Dates are flexible......we have all summer.

Don't miss your chance to win a FREE water bottle.

Something happened this weekend.

http://www.mydesert.com/article/201...found-dead-after-hike-during-record-heat-wave

In light of this, and thinking of what could....... The group ride, as far as I'm concerned, is off.

That doesn't mean I will not be doing it. It just means I am willing to accept any risk on a personal level, but that's all.

Planned route:

La Quinta, Ca.
Ridgecrest, Ca.
South Trona, Ca.
Stovepipe Wells, Ca.
Beatty, Nv.
Indian Springs, Nv.
Las Vegas, Nv.
La Quinta, Ca.

So not that it is a official ride then. I can understand the concern.

Route is:
15, 395, 190, 374, 95, 15 home.

I have taken the 190 in a car and that could be fun on a spyder.... real curvy!

When is your plan to go? I may want to still hook up.

Bob

We are not going to ride together? I think Redlands is in the center.

I think Jerbear is concerned about putting something this extreme together and someone possibly getting seriously dehydrated or dead. I can understand his concern and someone might blame him as the "unofficial" organizer. Ca. is very litigious! Again I can see his concern regardless.

But if he is going to make the ride and is just looking for company, I am in if the dates are right. I take full responsibility for myself.

But if that does not work out, we should all find a ride somewhere we all can get together!

Bob

Look, more power to you guys for wanting to do this trip, but frankly, I wouldn't do it at these temps for a thrill. You have absolutely no protection out there if something happens. There are areas with no cell signals and even if you did send someone out to get help, if you didn't have shade and water you can be fried. I was in desert search and rescue for 13 years and I have personally seen the results of hyperthermia. Be practical and wait for the temps to come down 10-15 degrees at least. Even in Barstow, when I worked ambulance, I saw people pass out at the gas stations after getting out of their A/C cars. Remember, you will dehydrate quickly on a bike going 70 mph in 120 degree heat. How the bike behaves is anybodys guess. Ann M. from LV had a bunch of codes on a recent short trip in the heat. Just trying to give you guys my feelings but if you go, call or text someone back home your whereabouts frequently.

Desert Spyder, Your wisdom is well received.

A story my father shared with me about training in the Mojave Desert under Gen. Patton. They were being trained for combat in Africa.

The gentleman below....near the same age as my now deceased father, recounted the same exact story pop shared with me years earlier.

Thought you might find it interesting.

While training in the Mojave Desert in 1942, he and his fellow soldiers were put on a diet of canned sardines and fig bars. When stockpiles of these rations were delivered, they would bury them in the desert in hopes of getting something new added to their menu.

Did they buildm different back then. Maybe, maybe not?

Only thing I do know......they were much younger......then ;)

Thanks for the article Jerry. It was a delight to read especially so near our nations birthday.

:agree: and we can always make it (Death Valley ride) a night ride.

I don't know how I missed that this thread was about going to Death Valley. I say Hell Yeah I'm In! :roflblack: I'll be melting master cylinders, parking brake cables, boiling gas and who knows what else but I'm ready.

Date, time, and random thoughts

Like this route and found a possible meeting place. Just in case we all happen to be riding that way. :roflblack:

Have a date/time in mind?

From LQ, it's about 200 miles to the Mobil Station located - 4467 US Highway 395, Inyokern, , CA93527 (it's located just North of where 395/14 intersect.

SpyderAnn is approx 250 miles from there.

Blue Star, approx 135 miles.

Didn't check mileage for you and TB....... best guess.....150 miles(+)

Six or seven AM at the Mobil Station?

Ideas and input.....from others who may just happen to be riding that way?

Google Maps is saying 176 miles (3 hours) for me to that location.
For me it is a split either to go I5 to the 14 or take I15 to the 395. I prefer the 395 route myself.
I assume Jerbear you would take the I15 to the 395 yourself knowing where your coming from?

For those that come the 395 route it would be good to meet at the I15/395 junction. There is a Pilot Travel center right there. Then we go from there to the 14/395 Mobile to meet up with others (1.5 hours from Pilot Center). That also would be turn around time for those that decide not to continue :)

4:30 AM at the pilot center is good for me. Then another 1.5 hours to the 14/395 junction mobile station to be there at 6:00.
Then it's another 3 hours to Beaty (be there at 9:00 AM) and another 2 hours to Vegas from there.
Total time to Vegas would be 8 hours give or take. Then as you know it is 4 hours from Vegas to home roughly.

We going to stop and stay somewhere before Vegas or just a full run to Vegas? I could probably make it to Vegas myself but I think after that, I would stay in Vegas or at the boarder (cheaper rooms) before heading home the next morning.

As for date, again for me late August or sometime in September.

Thoughts?

Bob

If I just happen to be riding that day ;) and happen to be at the I15/395 junction. I know I would have to get gas there, and most likely it would be around 4:30 in the morning.

Since the house is scheduled to be completed late Sept (9/27) I would most likely be riding in that area in the late August/early September time, as the Desert is so nice at that time of the year.

It's not like we are planning anything official :ohyea:
Just people that might be in the area wanting a desert ride to Vegas

Bob

tick.......tock

"4:30 AM at the pilot center I15/395 is good for me." Works for me too.

Go to Vegas or stop before? Either way works for me. Had Vegas in mind as the target stop myself, but, conditions could change that(cheap rooms :roflblack:). Not sure if I would lay over or just get a room rest up and head home after sunset?

Without doubt Ann will have the low down on places to stay.

;)
