• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

GPS Raincoat

I thought I saw a number of posts about GPS waterproofing methods, the sandwich bag among others, so here is my take on the task. It is worth mentioning that we have had rain in one form or another daily for about the last three weeks, and Pyder has not been idle. I must also add that the genesis of this idea was from the Ziploc bag suggestion. It looks like this;DSCF1345.jpgthe GPS is mounted and ready to go. Now with the addition of the raincoat;DSCF1347.jpganother view showing the Velcro tabs for securing;DSCF1349.jpgand now for a view with Velcro securing details;DSCF1352.jpgThe bag is a leftover fiber optic packing bag but I'm sure any suitably sized clear bag will work. This is the third one and they work like a charm. GPS is dry even when I'm not.

GPS Raincoat,

I was just thinking about the raincoat idea.

I think I would use a Canadian Condom for a GPS raincoat, very effective.

Why a Canadian condom, as we all know the Canadian Condom is much larger than all the others, and very sensitive to the touch, LOL.

That guy Dom is very sick. He must spend his winters in Key West.

Captain,

I'm not sure if I should read too much into that (Key West). Hmmmmm. I'd better leave this one alone.

In any case, I'll stick with my Arkon zip lock. Less expensive than an aqua box; but, more than a ziplock. But, that's a pretty neat job that you did and good pics.

I see that You have been to Key West

You are a very wise man.

Why not get a waterproof GPS? If you use your GPS like I do you would not risk having it go bad from rain.

I did the math on that thought. I can get a decent 4.3" or 5" screen GPS for $100-$125. The Zumos are in the $600 range no?

Even if I destroy a $100 GPS I'm ahead of the game, even if I go through one a year. Using the zip lock and rubber band method I put about 15k miles on my Garmin 1300... I got tired of the stopping and bagging, and the fog in the bag, so I upgraded my GPS mount to a RAM Mount Aqua Box...Now I don't need a bag, don't need to stop, or take the time to fuss with it. It locks - keeping honest people honest... and my Garmin 1300 now has over 20k miles of Spyder use on it.

I can afford a Zumo... I just haven't found it absolutely needed. Do I want one perhaps someday? Sure... The higher brightness screen and the live weather maps on some of the Zumos I though would be very helpful. We'll see what happens when my 1300 dies, but I'd probably still get another car type GPS for the aqua box.

I like the GPS I have

My NUVI has been a dependable little unit, and is still supported by Garmin. Waterproof GPS are rather dear compared to my ameteurish but effective efforts, so far about 40K miles by this method. When the time comes, it will be replaced by something similar.
