• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. Filling the fuel tank

I have brought this up before but want to get some more opinions. Today when filling up and I do it very carefully, when the gas pump shut off supposedly telling me I am full, I kept putting fuel in very, very slowly. I probably hit the nozzle lever 100 times for a split second allowing the fuel to drain in the tank without overflowing. I put in 1.3 gallons using this system after the initial fill up and shut off. This took probably about 2 minutes to get the extra 1.3 gallons in. Do I have a venting problem or is this typical of filling a spyder. This is a 2011 RT.

It's typical [normal], Nature of the beast. If you pull the nozzle out a little while filling'
it will make it easier to fill.

That's what I do, don't put the nozzle into the tank very far and set the auto cut-off on the slowest fill speed.

In all likelihood, you are filling your emissions canister. The best way I have found to fill is to insert the nozzle into the tank just past the opening...an inch at the most. Fill slowly, and stop as soon as gas starts to spit out of the vent slots. If you try to top it off a bit more, be absolutely sure to stop as soon as gas spits out the second time. Anything more and you will likely overflow gas out of the vent into the emissions canister. That ruins the canister, and is a fire hazard.

:agree: You've got to be careful about filling that canister; the same issue exists with your car, only it's not quite as easy to get tripped up by it...

If you are not getting the last wedge showing on your fuel gauge you're not filling the tank. I've met some people that didn't even know there was a wedge at the top of the gauge because they'd never filled their tank.

I usually get about 25 miles before my top wedge goes away.

lets see a pic of this wedge!

lets see a pic of this wedge!

:agree: I have never filled it to the point where it automatically clicks OFF! Overfilling it or topping it off is just not worth it to me!!
I usually add an appropriate amount to the tank about 3 miles from my house on the return trip so it sits Fairly Full?
My light goes on after about 100 miles Soo I know I,m not topping it off!!!
Would love to see the Wedge so I know what it looks like?:dontknow:

What Wedge? :hun: I am a new spyder owner and would like to know what to look for when filling my tank. I have had the same issue with the automatic shut off and learned that I need to pull the hose out of the tank a little to finish filling it. If there is an easier way to know when it is full I would like to learn it. :f_spider:

My best was 196 miles and it didn't take quite 6 gallons when I filled up. I'm one of those who put as much fuel in my Spyder as physically possible. I'm very good at topping off. But I DO NOT have a canister so I never have to worry about it. The very worst I can get is a little fuel pumped out the vent hose (which I've never had happen).

I don't fill up and then park my Spyder. The closest gas station is 7 miles from my house so by the time I get home, I've always got a bit of air space in my tank.

Works great for me.

I have got to admit i have seen "the wedge" at the top. I am a bad boy:lecturef_smilie:. Most times though, I am in too much of a hurry to get back on the bike and once it clicks once, I am done filling it. Does the RS-S come with a canister? I have never had a fuel smell other than when I am filling the tank. I am also lucky in that I have a minimum of 12 miles to get home from the nearest gas station. Guess I am lucky to live out here in "the boondocks" :ohyea:

i'm beginning to think this wedge thing is a "Myth" someone please bring the in the myth masters and show us this wedge.

No myth, It's there And it's been there from day one. The first time i filled the tank [April 08] till the last time i filled it [Aug 2011] it's been there. :dontknow:

Okay; the wedge exists on the GS/RS models... What about the RTs? has anybody gotten a wedge out of them?? :yikes: :roflblack:

Okay, I'll bite. What's the wedge? I am not going to give my directions for filling here because I got "flamed" for my opinion in days gone by. Appropriate for a gas tank thread though. :roflblack::roflblack:
