• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. GPS mounting on an RS

For navigation I've normally just rely on written notes during the daytime or a GPS app on an old phone at night. However at the last endurance event on the first day my notes got soaked and the old phone fell off and broke, then on the second day I left the notes for that day behind (obviously my subconscious decided things where not difficult enough:-)). Fortunately I managed to remember the route and checkpoints, probably thanks to the amount of time I spent writing the notes in the first place.

Anyway back onto subject, I've now given in and got myself a Garmin Zumo 590 GPS but just trying to work out where best to mount it and hoping for some suggestions.

These are the factors:
  • I already have my radar detector mounted directly above the clocks so that's not suitable location.
  • I want to be able to still see the clocks.
  • I'm in the process of fitting a hand brake so it can't be mounted off the bars beside the throttle.
  • I'd rather not have it sticking high off the bars.
  • The 590 already comes with ram mountings.
  • The 590 can be setup in portrait mode rather than landscape and that's probably my preference.

Here's how I do it....

I have a couple options....

Al - Have you mounted yours to the bars themselves on the left or to the side of the clocks?

Chupaca - Didn't think of putting it on the mirror but it would move it out of the way and yet not too far out of my eye line. What's the vibration like there? Just wonder as I've had to retighten the bolt that holds the mirror in place a couple of times. Also like where you've put that other mount, forgotten about that tab on the bars and it would make a good mounting point. Lot's of options on how to position it from there so it doesn't affect the clocks.

May do what you've done and put mounting points in both locations and see what works best.

PS Just curious, what are those two switches on the right-hand beside the throttle?

The simplest solution is right in the center.

You can spend $229 to get the OEM 590 mount and mount the garmin's powered dock onto it.

You can spend $174 at Providence Spyder Accessories for the Basic 12v Charger (in either stander 12v or dual USB), which I have on my spyder.

GPS mounting

Al - Have you mounted yours to the bars themselves on the left or to the side of the clocks?
Used a ram mount that wraps around the "spokes" on the handlebar. Like Gene's mirror mount; my mirrors don't buzz of vibrate, should be a good stable mounting point.

Chupaca - Didn't think of putting it on the mirror but it would move it out of the way and yet not too far out of my eye line. What's the vibration like there? Just wonder as I've had to retighten the bolt that holds the mirror in place a couple of times. Both the mirror and inboard mount by the ignition work very well. The two switches are for the fog and driving lights .

Thanks for those links TechnoTherapist. Unfortunately I have a 2011 RS and all of those options only work for the 2013 RS's onwards. The RT's, ST's always had mounting bolts from the top of the bars which those mounts use but the RS's only changed over to those on the 2013 models. The previous RS don't have them so would not be compatible (If you look at the center part of the bars on Chupaca's pictures you'll see what I mean). However I may be able to make my own mount up that would place the GPS there as it would also be a good place. That's another idea to play around so thanks.

Al - That makes sense as well, I hadn't thought of using those sort of mounts though I had seen them at the stockists.

Chupaca - I thought they may have been lights as heated grips or seat didn't make sense where you live:-) Over here our main beams are where you have your headlights and our low beams are where you've got your fans for the air intakes. I've rewired mine so both sets are on when I'm on high beam.

Thanks for all the help guys, I'll have play now and see what works best.

Gotcha. I found this guy (They also have them cheaper, this one just has the best pix to show mounting):

Simple, effective, low cost Garmin GPS mount

I found these on EBay sometime back and they work great for mounting my Garmin Nuvi. It's easily removable when not required and holds the GPS solidly at high speeds (I have a touring windscreen).

Really like your turbine intakes in the fog light recesses, can you tell me where you got them ??

Helibars

I have the Helibars on the RSS. It moves the handlebars closer and was able to add ram mount and 12v to the center. I don't know how to turn pictures. :(

Got them online and they come in many colors. I think ebay, amazon or google. I also got the flex tubes to run them to the air cleaner and rear cylinder...wish I could add pictures here of the internal set up. I took out the airbox and have the round filter system from JT's a sponsor here...

I took a good look the fog light recesses on my 2011 RSS and the opening doesn't appear to be round... I didn't think there was any difference between models for that piece of Tupperware. In looking at the photo of yours it appears to be more round.... Is there a difference or did yours just kind of deform to fit the aluminum housing of the turbine insert ?? Seems yours is a two piece design and mine is a single assembly... Sorry for all the questions but it doesn't appear it would fit as well in looking it on my Spyder.... Did you have to modify to fog light housing in any way (i.e: cut or remove material) ?

I had to order from cheapcycleparts.com the base for the fog lights and the shrouds that go with them. I just did not order the lights. Base was 40 each and the shrouds 20 each back then....

That makes sense... I figured there had to be something going on in the background there... Thanks for the additional insight.

Finally got around to doing this as part of this years end of summer mod's. In the end I decided to go with one of Chupaca's mounting positions but modified the bar mount that came with the 590 so the RAM mount and GPS would sit closer to the bars. This meant I could use pretty much the bits that came with the 590 and just had to make up a couple of small spacers to push the ram mount out enough so it didn't foul with the bars. Also mounted the GPS in the vertical position as I preferred that. When I'm sitting on the GPS is easy to see with just a glance and it's not blocking the speedo or tacho.

Thanks again for all your suggestions guys as they really helped, originally I never planned to mount it to the bars as I thought it would be too cumbersome but seeing what others had done changed my mind.

PS Yes one of my other mods I'm working on is a handbrake:-)
