Oil Pressure Warning light stays off before cranking, normal or not?

I've noticed on my new-to-me 2015 F3-S, that when I initially turn on the key, the gauges sweep and all warning lights illuminate for a second or so.

Before cranking the engine, I'd expect the oil pressure light to be on until oil pressure comes up.
However, my O/P light stays off even before cranking. It also doesn't come on when I kill the engine with the kill switch.

Can someone with a 2015 F3 verify if this is correct? I plan to install a gauge, but I don't want to be running around without any oil pressure monitoring until then. :(

If you can post a video of your startup, that'd be even better.

Thanks,
David

The engine oil pressure switch* state is detected by the ECM and sent to the console via CANBUS. Older consoles illuminate indicators or not depending on ... whatever. Maybe next week the indicator may show and maybe not. Another factor is the engine is dry sump and retains a modicum of oil pressure for some time after shutting off. So turning ignition back on might be showing residual pressure. A service manual should be in your near future. Most online sellers accept orders on Sundays.

* There is also a 3-wire oil pressure transducer (and oil temperature sensor) on the HCM monitored by the TCM to provide smooth clutch engagements.

Thanks Bert.
I'll be checking my OP switch tomorrow and jumping the wires to test the light function.

My left hand controls my clutch engagement. :ohyea:

Well, I tested the oil pressure light function.
With the key on, I get the initial bulb check, but no oil pressure light with the connector open or shorted.
Started the engine, and still no oil pressure light with the connector open or shorted. Seems like something is wrong in that circuit, I have no oil pressure light warning under any condition.

I have 11v across the sensor. 1 pin is grounded, and with the key on engine off, I get 2.1ma current through the switch.
Looks like the wires to the ECU are good, but it's not recognizing the signal.
I guess it's time to order BUDS.

My service manual shows both switch wires are isolated from ground* and are not shared with any other circuit. Also the switch diagram implies the switch is normally-closed, which enables a circuit check as part of the POST process. One way to verify this is to disconnect the switch and observe any indications after Key-On including fault codes (P0520, P0523, P0524). The console light should be continuously lit.

*the service manual tests to ground so what do I know?:D

I didn't get any codes with the switch disconnected.

I have a manual so I'll check the diagram.
Usually, simple switch sensors like this have a pull-up to 5v or 12v, and are pulled to ground when the switch is closed.
I'll be looking at it again later this afternoon.
I'm making new shift and brake linkages to move my pegs back a notch.

Thanks

I've searched that manual, and I cannot find a 2-wire oil pressure switch.
I do see a 3-wire oil pressure sensor connected to the TCM, but I don't think my SM6 has a TCM.
There's also a 2-wire oil TEMP sensor feeding the TCM as well.

I double checked Canampartshouse.com, and their parts diagram shows the oil pressure switch on the back of the oil tank, near the filter. p/n 420256917.
This is where I made my measurements.

I'd think this circuit would set a trouble code and MIL if not working at startup.
Is there a procedure for retrieving codes through the cluster?

In my service manual the EOP is located at F-6 between the GBPS and AAPTS.

The fault codes can easily be retrieved via the console (there are two types: transient while the engine is running; and permanent while it isn't) but I don't know how.

Your SM6 does not have a TCM or HCM. The EOP is in the manifold below the oil filter. It appears to be a two-wire switch for my 2014. If yours has three wires then it's a transducer.

Now here's the funny part: the switch is EOP in the schematic and OPS in the text.

Cobranut - I know this thread is a couple months old, but I have some answers to your original request. We have two early-model F3-S’s. On both my wife’s SE6 and my SM6, at key-on, all warning lights illuminate, then go off. No oil pressure light illuminated with key on but engine stopped. Hope that helps.

I see from a post in another thread that you added a gauge. Mechanical or electric? Where did you tap in? Any pics of install? Thx.

Thanks BCNewell.

I searched a few ads with video, and that's the behavior I've seen in a few other F3's of similar vintage.
It just seems odd that the warning light would not be on before starting, when there's obviously zero oil pressure. Every other vehicle I have seen with idiot lights has had the OP light on pre-starting. :dontknow:

The gauge I added is electronic, using a 3-wire transducer.
I bought a 10mm to 1/8" NPT adapter to put the sensor in the oil pressure service port at the front right of the engine.
I'll add the parts I used to my other post, in case you want to do the same.

How about some pictures!
