• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

Filling the fuel tank

Okay, I'll bite. What's the wedge? I am not going to give my directions for filling here because I got "flamed" for my opinion in days gone by. Appropriate for a gas tank thread though. :roflblack::roflblack:

When i filled my 08Gs and nursed the gas in' The gauge will at the ''very'' top show a bar shaped like a wedge/triangle.
 
Thanks for the update. That is what I was thinking. I have done 184 and 5.8 as my personal highest fill. Also on the 08 GS

I only put the nozzle in about 2 inch.
I fill on slow and when it shuts off I have but in about 6 gallons and have driven 140 miles.
 
In all likelihood, you are filling your emissions canister. The best way I have found to fill is to insert the nozzle into the tank just past the opening...an inch at the most. Fill slowly, and stop as soon as gas starts to spit out of the vent slots. If you try to top it off a bit more, be absolutely sure to stop as soon as gas spits out the second time. Anything more and you will likely overflow gas out of the vent into the emissions canister. That ruins the canister, and is a fire hazard.


:agree: and I never fill the tank and let the spyder sit. I only fill the tank when I am going out riding.

Unless you are storing the Spyder (or any power toy) - then it's advisable to fill the tank along with some fuel stabilizer. Reduces the empty volume that can let moisture accumulate.

This is what I do, also. Over filling is not a good thing...

Can't Once the charcoal inside it gets saturated it's ruined, 86 it, And get a new one, Or probably your best bet is to eliminate all together.
Do a search on the canister.
 
The mysterious "wedge"

If the emissions system and vent are working, and you don't overflow any more gas to it, the gas will eventually evaporate, but it takes a very long time...even months. The canister will be ruined as far as emissions go, and will not absorb any further odors, so you will get the smell easier from here on out. The best answers are replacement or a canisterectomy.
 
I started the thread and thank all those that have responded. First, I only fill my bike when going on a ride never when putting it in the garage except when leaving for extended periods. Second, I fill the bike as slow as possible when fueling and only put the nozzle in less than an inch. So if I am hearing correctly from the majority, to keep from putting fuel into the fuel canister that creates a problem, I am shorting myself well over a gallon of fuel when filling. My garage does have a slight gas smell after parking the RT with almost an empty tank so sounds to me like the only real solution is canisterectomy. Just my opinion, but with the worst gas mileage that I have ever had on any bike, it seems like a real waste that we can't fill the bike to capacity. I am not complaining about the cost of fuel to run the RT, but the range, my bike is basically a 125 mile range bike when not being able to fill it to capacity. I ride with a large group, 2-3 times a week and I am always one of the few that need gas first. We ride the back roads to lunch usually about 80-100 miles one way and then return, and sometimes there aren't gas stations readily available. I do carry a 1.5 gallon crush proof approved can just in case. My other two bikes are quite capable of about 210 mile range as is most of the newer HD's and BMW's that I ride with. Again, thanks for all the input, will be performing surgery shortly.

:agree: this eliminated the gas smell for me for the most part... once you get used to it you can go a bit faster at first but the last gallon or two I go as slow as possible and sup as soon as fuel exits the vent slits.

Great advice here. I really like the idea of a canisterectomy. What a stupid design in the first place. All bitching aside, can anyone post (or direct me to) some clear and concise photos of where the canister is located for a current RT. Perhaps some before and after pics?? I did look at previous links regarding this and only found info on doing it to a RS and most of the pics were not clear or to dark. I'm glad to hear that others have done this without problems. Thanks in advance for any and all help.:thumbup:
 
Crap...

Wow....crap....didn't know this. I've been overfilling a few times which means I probably got gas in the canister. I was thinking that it was tank expansion the reason I could get another 1.5 gallons in the tank after the auto-click-off from the pump. I'd sit there for 4 minutes tapping the pump to put as much in there as possible. So it's not more fuel getting in the tank, the fuel is going to a canister......crap.....:banghead:
