• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

front tires

CAR TIRES

has anyone put radial car tires on the front of their spyder I would like to know if you or not

I'm guessing but at least 1000, so follow "r1100riders" advice. I think the best price you will find is at discount tires direct.com-----they ship for free......Tire Rack doesn't...........Mike....

Ron,
What tires would your Son be suggesting for up front?
The General Altimax HP 185/60/14 or if you want something a little narrower the Altimax RT 175/65/14. I prefer the HP. it is a directional tire, about the same diameter, but 3/4" wider, needs a simple fender adjustment and way cool looking with a 440AA rating and load/speed rating of 82H. This one is in stock and anything else a day away.

Just so you understand, the OEM tires are radials. If you want to change for some reason, do so, but if the driving force is just to switch to radial tires, there is no need. :)

I've got over 40k so far with bridgestones i bought from tirerack.
both put on and balanced at tire kingdom for a 12 pack to the installer

Rain driving

Driving home in hard rain yesterday noticed when hitting deeper areas, front tended to wobble almost like a shimmy, anyone think narrower tires might help that? Don't like driving in rain, rare in cent tx, but only trans leaves no choice:dontknow:

Don't know what tire you are running or how good of shape it is in, but its important to have a tire that has a good rating against hydroplaning and a good wet traction rating. Any tire will hydroplane in certain conditions. It is up to the driver to recognize these conditions and use good judgment and slow up.

Narrower tires would be dangerous, IMO. Less cornering traction, and you could end up with the VSS not working properly when you need it. What you felt was probably the rear losing traction, anywaay. Tha is when the nanny (VSS) kicks in as it is supposed to. BTW, tire diameter is crucial to the Spyder. Get the front to back ratio off by much and your Spyder will go into limp mode. Slow down in the hard rain, and go easy on the throttle. The owner's manual warns about riding in the rain and hydroplaning for a reason.

Hate to say it; but these guys hit it right on the head... Slowing down is your best weapon against hydroplaning.
Unless you've got a very effective "anti-rain dance" that you can perform quickly! :roflblack:

Hydroplaning

The NASA rule of thumb for hydroplaning is that "9 times the square root of the tire pressure is where it is the worse."
Google "hydroplaning tire" and after a few of the usual commercials, you'll see several great articles on hydroplaning and prevention, warnings, etc. Great info. One of our 4 daughters had a fender bender 9 days after getting her license, many years ago. She told the cop she had hydroplaned. He told her "darlin, you don't hydroplane on dry roads and you don't skid 34 feet either." It's a great buzz-word and many blame hydroplaning for every incident they have ever had.
Happy riding.

HYDROPLANING

When I came home from S.I.T.A. and getting near the new Champlain Bridge to go into Vermont, the ski's opened up ( I later learned the rainfall was estimated to be 6 inches per hour ). I was fishtailing so much I could barely keep it in the lane and I was down to 35 mph.....I would have pulled off the road but there was no place to do so.....all ditch......I was pullin my trailer and I wish I had a video of this....At least it would show how bad it can get and not be a disaster......You just have to go with it and not panic.....PS I am using relatively new car tires with very good tread. But any tire will Hydroplane, even F-1 $5000 rain tires...Mike.

KUMHO

YES....
i put KUMHO's @ all 3 corners....
FRT: SOLUS http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?tireMake=Kumho&tireModel=eco+Solus+HM+KR22
which are nolonger available, but KUMHO has other styles that will fit... i use the 175/65 R14
RR:AST 225/50 R15
http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires...idewall=Blackwall&partnum=25HR5EAST&tab=Sizes

these tires have improved my handling, ride, and gas mileage all at the cost of just over $200 for all three mounted and balanced... i run 30 psi up front, and 35 out back... far FAR superior to the OEM Kenda's....

tires

i recently put Falken ziex 512 185/65-14 on the front with no fender modifications or adjustments
and have a Kumho 225/50-15 in the garage to instal this week
i love the handling of the falkens so far tread pattern is great they do tend to pick up more rocks than stock tires
