elka shock pictures and FRUSTRATION

I just had my dealer install my stage one elka shocks. I bought them at spyderfest and just got them this week and when I got home from 189 mile trip each way to have my dealer install them the RT is bouncing all over the road and I think they are installed upside down. Does anyone have any pictures of the correct installation direction.

I am not can am bashing and do think they are trying to fix the problems, and I knew when I bought a new production product that it could have kinks, but I did not expect it to be completely nonfunctional. I bought an RT that has never been functional. It goes into limp mode at random unpredicatble times and the codes say it is a brake problem and the dealer says can am says it points to riding the brake which is ABSOLUTELY not the case. I think the dealer is trying but are between me and BRP. They cannot do anything without their approval. Also they may be justified in thinking I ride the brake due to the computer codes, but I explained that I do not. I was aware of that possibility when this first started and I treat the brake pedal like it has the plague. I look at my foot every minute or so and I know that that is not the problem. Can am says they cant do anything about it because it does not happen when the dealer has it and is blaming it on me. I dont understand how anyone would think you would haul a machine almost 200 miles each way for it to stay at the dealer for weeks when the problem could be fixed by moving your foot a couple of inches to the right. To tell someone that when they are extremely cautious about it is insulting and frustrating. Then I bought a custom cover that on the website says it is for trailering and have it come apart at the seams within the first 50 miles is frustrating. I was only trailering it to spyderfest because I cannot trust it to drive it anywhere. Then I try to improve the horrible handling machine I paid over $20000 for by adding elka shocks and now they are upside down I think. I am happy for you lucky guys with a spyder that works, but I paid just as much as everyone else and feel kinda cheated. I know everyone on the website says these problems are few and far between and that may be true but that is little consolation when you are the one making the high payments for something you bought brand new that does not work and so far seems to not be fixable mainly because can am thinks I am causing the problem. I really love the concept and will keep at this until hopefully BRP works out the kinks, but I dont know how I can ever prove that I am not riding the brake pedal. I don't ride it enough to be on a long ride and forget about it because it will not go on a long ride. Sorry to rant, but never had any machine with problems like this before then to be told it is my fault when it is NOT really makes it hard to stay positive.

The springs are at the bottom end opposite of the stock configuration. The covers should also be at the bottom. The covers should have been included with the Spyderfest special. Did anyone call you before they shipped to get your weight and Spyder model (RT or RS)? Sounds like the pre-load and rebound dampening is not setup correctly.

If the shocks are installed upside down then YES your ryde will be worse than the stock shocks.....Man so sorry to hear all your problems....just not normal to see stuff like this:gaah:

elka shocks

No one called me or asked me anything about the shocks or wt. they told me at Cowtown during spyderfest I would get guards but did not. There must have been some mixup because I called Cowtown a week or so ago and the girl seemed surprised I have not received my shocks. She sent a pair they had but it is not personalized nor did I get any guards.

I talked to a really nice and helpful guy at Elka today and he had me text him pictures and says they are upside down. No one asked me prior to shipping whether RT or RS or about weight or guards so I dont know if I have the right ones or not. How could I tell. I can see how the dealer made the mistake since they are opposite stock shocks in look. I was really happy with the Elka guy. Talk about customer service.

Stage one is the version they were selling at Spyderfest for the special. It is the same model for both RT and RS. Give John at Elka your weight. He should be able to get you a pre-load setting. Be aware if you get the covers that you will need to use the included tool to rotote the retaining ring enough to completely unload the spring. This will allow you to change to bottom ring with the one that has the three threaded holes for mounting the covers. Also ask for the adjustment for the rebound dampening.

Yes there was a mix up one guy got shocks he didn't pay for....some kinda of mistake in the computer or along thous lines and no you got a set set up for you, they were 300lb springs dialed in at 30 clicks, and setup for a RT, I personaly made the adjustments. As for the guards I appologize, will get them shipped out right away....but you might want to just get a store credit .......or a refund on them, reason being, if the dealer is having this hard of a time instaling them the guards will freak them out, and they could get your shocks out of adjustment....Let me know either way. We will make it work and keep do what we can to keep you happy. I do appoligize for the mix up....the shocks we're sent out just to the wrong guy....not your fault, but thanks for letting us know.

I don't know if you use the cruise much, but if you don't, start using it more. I know on my Spyder, with the cruise on, there is no way I could ride the brakes. My habit is to just move my foot over a bit so as not to touch the brake. IMO if one is riding with the foot over the brake from fear of not being able to brake in time, then a little more practice in panic braking is in order, placing your foot to the side of the brake.

As for the shocks, if a dealer can't install them correctly, what CAN they do mechanically?

elka shocks

I just reversed them myself today.Does anyone know if there is a torque setting for the nuts or just til tight.

There is ABSOLUTELY NO excuse for a self respecting mechanic (dealership) putting these shocks on upside-down. :gaah:

For anyone with any real wrenching experience there are some very obvious, Hit You Upside the Head clues that Elka's aren't your everyday aftermarket shock.

Even if even if the mechanic didn't know anything about Elka's (and that is a sad commentary on any motorcycle dealership - But I digress), the precision and construction of an Elka shock should make you think twice before just slapping them on.

Sometimes you have to wonder what goes on behind those doors that say 'Employees Only'. :dontknow:

The Elka shocks come with an instruction manaul, adjustment tools and labels in a plastic bag. Make sure you get this from the dealer that installed them for you (upside down). The book has good info for making adjustments and trouble-shooting problems. I don't have a torque wrench so I just tightened about what I thought the original was set at. They are not coming off but I probably should make sure with a torque wrench.

What does 300lb spring mean. I weight about 205 and sometimes ride with my wife. Just driving around the neighborhood they seem fine. As far as guards go I dont think I will bother with trying to do them. thanks for all your help.

Sounds like you got the wrong setup. You need to call Len or Dan at Cowtown and get this figured out. Don't worry. They will get you what you need.

help from this website

Its great to have a website like this with so many helpful people. Knowledge and information is slow getting to a lot of dealerships because of the newness of this product and its complexity. Thanks to all the spyder people here that make you not feel so alone when you do have a problem.

A few Spyders with the limp mode/"riding the brake" codes have had the brake switch set too tight, causing the codes without the foot touching the brake. I would have the dealer check this. They can call BRP tech support for more info.

300lb springs are more or less the norm for the RT riding 1 or 2 up. Some have gone with 250lb, but those would be real lightweights, where I went with 325lb not because of being heavy (same as you), but because I like to pound the corners in our part of the world. And, yes find those instructions and the special tools that were with the shocks.

300lb springs are the right setup. This is len from cowtown and for your weight and setup 300lb springs with 30 to 40 clicks are about perfect..... Just turn the dial at the bottom of the shock clock wise for firmer and counter for softer. You should be in great shape. Out of well over a hundered sets of Elka's this is what over 90 percent have been setup like. Glad there working.
