Going on a cruise!

Guesswho

My sis in law and I are headed to the Bahamas in March. It'll be our first cruise! Has anyone done the cruise leaving from Orlando, going to Freeport then Nassau Bahamas? We know what we want to do in Nassau-swimming with dolphins and Atlantis, but not much to do in Freeport. She thinks we should just venture out on our own...Has anyone just roamed around Freeport on their own and have any good recommendations on places we need to see and go?! Also those that cruise a lot, what are the best things to do on board? This is only a 4 day cruise so I want to pack in as much as possible. Thanks for the help! Sorry this wasn't a post about a 2014 RT...seems like that is the only thing being talked about these days.

Didn't know you could get on a cruise ship in Orlando, that's near the middle of the state. What cruise port are you leaving from. Also which cruise line?

I guess we are flying into orlando, but leaving from Port Canaveral on Carnival cruise line. My sis in law is doing all the logistics of the trip, I'm just there as the bank :( haha

Get yourself a tour book for the area and check out the various options. The books usually give you the good information and sometimes what to avoid. The only bad thing I can think of with cruises is that you are usually on some kind of a time schedule for the ports of call. Miss the time, and you miss the boat. You should have a great time. The tropics are very nice.

Depends..!

we rented scooter and did our own thing. Got to see what we wanted when we wanted and as long as we wanted. Flyers for places to see and things to do are all you need...enjoy..!!:yes:

Went on a cruise to Bahamas a few years ago. I never sign up for the tours the cruise ship offer, they cost more. I got of the boat and hired a bus driver/taxi and he took me all over the place. I got to do way more things than the others.
Wasn,t available in Bahamas or at least I did not see any but on other cruise i have gone on I rent a bike, scooter, ATV or even a convertible type vehicle to go around.

have fun

First, a cruise is what I call a true vacation. By that I mean everything is done for you. Your food is taken care for you, your room is prepared, there are several onboard activities that you can avail yourself of. You don't have to do a damn thing but just sit back and enjoy. For some a cruise will drive a person stir crazy. However, if you think about it, a cruise provides you an opportunity to really kick back and relax. You don't find yourself exhausted at the end of it all.

The ideas of scooters or a "private rental" are excellent. Beware that you drive/ride on the opposite side of the road. Cindy & I rented a scooter and rode the outter perimeter of the island. It was a majestic ride. You will have a bit of a time constraint though. Additionally, just keep in mind that you are in a foreign country. Be aware of your surroundings.

One of our spyderlover members, Ivorspyder, is a touring agent and has a plethora of information that he can provide to assist you. He's also a great guy.

Hope this helps.

Chris

:agree: Check in with Ivor... :2thumbs:
The ONLY concern that we ever had when out on Island excursions; making sure to be back at the ship well before scheduled departure times...
 The will NOT wait for you...

:agree: The ship will not wait long for you if you are late and I have been on a few cruises where they have left people behind. My wife and I also don't go with the cruise line excursions, we look for the excursions offered on the pier. Much cheaper and we have never had any problem getting back in time to get the ship.

Sounds kinda boring........................and I'm a bit disappointed you didn't sign up for my Flanker's Adventure Cruises "Pirates of the Somalian Coast" tour. 5 anxiety producing days and 4 nerve wracking nights cruising off the Somalian coast combating the scourge of piracy. We train you how to use a boarding pike, fire hose, pepper spray, and provide a complimentary AK47 and 120 rds of ammo with each cruise! And anything you take off of subdued pirates......................you get to keep!

PS: Have good time in the Bahamas!

Never been on a cruise in that area, but here is my points.

First thing to look for is a newsletter, that should be in your room, but will also be around the service and excursion desk. This newsletter will list all the activities for the next day, locations, and the times.

Spend the first two to three hours getting to know the ship, and you will find it easier to get around.

Unless it is something special that you cannot do elsewhere I would find it on your own. Believe me, you will have no problem finding the same excursion not run by the ship. Most are private vendors that give a cut to the cruise company anyway. For example, on my last cruise my daughter wanted to do the swim with the dolphins, the cruise excursion wanted $159.00 (if memory serves me right), but found another in the city that charged way less, and gave more.

Have fun

I did a Black Beard's Cruise back in 2000-2001. I "dove into the next Century" under the boat.
can't compare to a cruise liner ship as our 'ship' was a 65 foot live aboard sail boat for scuba divers. (The Roman's had no concept of zero)
