Filling gas to the rim or?

Hi folks!
When filling up your gas, do you stop at the pump shut-off or do you fill it to the rim? (Well, not quite the rim because closing the gas cap will cause overfill, but you know what I mean).
When filling up the gas comes up to the rim and then bubbles/settles down into the tank. It does this several times before I can't fit anymore into it. Is this a bad idea? Should I just stop when it clicks off the first time?

That's exactly what I do most times. Haven't had any troubles. 2600 miles.

Here's what I do.....

Wise member here (Nancys Toy) figured this to be just the right point for filling your tank. When the cut off kicks in move the nozzel up just inside the rim of the filling tube and continue slowly till it bubbles around the breather slots..Then your as full as you should be. More and you will fill the canister etc...:thumbup:

I do what you do and have not experienced any known problems doing so.

A slight variation, but similar. I do not use automatic shut off. Fill to ring, stop, let the gas settle and fill up to ring second time. Done. Requires a steady hand and good control on the dispensing handle.

For those of us that live in a nanny state that use the elephant vapor collection nozzle, this easily defeats that feature and allow a real top off to fill. It came with my bike but would not be hard to make

Why not just do what you do with your car or truck?

Just looking at the service manual for the Critter & it looks like the EVAP canister is located above the tank. And the vent valve in the tank is also at the highest point so there is a very small chance of flooding the EVAP canister. I'm not saying that it can't happen thou.

Wasn't this a problem with the pre-2014 models?? Just asking, not sure. Thanks.

If I am going a distance after fillup, I go to the brim, you never know where the next stop will be. If I am headed to the barn, I never go to the brim. When the bike is stored, temps vary, especially when brought in hot. you should always leave room for temperature expansion.

Why not just do what you do with your car or truck?

On my truck, I almost always fill it to the rim, and when I do, its filled and there isn't much "settling" of the gas. When I do it with the Spyder, there seems to be an usual amount of "settling" and it seems that it might not be the right thing to do. I know you're usually not supposed to top off and I just want to be sure it's not causing any kind of issue with any of the sensors

Yes and yes......IF the nozzle lever feels really stiff, like many of them do.

I've found that many times it makes a nasty mess by going past the first shutoff.

AND.... I have found that the additional you can get in by pulling the nozzle out a bit and going for the second click really isn't much.
But I still do 2 clicks. Maybe someday I'll convince myself to stop doing that.

While I agree that could be really good advice............most of the gas pumps that I have used don't have a "slowly" setting.
The flow is either OFF or ON FULL BLAST.
That makes it impossible to finesse the level.

You can't do it this way because The Spyder has no NECK ....you can see the top of the tank ...... on your car / trk there is generally more than 8 inches of pipe before it gets to the Tank .... on the Spyder you can actually see the gas tank ..... Mike :thumbup:

I also do the same thing, I fill up gas tank, until I can't fit any more gas in. I have a 2014 RTS-SE6 with 21,800 miles. No problems.

You are partly correct , some owners - the ones that have / had the V-twin engine and the way BRP routed the gas overflow and the position / location of the EVAP / Charcoal canister .... This ALL changed with the 1330 engine & frame .... Now only fumes can reach the canister ....not gas ...... Mike :thumbup:

I have Never filled it till it clicks off? I don't take long trips . Its Not worth replacing a canister or gas fumes? Do whats best for you!!!
