Got my wife on the RT for the first time!

It was a beautiful day here in East TN and I was itching to get away from the computer for awhile. Much to my surprise my wife suggested a run to town on the RT to pick up some corn for a hen turkey that's been hanging out at the house. The Co-Op where I get my corn is just down the road from the BBQ place so we turned it into a lunch run too.

This was Chris's first ride on the RT and she really has no desire to ride on any of my bikes, it's just not her thing. She is big on safety and even on the RS she never felt that safe not having a backrest or anything to lean against. I knew the RT was about as safe as you could get and that she should feel pretty good about that. As you know the passenger seat on the RT is great and really hugs you, very little if any chance you're going to fall off of that.

I had the trailer hooked up so I could haul the shelled corn and whatever else we might want to haul home. We stopped at the BBQ place first and had lunch there. She was really enjoying herself and that was great. We went by the auto parts store and then the Co-Op and headed back home. It was just too nice of a day to go right home so I asked if she wanted to take the long way home. She said sure and I headed to the gas station to fuel up first. It's funny how she talked about all the smells you smell when riding, she was starting to get the whole riding experience.

We wound up doing about 60 miles or so but it was a quality 60 miles. She enjoyed herself so much that we are making plans to take some longer local trips. She's not ready for the highway yet but around here you can go a long way and never hit a highway. I think our next trip will be to Cades Cove to see the black bears. I was in that area two weeks ago and the bears were out in force.

So maybe after all these years I found the ride that my wife feels safe on and we can spend more time in the saddle together. I sure hope so. :doorag:

That's so cool Lamont!!!! Wow, that's a big step in the right direction. We hope that's the first 2up ride, with many, many more to come. Great fun!

:clap:That's great to hear about a future :spyder2:lover. Hope you have many more 2 ups!:ohyea:

Lamont,

I can relate to this like you would not believe. It's been my expierience as well. I could count on one hand the number of times my wife has riden with me over the 25+ years. BUT since the RT.... I can't tell you the number of times she has suggested we go for a RYDE !!! :2excited:

When I was shopping for a new bike, getting the wife to go with me was a big factor. I don't think I could have made a better choice than the RT.

:2thumbs:

Lamont,
Your story is sooo much like mine. I haven't been able to get my wife on the back of a bike for over 25 years. Last week, finally got her to take a 15 mile trip and now she's hooked. Now 2 or 3 times a week, she's found some reason to take a ride. Either to dinner or out to her sisters about 35 miles away. Talking about all the day trips we can make to see the sights in the area. She is even talking about a weekend run to someplace 400 miles away. I'm looking forward to great summer with my wife. This RT has saved my ridding career and brought new joy to my marriage. Not so bad being 65+ any more.

Glad to hear that Chris enjoyed the ride. When my wife rode with me on 2 wheels, I usually came home with bruised shoulders from where Susan was gripping for life. Like Chris, she enjoys the ride now because she says she feels so much safer on the RT. Whatever the reason, I enjoy having her ride with me and it's much more fun and less painful for both of us now!

That 60 mile ride???

Hey Lamont,
I too made that wonderful mistake of inviting my wife to take a ride with me. Um... that was about 20 years ago. That wonderful but solemn mistake has cost me a freakin' fortune.

At the time, were two up on a BMW K1100LT, that led to buying her a K75 RT, then two new R1100 RT's. We then took about a 12 year sebatical from motorcycle cruisin' to sailing the Caribbean. Thank God I only had to buy one boat for that!!!

Now the "Coup de Grace". About 6 months ago, we decided to go cycle touring again... Yep... You guessed it.... Two...not One but Two RT's sitting in our driveway.. "Ouch!"

Be careful what you ask for!! Len

Note: We'll be seeing you one of these days, you may remember that my home town is Greeneville...."Where the sun shines on the roof and the moon shines in the basement!!!":ohyea:

If you are not using any sort of comm, you may want to try using it. I find that it helps my wife when I can tell her what I am about to do. She cannot see directly in front of the bike...all she sees is my helmet when she looks straight ahead. I let her know when curves are coming up, stops, yield signs, etc. This is during highway driving...in town, she knows to be ready for anything at any time. Talking helps keep her mind engaged and not focused on the hazards associated with not driving in a cage.

Just thought I would toss that out there.

That's great news, Lamont. You need to let hubby Jerry and I know whenever the two of you would like to do a ride - the four of us. We're right up the road from you.

COMM...use

Hey Chris,
I've just finished installing BRP CB & Zumo 660 GPS's on my RT. Since I'm doing the install's myself, she insisted that I do mine first. I can't for the life of me figure out why...:dontknow:. It was a challenging undertaking but mine is finished and all components working gr8. I can now say that I've been up close and personal with my Spidie... Len

:congrats: I remember you saying when you first got the RT, that this was your hope. Isn't it great when dreams do come true!

Lamont, tell your wife that she has taken a big step forward and we All applaud her  Hopefully she reads this thread and gives her riding impressions. If they are positive, I will show my wife :D
