Fatal Spyder crash in Oregon

A very unfortunate incident. Thoughts and prayers go out for all involved.

I don't think there was enough information to determine who was legally at fault. We don't know if the driver of the car gave a signal, what the relative speeds were, or, really, any other conditions involved. But, as always, the operator of the smaller vehicle loses. As others have said, we must always ride as if every other vehicle on the road is actively trying to kill us. The fact that there was a road available for the Volkswagen to turn on should be enough to warn the rider not to pass, whether there was a turn signal given or not.

I hate that a fellow rider lost her life. If we all use this tragedy as a reminder to ride defensively, then her life won't be lost in vain.

In this case, the spyder was not ridden rationally. The car is not at fault.

:agree:There's two things that can get you killed fast, Going into a curve hot, Or passing another vehicle when there's a spot for that vehicle to turn left into.
Can anyone say that they NEVER made a spontaneous turn and not used a turn signal?

Sorry folks, if I am riding behind a vehicle that is slowing down approaching an intersection and "attempting to make a left turn", I don't pass on either side - especially since intersections are marked with lines painted on the road prohibiting passing prior to the intersection, and more than likely signs posted that say "no passing". While sorry she died, I have to say the spider rider was at fault here.

Either or??

My condolences to the family. I know what it is to lose a loved one to a senseless accident.

Although I do not have a bike at this time I can tell you that the ONLY way to survive out on our public roads is to RIDE DEFENSIBLY and never, ever, never trust any kind of vehicle that is on the road with you. Not even other SPYDER riders!!
People are stupid and they do stupid things all of the time. You have to ride like everyone is out to knock you off of your ride all of the time. You have to wear ATGATT!!!
That Spyder is loaded with technology that can safe your life in just such a situation. Put the ABS, stability control and traction control to good use and you just may save your own life.
Looking at the photo you can see the road that the VW was making a left onto. Then notice how very far the Spyder went before it landed and then stopped. A LOOOONG Ways it appears. This alone would say the Spyder was travelling way to fast for the situation. Car slowing down, left turn possible due to a road being on the left of the car. Slow down and wait to see what the car in front of you is doing. A mere few seconds of patience may just save your life.
There is a time for speed and there are times for patience. This time appears like patience and caution were called for.
Again, I am sorry for the loss of their loved one but it is apparent that certain skills and thought processes were not used. I would love to know how much riding experience this lady had prior to owning her Spyder.

Very Respectfully,
JoeSpyder

Two of my many personal rules:

1. Do not pass a car that is going extremely slow on a country road before adjusting to the speed of the car, making sure there are no possible driveways or roads to the left, trying to get the car driver's attention, signaling my intentions, and accelerating with caution to pass, keeping an eye on the front wheels of the vehicle. Any slight change to indicate a possible lane change, and I am braking! Do I break this rule at times? Yes I forget at times and fuss at myself after I do it.

2. Do not anticipate any vehicle to do as the turn signals indicate, especially if they are signaling a turn off a road onto the one I am on.

This accident was very tragic, no matter who is to blame.

what I am hearing . .

is some good stuff, we all know the danger of driving and being exposed rather than confined to a steel cage. Don't let the rest of us have to deal with the loss of fellow Spyder ryders . . . be safe, error on the side safe. Bless all of you!

Just curious... Does anyone besides me use the horn when passing someone over the yellow line?
:dontknow:
I found that by using your horn it's like your asking permission to pass, And some times you won't get it,Then the race is on.
Kinda like your in traffic and you put on your signal light to change lanes, And the guy next to you sees the signal and speeds up to close the space.

Events like these are always a tragedy and we tend to criticize those involved. The bottom line is that someone has lost their life - family and friends are now missing one of their own. No one involved is likely to get over it anytime soon. My prayers for her family and friends as well as the parties in the other vehicle. Drive smart, drive safe! God Bless...

Amen to that!!

Condolences

How sad to read this, and send my prayers to all those involved. I am sure both the ryders family and the cage driver and passenger are very upset right now. Does anyone know if she was registered on SpyderLovers.com?
