder. What do you guys think about that?

As long as it is not API rated SM then you should be good to go with the 10w-40 version.

I know it does. I work at a NAPA store and we have checked it out. I just wanted to get your opinion before I pull the trigger on the Royal Purple oil. Thanks.

An opinion is akin to an anecdote, the plurals of which are not science. The specs on the jug of oil are what matter. YMMV.
