During the initial space flights, NASA discovered that ball point pens didn't work in zero gravity, So to beat the problem, NASA spent years and 2 million dollars to design a pen for use in space. It would have to work in zero gravity, And sub zero temps, And also underwater, on glass and any surface known to man.......

The Russians just used pencils........

you will not believe what government spends our money on. You can't imagine how much they pay for common items just to spend their budgets. But some thing have simple solutions if you approach them from the right angle...
