• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

Ford diesel truck opinions, please!

We are interested in purchasing a used diesel truck. I am not to thrilled with the Ford brand, but am willing to attempt to pry open my mind and look at this one:

Are there any folks out there with experience with this engine/tranny setup? The price seems really fair, so that's why I m asking for opinions. The price seems a bit TOO fair.

I do not have a clue about (newer) diesel ownership and would appreciate any and all comments about this trucks running gear and cost of maintaining a 7.3L engine.

All I can say is, that is one CLEAN looking truck. Doesn't seem to have been used in heavy construction, etc. You may have a winner. I would ask them to let you take it to a Ford dealer and have them go over it. It would definitely be worth the cost. If it's mechanically sound, the asking price looks good also.

Like Dudley said, take it to a Ford dealer.

Most places where I live in NYS give at least a 30 day warranty; most give more.

Personally i like Chevy duramax diesels with allison transmissions but in any event make sure you have the engine gone over thoroughly by a dealer.

We have a diesel right now with some internal issues(i can't remember the problems) and can go at anytime, but it runs great up to 65 mph. So, again get it checked out completely.
 
Had a 1999 3/4 ton ford with 7.3 turbo diesel, gave it to my son. It is the best diesel ford has built. 16 quart oil change, should change every 3,000 miles like clock work. I had a bad crash with it, hit a bridge almost head on at 65 mph trying to avoid a car stalled & across both lanes. Put it back together. It is still going strong today. Only other problem was the oil pan's like to rust out on them here in NY. Needed to keep an eye on it & spray it every two years. Other than that it was the best truck I ever owned. Power to tow is unreal.

I would take it to someone I know and have them check it out before you buy it. If seller doesn't agree with that I would probably back out.
 
Problems with their own.

I believe Ford was makiing their own Diesel engine for a few years and that engine was not good. nojoke I'm not sure when those years began and ended but it has definitely ended. Seems as if it were around the mid 2000's. Google it to find out the probs they were having with their own Diesel engine. My buddy just bought a new one and loves it. I'll ask him what years the bad ones were. Will let you know tomorrow.
 
Ford started making their own diesel in the 2011 model year, prior to this International made all diesel motors for the Ford F250,F350.
 
I've seen a lot of Diesels come through my office here for insurance... The folks with Fords seem to be smiling more and complaining less than Dodge or Chevy owners. :thumbup:
 
I did a bit of searching and found the 7.3 Powerstroke is one of the best diesel powerplants out there. I have always thought Cummins held the top spot, but apparantly there are more Ford 7.3's out there still running around than both Dodge and GM combined.(supposedly)

Ford changed to a 6.0L with more HP and TQ and it was a disaster. I think they went back to the 7.3 configuration again in '07.

So..seems like this unit may be worth looking at. We are thinking about possibly purchasing an enclosed trailer for the Spyder, our camper and any other items we would like to keep and have the option of being able to pack up and move to ?? when the mood hits us. Also we can use the trailer as a garage for both Spyder and camper. But I don't think our Jeep Liberty is up to the task of towing a 7X14ish trailer for 2K miles, hence the possible purchase of this truck. Besides, it would get about the same mileage as our Liberty gets, tho fuel would be more costly being diesel.
 
Had a '95 Ford XLT SC LB 4x4, with the 7.3L - babied the truck, including changing 100% of the fluids every 24K - transmission went at 92K, and the tag to fix was $7,800. Swapped for a '05 (in '05) 3500 Ram Laramie 4x4, with the Cummins.

Same treatment, and the Ram gives an honest 22 on the highway, and 16 pulling my trailer - never had a single problem with it.

Seems the Ford didn't run the trans fluid though the cooler when it's in reverse.

Personally, unless I knew the vehicle, and the service history, I would never touch something with that kind of milage. There are too many hidden things that can kill your wallet. Even dumb stuff like air conditioning, or a power window… JMHO

Talked to my buddy at work today who bought the 2011 model year. Loves it so far. Getting 21 hwy and 18. something city.
What he was saying though was he believed between 05 and 2010 Ford was using the International diesel engine. They had problems with them plus a big drawback for them was to repair some of the problems with the International engine, they had to remove the cab of the truck to get to it. Some costly mistakes on Ford's part. Best of luck with your decision.
