Harley Davidson fined for emissions from after market devices

Gee guys don't Cry To Loud for the poor guys at Harley - do the math - 340,000 units at $1200 - my buddy just spent $1200 for his installed.

A 12 million dollar fine is like us buying a hamburger at Mc Donald's. Those corporate China loving slobs at Harley are laughing their ass off at that silly little fine. Typical corporate / government smooth over - the fine should have been 500 million.

What lesson could anyone learn from this - its like you robbing a 7/11 for $20,000 and get caught and only have to give them $100 back!

What a Joke - no doubt there were many Harley owners on the fine committee!

Have your fun bashing the Motor Company. Any one whom has changed or removed any part of their intake and or exhaust has violated EPA regulations and is subject to fine, imprisonment or both. That goes for private citizen as well as businesses.

However, comparing HD to Mitsubishi or Volkwagon that knowing certified and cheated is incorrect. HD motorcycles passed all emissions well into the late 20-teens. They sold a device which clearly stated for off-road use only. Those of us whom had the stuff installed without intent of non-highway use are guilty as well.

P.s. I have several Democrat acquaintences that ride HD. So it can happen.

Please Pleas Please Don't even begin to tell me that Harley didn't know those thousands of bikes were on the road that is pure BS. First off how many Harley's do you know that are used for "Off Road" use????

Harley Davidson is nothing but Corporate Crooks who took the good name of Harley and sold their ass to China. Honda is more American than Harley.

Do you think for a split second they care about emissions or our country? Not a chance, they are worse than VW. Unlike VW they got away with it with just a slap on the hand and a fine that is not a fraction of what they made!

:popcorn::popcorn::popcorn:

I don't really care about the demographic who rides Harleys. It's not me, but I know those who do. I care more about the fact that the EPA is going after a company for selling a tuner. I've never tuned a vehicle before, but I have a hard time with the idea that you hold the company liable for something labelled for off-road use only. Like the tuners even make a meaningful difference in emissions...it's not like you're removing a catalytic converter or anything. :banghead:

And what do Spyder Lovers do with the cat delete pipe? Ride off road?

Apparently you didn't get the memo that all Honda MC production was relocated in Japan and Asia, and therefore hardly American..

Your implication that HD cheated on emissions certification is not accurate and therefore not the same as those who willing violated their certifications.

I personally do not think bashing is good.
Keep your eye on the facts.

They have been known to shut down lemonade stands---as well as big corporations.

If it is ok to hassle our way of life as long as its some brand you dont like---

What about when they (regulate) everything but themselves.

I love R&R put another dime in the jukebox baby!

I would strongly suspect the EPA was just following the CARB's lead in the matter. CARB did it first.

CARB has virtually shut down what was a vibrant industry that provided thousands of decent paying jobs in this state. Commiefornia was the center of the aftermarket motoring universe, but no so much anymore.

And, as to VW et al. There are credible news report (out of Europe, not the US surprise surprise) that government officials in the EU and US knew about the emissions cheating, because politicians have mandated such unreasonable standards, those that "know" turned a blind eye to the cheating. It was only when the story hit the press that the bureaucrats who knew about it and winked came forward and acted surprised to cover their backsides to make their political masters happy.

Having owned Harleys like forever until 2014, I believe HD was wrong to pay the blackmail money to the US Government.

1. It specifically states that the TUNER is for racing purposes and NOT STREET use.
2. If it is a CRIME to sell this product, then they should go after Vance Hines, Rhinehart, and a whole bunch of others.
3. The people they should be going after are those that have it installed contrary to it stated use, but that was too difficult for the FEDs so they targeted HD and HD gave in.
4. The use of a Race Tuner and having the bike Dyno'd does not NECESSARILY change the the EPA requirements to out of spec.
5. Many states do not require emission standards on bikes.
6. Since the Race Tuner does not become part of the bike the FEDS have no proof as to which bikes were tuned and which were not. Even in states that require emissions and if the bikes failed that does not prove the tuner was used, and owning the device does not mean it was ever used.

Fact - it is not a crime to sell the devices - the crime is using them for purposes for which they were not intended. So shame on HD for giving into the FED.
HD now =s WUSSIES!

I just ran across this. Interesting article! :yikes::yikes::yikes:

Please keep in mind that Corporations involved in the retail business, are in it to make money for their investors.
The term "Corporate Crooks" is actually pretty offensive. nojoke

Fact - If you're not a lawyer, you aren't qualified to make the above statement. :lecturef_smilie:

Seems to me like the EPA is rapidly sliding down that slippery slope. I don't like Harleys, and I generally don't like the idea of tuning an engine because of the impact on reliability. But I think people should have the freedom to do what they like with their property unless it's harming someone else. I have a tough time wrapping my head around the idea that tuning a motorcycle is going to have a meaningful deleterious effect on anyone.

What's next...is NHTSA going to go after aftermarket suspension companies? Not sure if there's legal precedent for that to happen or not...

Well the main goal is divide & conquer

That seems to be working

One volcano can cause years and years more pollution than we create with our vehicles for many years. We also had a severe blackout I can't remember when it was 17 hundreds or early eighteen-hundreds from a volcano. Here in Indiana we have several state parks that were carved out by glaciers way before men were driving around vehicles. But God help us if somebody wants to put a tuner on their bike.
Then of course there's NASCAR drag racing 747 jets flying through the sky factories etcetera etcetera what a bunch of bullcrap to pick on cottage industries.
By the way I do not mean I'm against all of those things I just mean they all exist

fact is most do not even know what the tuner does or even how an engine works it is an air pump more air in more air out best performance all the tuner does is let you adjust they fuel to optimum level to reach that goal on another note idleup im sorry your mommy would let you have a hog or that you cant even shift your new se6 properly

Dude I've had more Harley's in my time than you have teeth in your mouth!

Bottom line who cares how it works - Harley new it made the machines dirty and continued to sell them for "OFF-ROAD" use are you kidding me??? LOL

Anyhow, do the math then subtract the fine - they are laughing at the little worthless fine!

Just because your buddy got ripped off doesn't mean everyone does. The Super Tuner itself sells at an MSRP of $250, and dealer cost paid to Harley is going to be less than that.

Harley Davidson doesn't see a dime of the labor fees that the dealers charge, and they probably don't see many of the other add-on dollars that your buddy bought with his super tuner. Dealers are independent businesses that maintain a contractual relationship with the manufacturer to sell their products. The manufacturer doesn't get paid every dollar you spend at the dealer.
