Gas Gauge

Don't mean to be a pest but looked for answer and couldn't find. Recently purchased 2012 RT limited. Went on first long ride (riding about 60-65 MPH) and noticed the gas gauge showed empty and gas light was on at about 120 miles. Stopped for gas and tank was full at 4.4 gallons. Manual says tank capacity is over 6 gallons. whats the deal, you guys see the same? If so how many miles can you go before tank is really empty.
Just thought of another question. Manual says when filling gas tank to stop when automatic shutoff shuts off on gas pump. I noticed you can get another 1/2 to 3/4 gallon in tank after shutoff. Will this hurt anything on bike?

The gauge is very pessimistic on the 2012 and 120 to 130 miles is it. Do not overfill the tank as this could lead to problems with the charcoal canister. Keep your RPMs up around 5000 for best results.

Let's see..!!

for the RT's 120 is about par. The tank is rated 6 gallons but you can not put that amount in. Air space etc. Your light comes on when you have about 1.5 gallons left which is like reserve. The dial guage is not as accurate as the digital on screen guage if you are using it. You can disconnect the gas and temp guages and the digital ones will appear on screen. Many replace them with other gauges if this is the case...I fill slowly till it bubbles at the overflow but don't overfill other issues pop up if you do...

Gauge is woefully inaccurate which is why some folks disconnect that analog gauge and revert to the digital ones that will show up when the analog fuel and water temp gauges are disconnected.

Tank holds 6.6 US gallons but only about six (or slightly less) of that is useable. Obey the instructions not to overfill or you will be smelling fumes forever. We go by the odometer reading and fill up when mileage gets to 135-140. Any more than that is risky.

But... The gauges on the 1330 bikes seems to be MUCH more accurate...
With my 2010, I could travel about 135 miles, and put in four gallons or so. With the 2014, I can travel over 200 miles, and feel comfortable running that gauge down to almost "E", since it reads so much closer to what's actually still in the tank... :ohyea:

:agree: x 2. The new 2014 RT's have a more accurate gas gauge and I consistently get 200 + miles before the fill light goes on.
I have not changed out the gauges on the 2014.

I always fill the same each time, so that helps to keep the mpg in the same ballpark. I fill to about 1/2 inch below the filler ring.

As I put more mileage on my 2014 I have been inching up on the miles before refill. Last weekend I filled at 201 miles and put in only 5.5 gal of the alleged 6.9 capacity. The analog gauge still had some room before the big E. Based on my average MPG, that does include some "spirited" lower MPG sessions, I think 225 on a tank should be good with satisfactory reserve. I am very interested to see how fuel consumption is to/from Spyderfest as that will be some long hours at consistent speed(s).

Thanks for reply guys. As a test would it hurt anything if I ran bike until it quit to see how far I can go after warning light comes on?

When the computer begins to tell the throttle body that there is no more juice to be had, I think some very bad things will happen. The electronics on these machines control everything and once the system begins to sense something is wrong you can be in for big trouble.... trouble that sometimes takes a dealer (one who is knowledgeable) to solve.

I don't imagine that it would hurt the bikes at all...

...but it might take some extra cranking on the starter to get the fuel back up into the throttle bodies; make sure that your battery is up to the task...
If you've been stopping at 120 miles, and taking 4.4 gallons; try stretching it out to 140... ;)

...then 150! :D

Like others, I don't recommend running it dry. My best was 184 miles and I put in 5.8 gallons. (32 mpg) close to my usual. 2010 RT-S.

I filled before I ran out of gas. I had run out of courage also. The gas gauge needle was below empty by about 1/8 of an inch.

I have gone 155 miles and it took 5.95 gallons.
I do not recommend doing this. The reason I did was because I was inbetween gas stations.

Big difference running ethanol or E-free. Im looking for good spare can for mine now was avg 30mpg E-free but last trip had few stops no choice ethanol went down like 20-18mpg. Sux
