Expedition Version?

I've seen some video blogs about motorcycle adventure touring. And the son of a friend has done adventure touring in Austrailia. They used a BMW bike and he enjoyed it so much he bought one when he came home.

I love to travel and, watching the videos, I think of how much fun that would be. But I don't ride a 2-wheeler so good, and the Spyder os too delicate a flower for that kind of travel. Wouldn't it be cool if Can-Am made an expedition version of a Spyder? It would have to be higher off the ground, and the nanny would have to be toughened up.

I don't think I'd buy one, but if it was available for rent at adventure destinations, I'd certainly consider such a trip.

Would you be interested in such a Spyder? Or in expedition ryding on a Spyder? What else would have to be different to make such a version?

My bro-in-law is doing such a trip next month and the only thing I have is a Spyder, so no way I could join him. I don't see it taking long, before a quad or three wheeler is unable to pass through some of the sections. It would be restricted to fire roads and suck only. For that, we have quads or side by sides. I don't see that idea flying at all, but it would be nice to have a bit more ground clearance and on the fly suspension adjustments, so you can pull into a dirt lot or field without concern...

Are 4-wheelers highway-worthy? I'm thinking of a guy who went all over South America on the same bike. If a quad would be street-legal, that would do it, I guess.

I don't know if a trike design would be the best configuration off road, you can't dodge enough potholes and rocks like you can with two wheels.

The Ural with sidecar has been used in some really great adventures. Rider magazine recently published an article about a man on an around the world journey on a Ural.

I believe the :spyder2: in its current configuration is not a good candidate for an expedition bike (although a few have done this).

Other than knobby front tires and double knobby rear tires I beleive that they did a chain conversion instead of a belt, slicked up the front end so as to not snag on anything and then put protective bars on the lights. No information about the engine internal or whether Nanny is resident or not.

It also looks to me as if they cut away some of the front Tupperware to increase the approach angles... :2thumbs:

I've been on a dirt road for 20 miles... Wishing I was on my Ural; my RT broke a couple of parts... Never found the right speed on corrugated sand!
