There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. Encouraging news and pics of spyder guts

Brian and I went up to Nord Ride (our dealer) to check on the progress of our spyders. Some of the necessary parts needed have arrived and they are actively working on my spyder. In the process of getting into the "guts" and the underbelly of my spyder, Roger, the service manager took some photos to send to BRP. He is just checking on the wear of some of the parts to determine if any replacement should be done or not. Brian would know more about this than I. I really didn't understand anything that was being said. I did take some photos of the spyder guts all laid out that I will share.

The encouraging news as far as I am concerned is this: I asked if any of the issues had anything to do with me riding year round in all weather conditions. We salt our roads here in Michigan and I know how damaging that can be. I was assured that anything they are looking at has nothing to do with weather or salt and I can continue to ride as I would like, once I get my spyder back.

I will try to keep you all updated on the progress. Sorry I don't have more technical information for all you gear heads.

Won't let me look at pics at work but I am excited to hear that your situation will be resolved soon! And I'm glad that riding all year has nothing to do with it! I hope they take those old parts back to BRP's engineering and do some research on them though.

Hey, where's the missing valves?? I'm with you Lamont, I get excited too. I hope they get your Spyder back together soon. So sad seeing it look like that. :yikes:

I thought the trouble was with the output gear. Whats with the heads off and valves out?? I must have missed something.

There was a strange looking piece of metal stuck to the magnet on the oil drain plug. BRP authorized an extensive tear down to look for something broken that the tiny piece of metal might have came from. They couldn't find anything broken or identify what piece the metal may have been a part of.

That was just an excuse to get a naked Spyder :roflblack:

Here are the pics that I took of the Rotax innards.

The service manager questioned the appearance of the intake valve seat and sent some pics off to BRP to see if they felt it was okay / normal or if they wanted him to do something about it. I'm not a motor rebuild guy so even though he was pointing out what he was questioning, I couldn't tell the difference between what he said was normal and what he said looked different. I'm sure my photos aren't good enough resolution or lighting for anyone else to tell just by looking at these.

I only looked in the box that was marked front cylinder and I pulled out the piston from the box just to see what it looked like.

Another thing he questioned was the wear in the oil pump area. He took some pics of that and sent them off to BRP also. I see in my photo (below) you can't really make out the wear marks that he was concerned about but those were visible to me when he pointed them out (upper left side of hole).

Gears and the output shaft. The output shaft splines certainly didn't look right though there weren't any chunks broken off. He reiterated that he feels it's bad metal on the sprocket that is causing this wear. He also said it may be related to the two pieces being on the opposite ends of the tolerances allowed during manufacture that allows excess play in between the two pieces, causing premature wear. He's still waiting to see what BRP thinks may be happening in this case.

I missed it..........what happened to your engine to cause the tear down?

I don't really know if anything specific happened. It just started making this horrible clunking type noise and it was worse upon deceleration. Just a little bit at first and then got worse and worse. The first time I thought I was hearing it was in Gatlinburg. Lamont rode my spyder and didn't hear anything. Brian couldn't hear anything. So I figured what the heck do I know. Rode home and that first week back it just didn't sound right to me. Then it kept getting worse. Had Brian ride it again and he agreed that I should take it in for service. The dealer rode it and that was the beginning of the search for the problem.

Hey Deb & Brian it might have been more cost efficient just for BRP to spring for a new motor? By the time parts and labour are added up I doubt a new motor wouldn't of been a better choice , for you as a customer at least:dontknow: your down time would be reduced.

The complete engine tear down was due to a small piece of metal that they found on the oil drain plug magnet when they were preparing to take the tranny apart to work on the clunking noise. BRP told them to do a thorough investigation as to where the piece might have come from. It wasn't just some random chunk of metal but a small, black, formed piece that would have come from something specific but they didn't recognize exactly what it could have come from.
