DPS Recall

Hey Spyderwolf,
Who are you using for dealer work? I have been taking mine to the folks in Columbia, SC. They have been doing a good job, compared to the so-called dealer in Augusta.(they couldn't fix a little red wagon)

Hey Carl! I will most likely use either Columbia Powersports on Fernandina Road, or head back down to the dealer in Statesboro on Hwy 80. Both of them are about the same distance for me. I was considering giving the dealer in Augusta a shot, since it is only supposed to be a 2 hour job, but am still very leery after the other experiences I have heard about. :gaah:

My DPS is installed... What a great difference.
For those who have them installed and for those pending, I would like to caution all for the sensistivity of the steering above 60MHR, It took me about 50 miles to relearn the feel for spyder steering. However, I will watch it tomorrow and Friday to ensure I have been retrained.

So are you saying there is more steering sensitivity at high speed? I had my dps replaced the first time around and never had the lockup or any other problem after that.
I took a 400 mile trip through a bunch of twisties last weekend and really had to manhandle turns at high speed. I could detect power steering at low speed but there sure didn't seem like any power assistance above 50mph. Also noticed a fair amount of handlebar vibration at 60-70 mph but there is no odd wear on the front tires. Running @ 18psi.
Guess I'll get it all checked out when I do the latest recall.

I feel the sensitivity, but it's not one that you may be thinking. It is a lot more responsive (sensitive) to your commands. To me it's more than ever like a car power steering. Mine seemed to have had a little slack. The new DPS doesn't. Just get it done. It is all for the better.

:2thumbs:Talk about a GREAT service Department. I got a call from my local dealer to bring my Spyder in Friday as he was getting replacement DPS units in. I haven't even received my letter from Can Am yet. And this from a dealer I didn't even purchase my Spyder from. A big round of applause for Bradford Marine Sherwood Arkansas.

I'd like to talk about my GREAT service department at Talbot Powersports in Easton, MD.:firstplace: I called them last Wednesday when I heard about the recall on spyderlovers and they replacement DPS units today. I received my letter from Can Am yesterday. Please help me in giving them a big round of applause for Talbot's Customer Service.
Thanks
Don :ohyea:

Got letter today.

I got my letter in the mail today. I hope I have better luck with my dealer getting it fixed than I have with them getting me the cover that goes in the middle of the handle bars that cover wires. It was missing when I bought it in May and every time I am up there they make some excuse. They told me on the phone it was in and when I went up there they said that they couldn't find it. :gaah::gaah:

:yikes: Star Cruiser i also go to Snow City and they told me they want the :spyder2: overnite :gaah:
Hmm i hope they don't change thier mind on me. I hate having to arange for aride there and another back. I usually have service done while I wait. Sometimes it is 3 or 4 hours, but it is still better than an hour each way (twice). Thanks for the heads up - just in case so I can confirm before I go.

Ditto - Service in Ark is GREAT!

:2thumbs:I agree with your comments. While on vacation we experienced the DPS issue and googled dealers to find the closest service department. It turned out to be Bradford Marine in North Little Rock They knew about the DPS recall and other service bulletins. While there we told them of other issues, like the side panels coming loose shortly after we started our trip. We had temporarly fixed the grommet issue, but we did not want to proceed on our trip with taking a through look at our bike so we ended up some unplanned down time and used it to googling about the Spyder. We were not happy that we had just bought the bike a couple of weeks earlier and the grommet bulletin had been out for a few months, yet our dealer had not fixed the problem before selling the bike. In fact we had the 600 mile checkup and told them we were leaving for the Arkansa trip. Oh well, this has been a learning experince. We have learned some dealers and service departments are better than others. Bradford Marine has 4 locations in Arkansas and the one in North Little Rock has a service department, manager and tech, that are knowledgable, friendly. They helped make our trip memoriable and safe. Even with the problems we have experienced with the Spyder RT we are having fun with it an the trailer. It turned out to be the best vacation ever.

I've ridden about 125 miles since having the recall done on my RT. The main difference I notice is that the steering requires a little less effort at highway speeds. Especially on gentle turns it doesn't take much more than thinking about turning and it's done. On 70 mph, 90 degree sweepers, you still have to turn it but it takes less effort than before. I wasn't having any trouble before the recall, but I agree with Dudley, it's all good. Get it done.

I was hoping someone with an RT would say otherwise. The last thing the RT needs is more sensitive steering. If they ever get a DPS for mine, I'll try it, but more sensitive steering could be the straw that broke the camel's back. It is is noticeably different, the RT will be gone. The handling is marginal as it is.

Scotty, I rode an RT-S for about 150 miles. It felt like the steering was too loose. The new DPS is not "loose". The best I can describe it is that it feels more like a car's power steering. Responsive, but controlled. Stiffer, but smoother. I know that doesn't make sense, but you have to drive it to feel for yourself. It's "much more better".

My DPS is at the dealer and will be installed today at 15:30. They are going to check out the faulty rear shock at the same time. No rebound at all.
Tonight, I will put a nice long ryde on the spyder to see what difference the new DPS makes and post up my findings.:thumbup:

Got my letter two days ago. Dealer says no replacement units in hand, does not know when to expect receipt, will call when he knows something, and its unsafe to ride in the meantime. 400 miles since new, and I am shut down. Not an auspicious start for my relationship with BRP. :gaah:

:gaah:If you have not had a problem with your steering I would dive your:spyder2: until the dealer calls.

Reread your letter. BRP does not say the Spyder is unsafe to ride. Those are your dealer's unfortunate words. You need to be aware, and prepared, but there is no need to panic. BRP would have taken stronger steps and removed all Spyders from the road, if that were the case. We have all been riding around with these steering units for up to three years. They have replaced very few. You still see Spyders on the road. That should tell you something.

No one should tell you to ignore the dealer and ride. But, we have had a 2008 SE5 since November, 2008. We drove around the country last year, put 13,624 miles in 7.5 weeks. We had the first update done in MN, the second one in Riverside, CA. We have never had any issues with the DPS and now have 42k miles. The 2nd Generation DPS (2G DPS) was installed this last Wednesday. Whether or not you ride is totally up to you. I just posted to let you know how our Spyder has performed.

Scotty. I have a few miles now on the new DPS. Maybe the rt's are different, but the steering is more stable now, without being overly sensitive. Top speed of only 65 so far but it was rock stable at that speed. Tomorrow I need to get out and ryde some more, but all initial thoughts are that BRP got it right this time.
