• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

Front Plate

Did a search for this answer on the forum and could not find it....probably is here but I had no luck. Question is...I see all these photos of Spyders, but seldom see a front plate. I live in Texas and found this...

This is from the TX DPS website. Sounds like it is still a violation to me.

§ 502.404. OPERATION OF VEHICLE WITHOUT LICENSE PLATE OR
REGISTRATION INSIGNIA. (a) A person commits an offense if the
person operates on a public highway during a registration period a
passenger car or commercial motor vehicle that does not display two
license plates, at the front and rear of the vehicle, that have
been:
(1) assigned by the department for the period; or
(2) validated by a registration insignia issued by the
department that establishes that the vehicle is registered for the
period.
(b) A person commits an offense if the person operates on a
public highway during a registration period a passenger car or
commercial motor vehicle, other than a vehicle assigned license
plates for the registration period, that does not properly display
the registration insignia issued by the department that establishes
that the license plates have been validated for the period.
(c) A person commits an offense if the person operates on a
public highway during a registration period a road tractor,
motorcycle, trailer, or semitrailer that does not display a license
plate, attached to the rear of the vehicle, that has been:
(1) assigned by the department for the period; or
(2) validated by a registration insignia issued by the
department that establishes that the vehicle is registered for the
period.
(d) Subsections (a) and (b) do not apply to a dealer
operating a vehicle as provided by law.
(e) An offense under this section is a misdemeanor
punishable by a fine not to exceed $200.

I have lived in several states. All that I am familiar with only have one plate on the rear of motorcycles.

Some states only have one plate for cars also. Indiana for one.

If in doubt, call the Motor Vehicle Registration office in your state for the answer.

I could see an A-frame mount for a plate in front--but do not recall seeing any on :ani29:'s on the site.

According to this section, it is legal; no front plate required.

You are aware the Spyder is a motorcycle, aren't you?

How does a Spyder fit into that description????

What part of section C are we missing here. The same applies to every state in the union, there are no front plates for motorcycles or a trailer for that matter. Get a grip people if this is your biggest problem today, you need to get a life, have another drink or something stronger.

As a recently retired Texas Master Peace officer.....the Spyder is registered as a motorcycle......1 small size license plate affixed to the rear...registration sticker on the upper right of the rear mounted license plate.....thats all that is required.....no more inspection stickers.....just the license renewal sticker....that is it.

The Spyder is NOT a car.
The Spyder is NOT a Commercial Vehicle.

End of story :)

Back when....

I lived and worked in Texas motorcycles all had one plate rear usually with a drop down tab for the safety inspection sticker...as long as your registered as a motorcycle your good with one. Now as to the new "AUTOCYCLES" I do not know...:roflblack:

The OP has six posts on the forums. He has come here with a question. That's what forums are for.
Least we could is make him feel welcome....rather than attempt to make him appear stupid.
It takes all types. I'm not the sharpest knife in the box, but I get by.

The question begs to be asked... does the OP have a motorcycle endorsement on his license? And for our English friend:
"If you want to play in Texas, you better have a fiddle in the band".

OJ UK, I agree with you as far as cutting folks slack. Most bike forums have the pack mentality and folks like to pile on anyone
they see as less cool or sophisticated. As Capt. Woodrow Call said, "I hate rude behavior in a man. I won't tolerate it. "

Its a fair question that stems from "Is a Spyder a vehicle?"

IF so, then why does the "(Spyder as a) vehicle" not require a front tag?

2 wheels = bicycle or motorcycle in a lot of peoples view. 4 wheels or more is a car, truck or some such. 3-wheels? Somewhere in between. Hence the recent issues with Polaris Slingshots in TX and CT. In Oklahoma, by state law definition, motorized with less than 4 wheels is a motorcycle. Also, in OK, we are only required to have a tag on the rear of any motorized transport on public roadways. Trailers either have a real tag, or a SSN depending on what is being towed.

I wasn't referring to the OP, it was a couple of others that in spite of "c" were still questioning.

Because it was stated "COMMERCIAL VEHICLE!"

AJ

Please read my post again and look for context. I was paraphrasing and indicating where I could understand where the question arose in the OP's mind.

What I was trying to do, without being bluntly direct, was to let folks know that some of their responses came across as harsh, rude, and tactless to someone just posting a question.

Since I work for a branch of the USDOT... well, never mind. The point in my post was missed, I guess, because I was not being bluntly direct.

It's all good....

Yes...I do have the endorsement. Been riding two wheeled bikes for about 35 years. Just sold my Goldwing. This is my first Spyder and was just wondering about the plate on this type vehicle. I just bought it from a dealership so I don't have the registration info yet and have not seen classification. I knew two wheelers were not required to have a plate. None of the six that I have owned had to be front plated.

In regard to some of the comments here...the large majority of those on forums like this are very welcoming and they really want to help. On every forum that I've experienced there is a "fringe" of posters who fall into a different category.

Usually they are elderly and grumpy. They are that way because the clock is ticking down and they know it. I don't blame them and will probably be the same way when I am their age.
