There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. FIRE IN THE HOLE

Or holy-crap did I get lucky or what? Midnight last nite wife an I commeong home from the local mini-sprints. At a stop-light in missoula mt, I'm behind my wife:spyder2:, look an see fire burning from under the right side of her 08gs se5. Got her attension , pulled over. It's burning pretty hot, plastics on fire dripping melting pastic on the ground. I had on a pretty heavey pair of gloves,so I started to reach under to try what I could to knock down what ever was burning. at first it wasn't looking good at all, but eventually I was able to put out the flames. Afew minor burns on a couple fingers where the flames melted the gloves, but I'll heal. pretty scarey laying on the ground reaching up with the flames rising up inside the machine.

So on to the problem at hand, tore in to it this morning and what I found might be of intrest. It appears the the fire originated at the foam an foil haet shield that is factory installed on the lower side tupperware. Now the pipes on this machine are wrapped the cannister has been removed, with over 12K miles, this :spyder2: has been very reliabe, wasn't expecting this to pop-up an happen. Just guessing that the foam was the ignition piont, but why after this long. Is it posible some of the other fire in these early machines could have began the same way. This is exacty the same area the every one states the fires come from. Had I just walked to the side of the road an watched, this piece of evidence would have melted into oblivion. I have taken photos an will try my dammdest to post.

Sorry about the burns my man. Sounds like you're on to something. Why so long. Thought. The foam may take the heat until it begins to become a solid from excessive exposure. Then it becomes more of a flammable solid that absorbs a greater amount of heat, surrounded by less dense foam that's easily ignitable. Just a thought.

Old foam not made of the right stuff sounds like a likley culprit to me. Nice work on getting it out after some of the pics i have seen. Hope you get it taken care of.

Josh

Thanks Josh, but not much to take care of. Remove all the remaining foam an foil, trim away the damaged plastic, wash off the soot an smoke residue, put it back together. I will add a small extingusher to the saddle bags LOL. On a side note, there will no longer be "ANY" foil- foam product remaining on this :spyder2:

:yikes: You guys and Doc... You're a bit late to be setting off fireworks though... :opps: Gad to hear that it wasn't any worse than it turned out... There's a millions ways that it could have turned into a nightmare!

Jerbear thanks that a good sort of info will save. On this deal I;m not returning any heat barrier, since I removed the bottom splash pan completly, I think the extra air circulation will make a difference.
So the photos I took didn't show up on the computer, an I'm already finished with the repair. I so didn;t want to lose the photo evidence of thsi near meltdown, but I know what I sall, and this could be a smokeing gun as to the fires that have occured.
Now the only problem is, the wife wants a RT. So her ?? to me was "why didnt you let it burn,so insurence would have been a great down payment on a RT". story of my life hero to zero an back again.

Oh I so don't want her mad at me......but, there's just no makingmhappy:joke: KIDEN of course

OK, now it time to put my jokeing aside. I do not for a moment take my finding trivial or unimportant. so before the usual naysayers get started, save your breath. I to have watched the vidios of the burning spyder, an if I would have stood by and watched for thirty seconds, then I too would have a melted down piese of ****, an be still filling out paper work. I didn't and maybe have seen the evidence that has been missing in the later investigations. The proximity of my fire to the evaporatorfire claims is just too ironic. As I approched this fire from the rear the flames were already riseing up thru the gap in the tupperware and if I hadn't already taken the caccister out I'm sure that would have been my thoughts as to what was burning.

I will take this matter much further than this forum, but the good people on here need to know, so they can decide for themselfs if they want to addresse the foam&foil on these machines.

Other than to hook up to buds, I'm the one an only who lays a hand on my wifes spyder. Her life depends on it. Now after all the care to mininize any chance of this happenning, Bingo, it has jumped up to almost bite us in the arse.

thanks for reading, Gene

Glad things turned out OK...although I sure wouldn't advocate fighting fires by hand. Be sure to file an NHTSA report.

Don't worry about the joking; Sometimes the laughing makes it easier to keep from crying!
The key is that she's okay... :2thumbs:

Minor burns will heal and thank god you were behind to prevent any serious injury to her. I've got an 09 RS so I'll be doing some inspecting. My girlfriend rydes a 12 RSS and I usually ryde behind her too.

Just a up-date, Filled reports with the nhtsa, an brp. Our dealer was shocked by the news, he knows that I had removed the canister, an the fact that a fire had started down in that general area, he was going to call acouple other 08 owners, so he could look for himself if there are other :spyder2:s with the foam starting to get hard or show signs of heat damage to the foam. don;t expect I'll even hear back from BRP, we'll see.

I don't think I would just discard the foam... It could be there to prevent the tupperware from getting too hot and warping. Maybe add a "foam inspection" to the regular maintenance schedule?

shelbydave, the foams gone,if there's warpage I'll replace the side panel and find another product to shield the heat away. But for now, with the bottom splash panel also removed, I'm hopeing for a little extra air circulation to aid in the cooling. Inspection sounds good, but not taking the chance one fires enough.

I have heat taped my headers on the right side to keep the down heat to the brake master cyclinder, the gas line and filter, and my feet. The Can-am Spyders RS type seems to catch on fire on the lower mid right side. I am handicapped and if my Spyder caught on fire when my wife and I are riding I may not be able the get off before the fire would kill me.
