Flying Gators and Hot Foot

Jeriatric

Thinks out loud
Wednesday afternoon a 'Cager' hit a chunck of rubber tossing it my way. No possibility of missing it....shy of a far bigger disaster. Tore the right side rain deflector clean off and unbuttoned all but one of the pins on the panel above it. Held it in place with my foot until I could get to the side of the road. No other damage....thank goodness.

Long story short. Hot foot is back.....until I get back.

The trip has been great. Longest day...650 miles....most days have been just over 500.

Bummer..!!

those road gator and the real ones are a hassel there. Lived there three times and know how it is. They should have better regulations on recaps for trucking. I know it's the cost but they can be lethal...glad your having a great trip, all the best and be safe..!!:ohyea::ohyea:

This may sound odd...
But I'm glad to hear that's all that happened to you!
It could have been a whole lot worse!!

And this episode also points out how effective your heat management solutions were!

Jerry, I hope the rest of your trip is uneventful. The gators are everywhere in Vegas now that the temps are rising. We don't have the usual road kill to dodge just flying garbage and rubber.

A couple of years ago my GWRRA chapter held a "No Zone" training session. Rubber flying off semis is one reason why there are three places you don't want to be while on the road; behind a semi, alongside a semi, and in front of a semi. :lecturef_smilie: A guy in the group, a truck driver, said a lady and her mother were in a small car, something like a Fiesta, tailgating a semi. A chunk of rubber flew off a tire, slammed through the windshield, and killed them both. On the Interstate when I come up behind a semi I pull into the next lane and pace the truck from about a hundred feet back until my lane is clear ahead of the truck. I then gun it and get around him as fast as possible. It's those times I will often exceed 90 mph for a few seconds!

Gators are to be feared, and avoided if at all possible.

Sure glad you didn't suffer any more damage than what you did, Jerbear.

Jerry,

I'm glad you didn't get any more damage. It happens so fast even if your 200' behind a vehicle you don't have time to do anything. The Toyota grill that I split in two with the GL1800 on the way back from Key West really was an eye opener. You just don't have time to do much when the randomness of the universe shows up.

:agree: and glad there was no more damage than that and that you're ok

Most large trucks and over the road semi's use retreads. They are only rated at 65MPH and out here the speed limit is 75 and most large trucks travel at 80-85. If it's rubber your looking for try I-10 between Tucson and Phoenix or I-19 coming up from Mexico with bonified ??? Mexican retreads.

Had a friend killed on a Harley on I-25 going through Denver from a large piece of rubber wrapping up around the front tire. Also another lost his leg from a flying "gater" in Georgia on our way from Minnesota to Daytona.

My best advice is stay away from large trucks, pass quickly, do not follow too close and be vigilante of any road garbage. IT COULD COST YOU A LIFE.

I have to completely agree about trying to not be any where near semi's because of road gators flying off, especially when on a bike, but even in a car/truck. I always take the approach of staying well back until I can pass quickly. Unfortunately on some Interstates (I guess all) the line of trucks can go for miles.
My own first hand experience is that we were close to a large truck in a car when one decided to part company. We were lucky that the piece hit the front fender rather than the windshield.
People used to like to tuck in close behind a semi to get sucked along for better gas mileage and used to have friend that liked to do that on a bike. Once back in the late 70's I happened to be behind a semi in a Pontiac and not too close, when it ran over a large piece of plywood lying on the highway. The plywood got sucked up and went airborn and it hit the front end right under the bumper. It tore off the air dam and wedged between the oil pan and the motor in a space I could hardly imagine. If that had been my bike at the time, I probably wouldn't be here today. Never get too close to a semi.

Home....bitter sweet

Pretty sure I could stay out there for months on end...and one day will....Until then, I'll settle for trips like this.

 Lots of good advice posted by you all, and thanks for the well wishes:thumbup:

Somtimes 'stuff' happens....and luck is either on our side....or, it is not. Unfortunately nojoke

I'd rather be lucky than good :doorag:

But; you're REALLY lucky, when your better-half thinks that you're good! :D :2thumbs:

Hey Jerry, glad to hear not too much damage and your OK. I just saw this post!

Never heard of that being called a flying gator so I guess you learn something new every day :)

Oh also... I got the fan LED indicator working really well. I have a couple mounts on order. Talk to you about it later as I know your interested in one.

Not sure which is worse. Flying gators or rolling rocks.....:yikes:

Good news on the fan light  you're the man :doorag:
