Getting the gas fume smell on wifes SE5

Wifes spyder is just recently getting a very strong gas fume smell. Hers has not had the update done yet, waiting for the dealer to get the 2nd update before taking it in. I did read on some post about possible fixes for the gas fume smell issue, with routing a line to either the front somewhere or the back of the bike, but what I am wondering is, will the 2nd update fix that issue?
If not, then is the best solution the full on canesecteronomly ? (I know I spelled that wrong, too lazy to go look it up again,lol)

The 1st update should help with the fumes--- which I think is one of the main reasons they did it---- the second one is supposed to fix performance issues that the 1st one may cause.

I yanked the can--- and it won't be going back in.

Sounds like I may end up doing that then...yanking the can and running the hose somewhere.

First, you need to make sure that it's the canister.

Check the gas cap first. Just a sniff around it will often be enough to tell if that's where the problem is. Make sure it's on correctly and not askew. Then check the gasket.

If the problem isn't there then take the tupperware off of the right side of the spyder and take a sniff over by the canister. If that's where the smell is coming from then the canister is saturated with liquid gas. The smell is not going to go away even after the update. Most likely you have a bad purge valve.

If you desire to keep the canister then you need to go to the dealer and have them replace the valve and canister.

Otherwise just remove the canister, plug the line to the purge valve with a bolt and extend the vent line from the tank either to the right and front by the radiator or back by the back wheel......canisterectomy

:agree: Easy to end up in this fix. All it takes is overfilling the Spyder one time, pushing gas into the canister. Even filling too quickly can do the same thing. Once you get the gas smell, it won't go away on its own for a long, long time.

After my canisterectomy it doesn't matter how much gas is in the tank--- after a ride----liquid gas comes out of the tank vent line.

Yeah, I get just a drop or two as well.
Probably vapors from the tank that condense in the vent line. Still even with that there is no smell in the garage that I notice, whereas with the canister in place the whole garage smelled like gasoline such that I thought the whole place might explode if I lit a match.:yikes:nojoke

Yep...that's the amount of smell we are getting, fortunetly we don't light fire type items in our garage..well, I have 2 kids, so I should say, that I know of lol

You sure about that......in a lot of homes the water heater is in the garage......:yikes:

Yup--- I park my Spyder inside at work---- and we used to smell the gas fumes---- but not at all since removing that stupid can!

You sure about that......in a lot of homes the water heater is in the garage......:yikes:

All vehicles are prone to possible gas leaks of some kind. That is why BOCA building code prohibits furnaces or water heaters in garages unless they are mounted off the floor (4 feet?). Gas fumes are heavier than air, and tend to settle. Nobody should have an open flame source near the floor in a garage. Same goes for open electrical motors and other spark sources.

SOs SE also has gas smell

My SOs also has the gas smell but I suspect it is due to me overfilling the tank last week. I have already had the update and rerouted the evap hose out the back... secured it in front of the tire on the swing arm with slack for movement.

I've read several post about the smell after topping up to much. Not only did I top up the SE... I also topped up my SM but as of this time it does not smell of gas. For some reason I can't seem to refrain from topping up. I guess, even with a gas station on every corner now, I'm afraid I'll run out.

I've been considering removing the SE5s evap and drying it out to see if that corrects the problem.

It is possible to dry out the canister if you can keep it warm and well ventilated......probably a difficult proposition now that winter is coming on.

Second choice it place the whole canister under vacuume.....like in a bell jar......that also would clear it of gas.
