Just guessing, but as a former race track tech inspector of many years, I would interpret the "additional fuel cells, cans or the like" to refer to anything that was physically separate from the main motorcycle fuel tank. I think this would be quite clear cut, in cases where the auxiliary tank did not directly feed the original fuel system, without rider intervention except by opening a valve. This would prohibit pumped transfer systems, even if permanently connected. Of course this is just my educated opinion, and counts for nothing. Only the officials of the sanctioning body involved, can rule on what is allowed. It is their interpretation of their contest rules, that counts. The Guts and Glory Rally Across America is open to any brand, make or custom built motorcycle. Side cars, trikes and three-wheeled motorcycles are permitted under the same terms and conditions herein.
As this is a timed event, there will be no restriction on fuel tanks, or other modifications to your motorcycle. However, you MAY NOT carry additional fuel cells, cans or the like. Your motorcycle must pass state inspection requirements in the state of registration. Your motorcycle must be street legal, have working lights, turn signals, speedometer, odometer and appropriate street legal tires. Further, each participant must have a legal DOT approved helmet, and the Company strongly recommends it’s use throughout the entire course of the Rally.
The Company reserves the right to refuse participation in the Rally to anyone whose motorcycle is deemed to be unsafe during the inspection at registration."
Well this may have answered my question. But as I highlighted above it does state "custom built" and "no restrictions on fuel tanks". Now IMHO I would consider my Spyder once completed will be a custom built bike. With the "no restrictions on fuel tanks" statement I guess you could modify your stock tank to hold more fuel. As our Spyder tank is located under the seat we can't really modify it to hold more fuel (actually you could but it would be very complicated to design and therefore exceedingly expensive) so I'm having a second tank built into the Spyder. I wonder how this rule would apply to those with sidecars and aux fuel tanks built into their sidecars? I had aux tanks in both of my Hacks. I realize this may be the wrong forum for this discussion but what the heck.
