There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. Engine Oil

BRP recommends 5w/40 and then sells most customers 10w-40 oil for their Spyder (blended version - only the 'Full Synthetic' is 5w-40).

I have to disagree. What they sell as full synthetic (what it's called) is 0w-40 and their blended is 5w-40.

On the web site xpslubricants.com the file name for the synthetic oil is BRP Synthetic 4T 0W40 _2213_ and on the semi synthetic is MSDS BRP Semi Syn 5W40 _2192_. On the first page of the MSDS for the semi Syn also list is as 5w-40.

and i do buy BRP oil from lynn hoy in wingham , but even though they are a BRP dealer , they are not allowed to sell or repair spyders .they cant even order parts for me .i just got a new honda 750 shadow from them about a month ago .

I think it sucks that good BRP dealers with excellent customer service are not able to sell or service Spyders. I have such a dealer 15 minutes from my house. Yet BRP gave dealerships to folks that have no idea what customer service is. So now I have to drive 1.5 hours to get the service I think I should expect. Some limited Spyder parts are available from non Spyder dealers. Stuff that is used cross platform and they have the same part number.

Well, how about that! Maybe BRP isn't using Castrol anymore. Both MSDS files say 'Version IV'. So I should change my post to 'Used to' I guess. I am sure that is why there is no information on the BRP oil containers. That way they can change product without having to change the container.

Neither document states whether they are using true synthetic or 'Legal' synthetic base oils, though this is typical in an MSDS sheet.

So, I stand corrected and I thank you for the information.

yes it is only 45 minutes to wingham and 1 1/2 hours minimum to get to two wheel in guelph .to sell the spyder at lynn hoy , BRP demanded they renovate the whole dealership .they could never sell enough to recover the cost .but BRP isnt the only company to treat us like we live in the arctic .if you buy an acura ,warranty work can only be done at an acura dealer .lots of fun having to drive 2 hours to get work done .we no longer buy acuras......

Always liked the line in the manual about always checking the container for API information. Say the people who don't put any API information on their oil jugs :banghead: :banghead: :hun:

Ride safe,

i checked a bottle of the mobil 1 10/40 synthetic motorcycle oil .it does not carry the SM designation .the car oil carries the SM designation (and a 6.00 /litre cheaper price tag )but no stock of the motorcycle oil at cdn tire for 2 months now .

Sounds like old stock to me. The mobil 1 web site lists it as rated SM.

bottle of mobil 1 i have is called 4xt so that does explain the designation .it must be old stock .to bad they changed it , used to be 3.00 cheaper than the amsoil .probably why they are out of stock now .with the new change schedule at 7500KM , it really is not that expensive to run the amsoil anyway .

Sounds like the new version is fine for the engine. Not so much for the clutch.

You're right. There are a lot of oils out there that are just fine for the engine. But they will ruin your clutch. Some have tried these oils only to find that their clutch is slipping. If they catch it quickly the oil can be changed out to a properly spec-ed oil and be fine. But if it is not corrected quickly you'll be purchasing a new clutch.

It's much better to simply stay on the plantation and use an oil that is within BRP specs. I love going outside the box as there are always things you can do to improve your ride. But for some things, it's wise to stay inside the box.

I use 5W40 Full Synth from Motul designed for Motorcycles. Meets all the requirements and is a true 5W40 runs quieter in the engine and seems to run cooler as well (just slightly not major) but every bit helps.

get it by the case to get free shipping. but cant go wrong with Baja Ron packages. lots use his stuff on here....

The Long and Winding road of oil choices...

I e mailed Mobil regarding this oil and the Can Am application, and recieved the reply all is well, its good to use. I have that little lingering voice in my head that says "SM raiting on the bottle". I am not going to use the Mobile 1 as a result of that. I checked out Valvoline website, and their line of full synthetic motor oils is NOT SM raited, so going with these. I have 500 miles on my new ST, and am waiting until about 800 for the first dealer oil change / check out. What you guys think?

There are a lot of choices in 10W-40. So my thinking is why use something that may possibly (?????) cause a problem and BRP tells you not to use. Pick something else that is not rated SM.

My mechanic--who is majorly excellent--recommended Spectro. He put it in at the last oil change. I noticed that it seems to shift easier (I have a 2012 RT SE5). It also seems to run cooler. I asked him about this, and he said the Spectro oil is designed for high rev motorcycles. I still don't understand...:dontknow:...I mean why would Spectro be "better" than BRP branded oil?

Because he sells it!
