EBC brake pads & rotors...

Yes, new pads installed last summer. In the spring, I put in CRC, helped a little but did not last long. I just got this feeling I may have more a hardware/rotor problem though. I have no way of really testing them to make sure they are not warped but will figure something out. Until then, I just try not to break..gotten pretty good at it...lol.

I put brand new rear brake rotor on mines and it still squeaks learn to live with it lol

Did you try the new pads?

Doc, did you paint your rear break housing..I notice it is very shinny??? What did you use, just tape it off and silver paint? I want to make mine black..or even blue..

The "gold" pads are the old type, and the "black" pads are the new type pads for the SE5/SM5, both BRP parts. :doorag:

I am talking about the entire housing. The first, you have the same old grey looking with white spots like I do, in the second pic with your new pads, you have a nice shiny housing.

Before and after wash/detailed....twice a year bath...:opps:

I know I can get a straight answer. I took my spyder in for the 6000 mi service a month ago. I was told I had about 40% brakes left. I am a complete novice but trying to learn. Will I need just the pads or the rotors as well. I see one person saying $89 for the pads and another says $450 for rotors and pads. Big difference. I have 9000 miles on the spyder now. What will I need:dontknow:
I guess my next question would be: How difficult is it to do it yourself?
Thanks
Dick

40% brake pad at 6000 miles is hard to believe. I've got over 16k on my spyder and I've got plenty of pad left. I don't ride that easy but not as hard as Doc! :yikes:

You don't need rotors unless you just want a questionable upgrade or you just like to spend money.

Where did you get this price. I see 57.00 for each side in the front and 33 for rear. I have done everything under the sun to get rid of my squeel, nothing and I mean nothing myself or the dealer have done has helped. I am almost 20K miles and on the second set of brakes now.

As for the person that asked how easy to install, very easy, easier than a car for me but that could be me.

Actually, I've found them for less than $30 a set (you will need 2 front sets and 1 rear set). I'm a bit curious because they have both listed for the same price but the fronts list for about twice the price as the rear. If you get them let us know if the price holds.

The fronts and rears are different so don't get 3 of the same thing.

Anybody try these ECB brakes yet? Did you go organic or SD? What is SD, is that like semi metalic?

SD pads are "Sintered" which is another name for metallic.

As far as I can tell it is a moot point because I have not been able to find a metalic pad for the Spyder. EBC makes only the organic version (which is not necessarily a bad thing).

Stainless steel rotors are HIGHLY recommended if you are running Sintered pads. I don't know what the Spyder runs but it probabaly is not Stainless and that is why EBC does not make the metalic pads for them.

Thanks, I certainly don't ride that hard, however I am a big guy so I probably put a lot of strain on the system. I thought 40% was a little low for the miles also but:dontknow:
Again, thanks for the input.

Good info to have.

Make sure and bed them in after installing also....... find a nice stretch of backroads... get up to 60-80 mph and slam the brakes hard to come to a complete stop. Repeat 4-6 times, then pull over and let them cool down--- don't set the parking brake during the cooldown.

I do this about once a month and have not had squeaks for a long time now. Any time they start to make noise--- a good brake in takes care of it.

Going to order some of these EBC's to have ready to go.

Wait a sec...you think we don't have stainless steel rotors and we're running metallic pads? I think we should find this information...this is important...I'll shoot Carlo an email and have him ask the engineers.

As far as metallic vs. organic, there is a huge difference...metallic will last far longer and give you greater braking power...I prefer semi-metallic as you get a nice blend. I would not use organic pads...they're soft and increase braking times...

My old BMW has had metallic on it since I bought it 10 years ago...have barely worn with over 30,000 miles...rotors look okay too.

I'd go with stainless rotors and metallic pads any day of the week...less worry and the best braking power...

I don't know what the rotor material is and I don't know what the pad material is on the stock Spyder. I'm just saying there must be a reason EBC offers only an organic pad and does not make a sintered version, which they do for most other applications.

It may have nothing to do with the rotor but it would not make sense to me if the stock pads were metallic that EBC would not make a metallic version.

You're right, stainless steel rotors and metallic pads give you the best braking. Metallic pads last longer but are very abrasive and will eat up soft rotors not made from stainless. It's cheaper to replace pads than rotors.

The way to get metallic stopping without going to more spendy stainless rotors is to oversize both the rotors and pads for the application. Don't know if this is what BRP did or not.

I doubt that EBC would go to the trouble to make a product that did not work well.

Someone will get this information and then we'll know what the stock Spyder comes with.

Here is some good reading if you want more info on the 3 basic brake pad materials. EBC does not like Semi-Metallic pads.

Well,

Organic would make sense from a third party cause it ain't gonna squeal. This is what we're complaining of, so it makes sense to make a product that will certainly make no noise....what you get is a very dirty rim/tire as they break down quickly and create a lot of brake dust...yuck! Organic tend to make a mess...

As far as what we have, I shot Carlo an email...he usually gets back to me within a week...I'll report back as soon as I hear.

I like the strong braking power of the Spyder...I don't want to compromise that with a softer organic pad. Let's wait to hear what our bike has...

As far as semi-metallic goes, this is their take as they make the two extremes. Semi-metallic are fine as are ceramic...

EBC Front Kevlar Brake Pads

Fixing your link..try this:

http://www.denniskirk.com/jsp/tpl/c...CIV0?store=Main&category=4&np=&mmyId=17400003

Also, they only have 1 of each left..front is on back order. I don't need new brakes and 90 bucks in a chance to get rid of the noise is just not worth it yet..key world is yet.

Hhmmm....that link worked fine when I put it up cause I checked.

This should work. But you're right, a great price isn't much good if they are out of stock.

It will be interesting to see what Carlo says. I don't think anyone wants to give up braking power to eliminate the occasional noise but I could be wrong there.

It does not make sense to me that an aftermarket company with the reputation of EBC would make a lesser product (stopping power wise). But you may be right, it may be specifically to eliminate the squeal.

I didn't say I do not like Semi-Metallic, just that EBC does not. They can make anything they want and I'm surpised that they don't make Semi-Metallic and that they don't like them either.

Maybe it would cut into their Sintered products. But there has to be a reason for it.

I hope someone that puts the EBC's on their Spyder will give us a review.

Ordered, they had one front brake pad in stock but i really need the backs, I got the spring put today and will see how the fronts workout getting smashed into corners when I get them both in. WHY IS BRP not paying me for this kind of testing???? carlos I will send you my address for my LARGE check, and also put Aaron Calyton in charge of US sales.

Let us know how they work! You can let Carlo know too if that check ever shows up! :roflblack:
