Excessive Heat has been a problem

Hear is what it looks like after I cut the excess off from the 2014 grille. I used tin snips there is a bit of cutting to do and then my grinder to smooth the edges.

And props to mantago who got me started here is his picture of what needs to be cut. I suggest not snipping the front clip off like I did you can pop rivet it with a black BRP rivet but it still fits without it just a little loose and the wind/ fan pressure keeps it in place

... slows a deflector panel under the side Tupperware (Both Sides) that is ONLY on the 2013 RS and ST models. It was not there prior to 2013... I think this deflector keeps more heat under the Tupperware and this Helps heat up the Gas Tank and Master cylinder area.

Those 2 "deflector panels" do look like they would trap allot of heat and restrict air flow under the Tupperware near the exhaust. They are easy to remove so I'm going to try running without them.

Oddly enough there was a thread last year where some pre-2013 RS owners were adding them !!

Thanks I know I feel heat coming from the pipe on my left side opening on my 09GS BUT I would rather a little heat escaping than having No Where for it to go except heat up the Gas Tank and Master cylinders.
As I recall some with heat melting problems felt No exterior heat around them Soo I guess it did a job on the inside parts without them knowing?:dontknow:

1st post

As a noobie here (1st post) I am grateful for this thread. My wife wants to ride with me but not on the back of my sportbike any more. She's never ridden a motorcycle or scooter so I thought a spyder would be great for her. I test rode one at a dealership and loved it. I'm still in sticker shock so we are looking for a good clean used one. I don't think I'll be looking at any 2013's thanks to those who had the courage to complain about the heat issues here. I have bought many BRP products over the years, mostly snowmobiles but have zero knowledge of the can-am spyder so I'm trying to educate myself here before spending a lot of money. Thanks for all the comments both positive and negative and as far as forums go, you guys are pretty tight. You should see how out of hand the sled forums get!:)

You are going to find all Spyders (RT's) prior to 2014 have the right foot heat issue in hot weather. It is the nature of the beast. I have tamed mine with a 2014 grille cut to fit the right side hole to a great extent. The 2013 issue may be taken care of under the Tupperware with the latest ECM update only time will tell...So far mine seems better.

Great group of folks

Welcome aboard. Don't allow this thread and its topic chase you away from spyders in general. They truly are a great and worthwhile machine. Like many other machines...they have their warts. None of them would preclude me from doing it all over again.

Again....Welcome aboard!

I'm not scared away at all by the hot foot issue but the engine compartment heating does seem to be a relevant issue and something I'm glad to be aware of thanks to this forum. I wasn't referring to the hot right foot issue but boiling gasoline and melted master cylinders gets my attention. We're probably not in a position to buy a 2013 anyway and would be looking for a 2010-12 based on pricing. I would love for my wife to ride one but she doesn't have her MTC endorsement so I guess that's out of the question unless it's a parking lot ride. Today I rode a Honda silverwing trike conversion and it was a rattle trap compared to the spyder. You guys will probably get sick of me very quickly as I'll probably be asking a thousand questions before I buy anything. I did the same thing on the ski doo forum before buying two 2013' sleds but I made an informed decision and couldn't be happier with my purchase. BTW, the ACE triple in the ski doo chassis was a huge hit this winter with no reports of any issues which is amazing for a first year snowmobile. Too bad the 2014 spyders cost more than a new buick regal or I'd really want that engine! Thanks for the welcome

If your location was Ca instead of Pa

the two of you would be more than welcome to test ride mine. Dealer rides offered by the dealerships who even offer them, are hardly long enough to get a real feel. I did the lions share of my pre purchase investigating here on SL. Then purchased mine and test rode it 1600 miles back home. It was my first spyder ride, and one I will remember for a long time.

LOL.. thanks for the offer but definitely too far away. The one I test rode was in Naples FL. They were good about letting me take it out for quite a while. This is going to be a long interesting journey but hopefully we'll end up with a spyder in the family when all is said and done

Great

from the begining. A little time spent searching the subject will verify that. What changed and aided in deminishing heat complaints by pre 2013 owners was the introduction of the 13's. Simply because instead of getting better. The heat got worse.

People have been cutting, drilling, removing, and creating homemade air flow management systems since almost day one. All with varying results. Pick your poison. It may or may not work for you.

Heat management for the spyder is a cottage industry.

And the beat goes on.

I spent 122.00 from spyderpops no more heat problems

Hope it continues to meet your needs. :doorag:

I have owned my 2008 RS SM5 since 2008 - the single best change I made for engine overheat mitigation was to add a manual switch to turn on the fan.

Once my bike warms up to operating temperature (3 bars) - I turn the fan on and leave it on while riding and a little while once bike is turned off.

This is the approach that my Yamaha FZ1 did automatically, so hay I gave it a shot on my Spyder, and it continues to work great for me.

On rare super hot high humidity days I will see 4 bars but never higher. No fault codes are thrown - fortunately.

In my experience once the fan automatically turns on (usually 5 bars) the engine was so hot on a hot day it couldn't cool down.

Naturally this may or may not work for others.

"broken record" becomes NHTSA Investigation.

:doorag:

:roflblack::roflblack::roflblack::roflblack:

I honestly believe that the NHTSA investigation doesn't involve someone's foot getting hot because it is inches from the radiator / fan...

Nice try though...

I will pop in here and say, though some people have had heat issues, I've never had any with my 2011 RT-AC.

None.

And I ride during the summer in Florida.

2013 Extreme heat

I would be willing to trade up for a 2014 RTS but I am on a fixed income, I have Multiple Sclreosis and the heat make my condition worse, the dealers are ready to deal unless tou are trading a 2013 RTS with 2,000.00 miles, I hope this resolved through the DOT and NHRSTA. I love to ride but my balance is bad.
