Engine Replacement Timeline?

Back at the end of January, a friend at work stopped me, somewhat out of the blue, to tell me that he and the wife had just bought a 2014 Spyder ST. Neither of them had a motorcycle license, but had signed up for an MSF class a few weeks later. (I surprised him in the same discussion to tell him that I had just bought a Spyder as well, trading in my BMW on an F3.) We've ridden together several times since. Each time we've been together, or that I've seen him at work, he's commented about how excited he was for the end of July when they were going to take the Spyder back home to Wyoming and go for rides with his brothers and kids, all of whom have ridden motorcycles for years.

I got a text from him last weekend that he had an issue with the Spyder when they were out on a day trip to Oklahoma- they were a couple hours from home. He heard a bang, then the engine got quite loud and would die at idle. He called up a buddy, who drove a trailer up there to pick them and the Spyder up and bring them back home. He got the news from the dealer today - spark plug tip broke off in the cylinder. The engine needs to be replaced. They had about 3,800 miles on it - not bad considering they only had their MC licenses since late February and all of the rain we've had this spring. He's really bummed that it happened, especially since he may not get to take the Spyder to the family get-together - a big impetus for him getting it in the first place. So, the question for the group is - how long should he expect it to take for an engine replacement? For those who have had to go through this, how long did it take? I know someone on the F3 board had a wrong engine shipped in 8 days or so, so engines can be shipped reasonably quickly.

My friend suggested that he'd just have to take my F3 to Wyoming. I told him he couldn't do that, because he'd want an F3 after driving it around for a week! [emoji6]

Not an everyday occurrence for sure. It's going to depend on a lot of logistics and all the warranty stuff that goes on between dealer and BRP. It is also going to depend on the mechanics involved once the new engine arrives. I would recommend not rushing the put back together process. It would be good to make sure they get that right.

I am with loisk on this one. I know for a fact the dealer I work with would not wait for me to ask, he would be handing me the keys to a loaner before I had a chance to ask... :thumbup:

:agree: The only thing that comes to mind is s@&t happens and he got to experience one of those one-in-a-million things... I'd definitely be interested in seeing that spark plug! (I'd think BRP might be interested, too)

Because he said it got really loud all of a sudden, I thought it could have been a broken exhaust due to a bad weld - that happened to our friend Warp10 a couple years ago. Apparently the exhaust was ok.

It does happen! I had a '59 chev where the electrode came out of the spark plug and went through the top of the piston.:cus:

Technically; that's not an "engine" problem... (Although it sure ends up being one!)
That starts out as a spark plug problem, and then things get ugly! :banghead: :gaah:

UPDATE - Kudos to BRP

Have to give a huge shout out to BRP customer service for taking care of my friend's Spyder. BRP arranged to provide him a loaner F3 to use on his trip and until his Spyder is repaired!! :yes: It was ready for him to pick it today at a local dealer (not the dealer where he bought it and took it for service). He leaves for his family reunion trip in a week and is really looking forward to riding the Spyder with his family. On top of that, BRP will be shipping his ST to a dealer in Denver to do the engine replacement. We suspect it's because his dealer's shop has more work than time at the moment. With the lakes in the DFW area finally full and usable, I know the local dealers have had a lot of work to do with jet ski maintenance.

Glad they are working for him. Me not so much. two case, overheating been going on since first part of June. In to checked, nothing found. Broken windshield arm in the middle and after a couple weeks of back forth Between dealer and BRP, said they would cover part cost, but I would have to pay labor ( for a known design fault ?) Super overheating back in shop July 6. still there ? Reportly BRP will cove cost of 2013 cooling up grade , waiting on parts. My problem is, it has not run hot in the previous 25 K regardless of weather. Have to wait and get it back to see it this works or not. Kind of hard for a"ride anytime guy" to tell people (two of the same m/c club) his ride has been in the shop this long.

That is great that they are taking care of your friend so well. Though they should have given him an ST loaner..:dontknow: new tactic :dontknow: they are loaning F3's out a lot and as you say he will get back wanting an F3...:roflblack: great he will get to be with the family on a spyder...:thumbup:
