First Annual

Sorry I did not check temps but I would guess 90 for me. Difference is me being near the beach humidity was 70%

Flame out

Went to San Jacinto Friday, and had the same temp.

You both beat me. Just got back from breakfast in Idyllwild, followed by a run off the mountain into Hemet(thought I was gong to San Juan Cap. today but, my back seater flamed out in Hemet. She was :bbq: by 11 am. Under the hood was only 98. :roflblack: So I got her cooled down and brought her back over the mountain, and home. Gonna have to pick my summer time back seater's more carefully :roflblack:

Highest under the hood on this side of the mountain was 113, but, it was only 108 just after 2pm here in LQ.

I have been wanting to do the idle wild roads!
If your looking for someone to do the full 74 and islewild roads let me know. I can ride to La Quinta early in the am and we can ride! I will go home via 74 all the way.

Want twisties and cool temps?

Take a look at this and see what you think. Meet in San Bernardino.....take 18 to Big Bear......pick up 38 and take it back down to I10. Then one of us would go West(to cool weather) and the other just peals off and heads East(to the furnace):roflblack:.

There are others here who would likely join us on this one.

I could go straight home

Desert riding tip, or heads up

Yesterday we had a UV index of 11 - But it was only 108 in the shade("only" when compared to 115 or 120 and above).

Ridding in Levis. While it may be OK generally speaking. Something new happened yesterday.
Heat rash to the upper and inner thighs. Had nothing to do with Spyder heat. Was solely a consequence of radiant heat through my blue jeans(knew it was happening because it felt like a magnifying glass was concentrated on that area). Only took about two hours of exposure, but it has taken 18 hours for the redness to subside. Can tell you for certain that continued exposure(longer than the couple of hours) would have been a major problem.

Not sure if textile riding pants would have offered any better protection. Am relatively certain chaps would have.

Anyway, just a heads up if you have any intention of riding in, or through, our desert areas in the summertime.

Plan well.

After reading all the talk about the inherent risks and danger of riding in "extreme heat", I am going to change my answer in post # 32 of this thread to the opposite answer. I may choose to ride to a specific destination, like Las Vegas sometime soon, (to Gamble and see a show) and will remember all the advice on clothing, hydration, but will stick to the twists in my neck of the woods with cooler temps. Say what you want, I can take it:opps::D

You All ride Safe!

You'll hear nothing derogatory from me. Far from it.

The risks of riding in the desert southwest is misunderstood by most. Thus the reason for my post. It proved to me, what has worked well in the past may be less than sufficient another time. Not sure if yesterdays high UV made a difference, but suspect that played a major role.

Be safe on your trip to Vegas.

I think my spyder bit me in my ass after Steve and I's ride and more riding yesterday.
Last night I got a sever constant pain in my hip. I could not sleep at all. I could not find a comfortable position sitting or laying. It was so bad by this morning I drove myself to ER. I have only ever been in ER once before in my life. Pain is something I usually wait through especially since I knew this was some kind of pulled muscle! But this pain was absolutely Debilitating!

Diagnosis is Piriformas Syndrome. A Sciatic nerve issue. WTH?
I certainly hope spyder riding did not cause this. I think for sure I need to get the tall boy seat.

Needless to say now on drugs hoping it will go away soon. I am suppose to be on a airplane Thursday. I can tell you since I cannot sit more than about 10 minutes even while on pain killers, I wont be going if this is not better by then.

Again I hope spyder riding did not do this and if it did, what exercises should I do to not make it happen again?

We're both the same height so I'll take a stab at your problem. No pun intended.

If you did much in the twisties you were putting pressure on your hips. I'm surprised you didn't mention having noticed a little cramping/discomfort in the hip area during the ride. But, if you weren’t hitting the twisties hard. That could be why. You do need to sit back more. My seat is two inches taller than stock and sets me back another two inches. The wide seating position of the spyder combined with poor saddle position is likely the culprit. That said, at times I can feel it in my hips, even tho I've made the above changes in ergonomics.

Hope you're feeling better very soon. Ouch :gaah:

I had what felt like a hip pointer when riding in the

beginning, I did stretches , drank lots of fluids and

ate bananas for potassium. My pain felt like a charlie

horse, is that what you experienced? I have now

built up stamina and riding muscles for just about

everything except extreme heat gets me tired more

quickly. I also have had various highway boards and

foot peg extentions to change my position. I loved

my seal boards as I got so use to riding the turns by

pushing down with my legs and feet to lock me in the

seat. (hope that makes sense)I noticed

when I would ride just with the stock foot pegs that I

placed allot more stress keeping me in the seat with

my knees doing more hugging of the bike in twisties.

I would say I was hitting the twisties pretty hard for the first time. But I think hard is relative for me right now.
Also I might add that I started feeling a little discomfort in my hip last Wednesday but nothing bad. It was there all week slightly.
Once our twice before I did get a cramp in the side of my hip but more forward of where this pain is now. Once while riding it home from Indio, and another time riding home from work. This was all before Wednesday last week. The pain I have now is not the same as where I did get a cramp. I was able to get rid of the cramp by simply standing up on the pegs for a second or two.
What seemed to really set if off Sunday was I was on my feet a lot flying my RC Helicopters most the day Sunday. Late in the afternoon I could not stand the full 5 minute flight without this pain. But when I sat down it would subside. I finally had to quit flying and took a ride down the coast and up back home. I had no pain while riding. That night I couch potato'ed it and watched a movie with the wife. When I got up to go to bed, that's when I must have seriously pulled it more. The pain never stopped after that no matter sitting or laying. Standing or walking was near impossible with the pain!

Ticketbait, yes this pain is like a constant charlie horse or cramp. It's CONSTANT and I cannot even find a comfortable position to sit or lay in as it does not go away. Some positions I can lower the pain but it is there all the time since last night. It is in the rear of my right rear but cheek and run deep into my hip. Bottom line doc says it revolves around the lumbar on my back but is felt in the rear end due to the inflamed mussel that run from the back down into the hip and has a sciatic nerve in the middle of the muscle. I have had lumbar back nerve issues once in a while in my life but this is totally different. When I would have a nerve issue with my back, I could always find a position to sit or lay in and have no pain. Only time I would have pain is how I moved. This is completely different and so bad that this is why I took myself to ER. I thought it was something else wrong with me!

Doc said riding the bike might have done it but it could have been many factors as well. He could not tell me that was the cause. But I think because I am using mussels I have not used regularly before that this caused it.

Jerbear, I think I must invest in the seat, do exercises for this area, etc. I don't want this to ruin my fun with the spyder.
