Etymotics Ear Buds

After reading a previous thread about the importance of ear-plugs, I've decided that I need to get something. I would really like to get a set of ear buds that block dangerous noise, while providing decent audio quality. I'm going to use them with my iPod at first, but then hopefully in conjunction with an intercom for my wife and I. I am looking at the Etymotics ER-6i, but am curious if anyone on this site has experience with them. Thanks as always for the insightful information.

I've been through about 8 sets of ear buds on the Spyder. My problem is the cord will get to whipping in the wind and then break the little wires in the ear buds.:chill: Now with a ipod it may not be too bad:dontknow: but I was hooked into my xm.:sour:

I now have a set of SHURE ear buds and they are working great. The wire they use is three time as large as most ear buds and you can replace the section that's been going bad on me. I've yet to have any issues with them and the sound is killer. :doorag:

I have tried earbuds, but had the same problems with breakage. Besides, they hurt my ears inside a helmet, in combination with my glasses. Now I use the helmet mic and speakers that came with my comm system. They have worked great for several years now.

I don't have personal experience with those particular ear buds. I do not have a problem with cord breakage as others have mentioned. I always run the earphone/bud cord inside my jacket. Ear phones/buds are illegal in Fla. so I try to keep the cord out of site. Helmet speakers however are perfectly legal. I wear NR 14 earplugs with the helmet set that has speakers and can hear music, my passenger or the GPS just fine. If I am by myself, I usually use a helmet without speakers, so I have a pair of NR 20 earphones that I made myself to listen to a portable radio or MP3 player.

I just got the Westone UM-1 earbuds, they have noise dampening about 25 decibles and stereo sound. The wire is braided (hopeully this is stronger than other set-ups) and wraps over your ear. Fits well inside a HJC helmet.

We are planning our big trip this summer and I am going to use a post amplifier with two ports (for myself and wife) from my Garmin 550 with the XM antenna. The post amp, I haven't decided , either wired into bike 12V system or just use some AA batteries. I've decided that microphone systems are very annoying unless full helmets, and we can always give handsignals when we want to stop, restroom, etc. Just want some wind noise reduction and good music. With the Garmin, I can (1) bluetooth the phone to my 12v outlet, see incoming calls, can't answer back, but can always see who's calling and decide to stop or call back later. (2) Run the XM and traffic and weather radio, or listen to the SD disc with pre-loaded MP-3 songs, and (3) hear "Simone" - our gal inside the Garmin 550 tell us we missed the turn!

P.S. SSG Bean - waiting for my seat to return from Russell Day Long, and hopefully by end of month we can hook-up (4 of us) for a short ride.

I have the Etymotic ER-6i buds and they work very well. I use them with my iPod and a wireless remote. The iPod goes in my inside jacket pocket so the wires aren't exposed to any wind.

The noise reduction of the buds allows a low volume level so you don't blast your ears and if you keep the volume down you can still hear what's around you.

Turned off, they still act as earplugs.

Hey Bimjo, do you think you can tell a great difference in sound quality with the wind factor and muffler noise compared to when not riding? Or just all around sound quality?

Thanks to everyone for the great information.

--CPT Ryder - Let me know when you're good to go. Hopefully we get some more mild weather like we've had in the past couple weeks!!

Any other Kansas City area ryders that want to get together, contact myself or captainryder. My wife and I would love to ride with new friends.:D

I use both the Etymotic ER-20's and the ER-6i's. However, the ER-20's are the only thing I'd use on a motorbike or the Spyder because I prefer to listen out for engine noise, other vehicles and emergency sirens. Listening to music while riding is just plain stupid but that's only my personal opinion. Besides, it's illegal here in the UK although it's a crazy law because it isn't the same for car drivers listening to really loud music on their in car entertainment systems! Not sure about anywhere else however.

I agree with some of your statement. I want to hear some noise, but I would like to have it reduced. The point of having a headphone that isolates is to reduce the noise and set a comfortable volume before I hit the road. That way, the music volume is low enough to avoid hearing damage and avoid completely overiding the environmental noise(ie, other cars, some of the engine noise, and emergency vehicles). I do, however, disagree that listening to music while riding is stupid. As long as safety is still the primary focus, listening to music at a conservative level is fine. I think most of the isolating headphones only reduce environmental noise by roughly 25%.

Well, I sort of agree that very low volume music would be fine but my ER-6i's are so good at canceling out background noise that it is very hard to hear anything other than the music. At least with my ER-20's I can hear everything as I would do normally, just at 20db less. I can even hear people talk to me with them in and a helmet on, yet they cut out all annoying high speed wind noise.

That's great to know! I'll start looking for the 20 as opposed to the 6. I appreciate the conversation.:2thumbs:

Just in case you hadn't already realised the ER-20 is just an earplug, not an earphone. You can't listen to music with the ER-20's.

I am sitting in my office with foam in my ear as I am getting some custom ear plugs made. I should have done this long time ago but after yesterdays ride I was convinced. I got the ones called biker buddies 26DB with a adapter for my ipod.....in red ofcourse to match my Spyder.:D

I am very intrigued by those. The way the cords come out it makes me wonder if they can somehow be customized to run into the plug of my J & M cords so that I could just those instead of the in helmet speakers. That way I would be eliminating wind noise at high speed during my long hauls, but still can her my ipod and my husband through the CB. Hmmm, will have to look into this a bit. Also, I didn't see a price any where. I will have to check and see if they have a reg website with prices listed.

yeah the have a website, they will pretty much do whatever you would want. Guranteed for 5 years, they keep your mold for 5 years as well, incase you want to order more. Cost me $112 CDN all taxes in but with a 5 yr warranty its well worth it for me with a 90 day money back gurantee.

UPDATE:

I rode around 600 miles over the weekend and it was the first time I had these ear plugs. I must say its the best MOD I have done for my well being. They fit perfect, they filter everything to a voice level and no more ringing in my ears after highway riding. Best $100 I have spent.

After checking out all the various earbuds that played music, I decided to go with the Westone UM1. WOW, these are nice. They fit nicely and you can barely tell they are in your ears even under a helmet. If you don't have any music on, they do a very nice job as a noise canceling earplug. When you do play your music, the sound is fantastic and you don't have to turn it up that loud even while riding at highway speeds to be able to hear. All these things said, I would highly recommend them. I have been riding with them for almost two weeks now and just love them. One other bonus, they are made in the USA, so I get to support our home turf economy.

Now the question to anyone out there. I have looked at a number of various bluetooth devices out there. I would love to pair these earbuds with my new iphone. What I need is a bluetooth device that has a plug for earbuds instead of a headset but still has a microphone. Does that exist out there? I don't have to worry about pairing with a GPS or bike to bike as I can do it all with my iphone. For $79 I can download an updatable GPS app that will give turn by turn directions right on my phone. Brian has a phone too and with free mobile to mobile, we can just call each other when we need more than hand signals to convey our needs while riding. I have a RAM mount bracket to hold my phone and will be getting the Aqua Box for it in the near future. So I will have a lot less clutter on my handlebars. Just my iphone and my cupholder and occasionally my other video camera.

What I am currently trying is running my cord from my iphone into a Griffit iTalk that allows you to talk and take calls by voice command through the little microphone. But I have to figure out how to mount it in my helmet. Also, when I tried it with my shorty, it is so sensitive to the noise, that the wind noise alone kept changing the songs on me.

If anyone has ideas out there, I would love to hear them.
