WOW!!! :agree: that there's a learning curve to the :spyder: no doubt.

But if I had read this b4 I looked into buying Teddy's :spyder: I would have gone in from the beginning with a negative impression from reading this article. Guess that explains why I haven't renewed my CR subscription :lecturef_smilie:

Now that I've got almost 12K miles, it's more fun every day I Ryde :thumbup:

I can understand why they came away with the 1st impressions that they did, but that's all they are, 1st impressions, without the knowledge that experience gives you in "How to Ryde a Spyder."

I know this article is from 09', but I wish they would do a follow-up review with testers that have logged many miles in the saddle of a Spyder & see just how different their two reviews would be :clap:

Consumer Reports is not known for its expertise in motorcycles. It seems apparant that the people who test drove the Spyder were not motorcyclists. I would take that review with a grain of salt. There are revues of the Spyder in Rider Magazine and Cycle World. I believe that these are better venues for that type of report. At least those reviews were conducted by people who are into motorcycles/motorcycling.

The CR report is misleading. Many activities in life require long term familiarity, such as firearms shooting, bowling, archery, golf...
Too many folk look at CR as the gospel of testing, but they are way off the mark on this one.

To give a fair and balanced report, they ought to drive one for several months to appreciate it. 15 minutes in the saddle is not enough.

As a handicapped rider (missing a leg) I strongly disagree with their comments on that aspect. I can get on and ride the Spyder; it's easier than getting in/out of my car.

Everybody up above has hit the nail on the stop. I've been a Consumer Reports subscriber since my Dad gave me hooked into it back in the 80's and over the years I have learned that they are not the best testers. I can relate with them with appliances (large) and cars, but as far as computers and other appliances go, I totally disagree with them. And I searched CR when I started looking into buying a :spyder2:. I found this article and after I read it, I just could not agree with them simply because they where comparing a 2 wheel machine to a 3 wheel one. I wrote them saying that their review is bias because the comparison was similar of testing a pickup truck and thinking it drives like a sports car with the top down. Totally different animals!

Hopefully, anyone researching a Spyder purchase would also see all the responses below and they are very positive. Looks like a bunch of Spyderlovers members replied with comments!

I agree, they missed the mark completely. The key here is trying to compare the Spyder to ANY 2-wheeled MC. It's a totally different animal and will always come up short when it comes to certain performance characteristics. But with a little practice we do OK! It's a very enjoyable ride.

I have to admit, though, the shortcomings of this platform are enough that I have been weighing my options lately. I kind of foresee a time when one of the Spyders is going to make way for something that can deliver the kind of performance I am looking for.

Isn't it amazing how someone with a very broad mind and a very short testing period be able to write and post an article on a web site and think that they would actually make a difference on someone's decision! I'm sure that the decision to buy a Spyder (for me anyways), took a lot longer than reading one report. As I'm sure, a lot more people are doing what I did. Hopefully they are at least on the sideline to this gold mine of a website and learning from EXPERTS such as we have on here. It was a blessing for me to have found this site. The worst part of the whole thing is their comment on the Spyder being no good for people with handicaps. The opposite is true. People my age are the ones that really ask about it. I tell them to go to this site and learn the truth, good or bad.

Consumer Reports seems to have a definite agenda on some products. It's like they didn't really care how the Spyder performed, they didn't like it before they tried it, and they were going to stuff it no matter what.

I understand 'Different Strokes for Different Folks', the Spyder isn't for everyone. And, there are some defininte negatives about the Spyder that we shouldn't be upset about if a review points them out.

But come on people! Get real! This review is not just poor, it's 180 degrees off! The only people I know that get paid to be this wrong, are weather forecasters!

I used to get CR all the time, and I found it usefull on many things. But I began to notice that some of their reviews (on products that I actually owned) were WAY off base.

I wonder how many people this stupid review has run off? What a shame. They aren't doing themselves or their readers any favors with this kind of propaganda.

:dontknow::hun: I have to absolutely disagree with all of them:lecturef_smilie:. Sounds to me that they ride a desk and are not and have never been involved in any other form of powersports.

I don't have a Spyder (RT-S on order), but these gentlemen are novice riders, they say so in the write ups. I have ridden bikes for 62 years...interrupted by Korean and Viet Nam. I had to ride my triked Wing 500 miles before I "accepted it". It is a different ride than the Spyder "trike".

I will not like my new Spyder until I ride it 500 miles in the hill country. After that, I will bring it in my living room, park it next to my Lazy Boy and it will become family...next to my Wing.

I am glad that I didn't base my purchase on this article last year. I am living with Cerebral Palsy and Spina Bifida and have thoroughly enjoyed the Spyder and believe it has been safe to operate and a heck of a lot of fun.
