first bad belt issue

SethO

New member
here are some pics, got about 25k for miles on this belt, don't know what happened but it went fast, I had it adjusted and I think it was too tight. Big that thanks to Doc for coming thru in the clutch.

I thought I had a clutch plate go and started pulling panels off and then I noticed some mild belt tooths missing (spelled wrong for effect)

Got a new one coming from cowtown and a new rear bearing for the sproket just in case.

Thats about what my belt looked like with a few more toothes missing. When we got home, Spydee got a 24k done. Told the mech about the stripped belt and he said bad rear bearings. Just like DocDuru said.

Turns out the bearings are in great shape. (He was in the process of replacing bad rear bearings of two different Spyders at 12k.)

Maybe my belt failed from pulling a trailer over one too many mountains? :dontknow:

yes I ordered the bearings because I am going to the salt flats in 2 weeks and want to have it, if my belt would have been walking around on the sprocket then I would be worried about them being bad, I have had to get them on the fly and it sucked, the double roller are very unique.

I got that snow tire thanks a ton BTW. I should have got some brake pads from cowtown and forgot, something to order tomorrow

Wow, lots of teeth missing. almost like the belt is running on the sproket teeth instead of down in between them. I had a rock punch a hole in a belt on HD Dyna at 18k right in the center, was on a trip and shop did not have one, since hole was in center kept on riding. Never did have to replace the belt, watched the hole, always looked the same, still looked the same 40k later.

Ya think if you kept the speed down to less than 100MPH it would help???:roflblack::roflblack:

Capt Jim's Tensioner

I have installed the belt tensioner from Capt Jim on my RT and does it work well. I would imagine that with the long belt on our Spyders the belt needs the lower part of the belt tensioned so that it lines up better on the rear sprocket teeth. It has smoothened my RT right out and I think it will help get more miles out of my belt.

I also installed a Capt Jims belt tensioner on my RTL and I'm very pleased with the results as it removed almost 95 % of the vib I was getting. Well worth the money.

If the belt was too loose, wouldn't that be a more probable cause of the failure rather than rear bearings?

not much more, and they should DO much more.

WORD, Seth! I finally jumped back on the phantom the other day to take her out for a "keep it alive" spin and couldn't believe what a pig it was! No offense to anyone, It's just that I got used to the new FA and was shocked at the difference in performance. It really made me realize just how choked off these engines are. And the V990 is a VERY capable mill. You shouldn't have to spend 5 grand on a turbo or whatever to get reasonable power from this engine. But I doubt BRP will ever bring it up to its native potential. Oh well.

Sorry to hear about your belt issue. Sounds like things are under control though. Good on ya, man! Have fun at the flats!

Ahhh... So thats how you can tell if the bearings are bad. Its good you got an extra double roller in case the old one blows. Don't want anything slowing you down.

Glad the traveling tire finally has a home.

Good luck at the Salt Flats!

Said something that was out of line. I sincerely apologize to all who were offended.

Honey, if I were you I would either edit or delete you first paragraph. We are all very aware of how happy you are with your new two-wheelie. We were happy for you until you proceeded to pi$$ on your shoes.

To come here and diss another person's ryde is shallow. It shows what you're really made of. Nothing. There are enough haters in this world already. Keep your :cus: attitude to yourself.

New here but I am not sure if he was really slamming spyders intentionally or it just came out that way.
I have 3 bikes, HD ultra classic, good touring bike, 60K+ miles, lots of brute power. next is a 08 hayabusa, back and forth to work bike, solo touring bike, have sone several 1000 mile days, gets 63-65 mpg on trips, it will launch your eyeball toward the back of your head. just got an 08 sm5 spyder, it is nothing like the other 2, not worse not better, just different. it is a lot of fun to ride, in many ways smoother than any other bike i have had. So far 100 mile trips, will be going longer with new seat, handle bars, highway pegs and heat management parts. I love the reverse, large front trunk, rear bags will be added, I just wish it were able to get 40+ mpg.

I know bud, if I could get on a faster bike for a daily driver that was not 100k I would. If someone had a extra set of high compression pistons sitting I would take them in a second. evozone will not return my calls.

yazz, its ok, raptor and I have talked about this in detail and we are on the same page, I don't think he hates his spyder anymore than I do. I do appreciate the back up. I tell everyone I meet that it is not fast enough but is the best trike on the market. Just needs another 20 hp at a minimum. The salt flats this year should be a real seth misadventure.

I have a zx-12 in the garage that I have hit 195mph on true speed, the busa guys are few and far between that ride theirs that much, there is a guy up in MN that uses it like a daily driver.

Testing exhausts again today.

Wow, lady, what an incredibly stupid thing to say. You should be pretty embarrassed. Why don't you try reading the post. I wasn't dissing ANYONE'S ride. The comment was aimed at the fact that the enigines in these machines are capable of so much more than BRP allows them to be. What about that didn't you understand? And then to tell me I'm made of nothing? I refuse to even dignify that with an answer. Why? Because I am made of better stuff than that.

Seth, you know what I meant by what I said. I know you did. I would never insult you or anyone else like the way I was openly attacked. Lamont, I will not stoop to this woman's level and take this any further. besides, this is not my thread, it's Seth's, so it's done and over. Sorry about the interruption, Seth. That is all.

Hey SethO,

I hope you have a great time on your trip just be careful. I have been sitting here just reading all the things the people are saying and it just amazes me how someone like Raptor can reply to you and wish you well because I read who keeps in touch with each other but I just can't believe that Yazz said what she did to Raptor. She should be ashamed of herself that was not necessary at all. How dare her :lecturef_smilie: . Don't let someone like that put a damper on your ride just go have fun. I love my spyder. So what if someone has a spyder and a motorcycle too. In fact if she got that upset over it she shouldn't have said anything about it at all, it's called none of your business. You just have a good and safe trip SethO. Keep on truckin on your spyder.
