• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

My dealer installed the DPS on Wed, we did a 150 mile mountain trip on Thursday. The steering is greatly improved. The steering is now neutral and even on hard turns there is no over steering.

I have some issues with the oil change, I think it was over filled. The manual says at room temp the dip stick is to indicate mid way between add and full. It now shows over the full mark. Should I remove oil down to what the manual says?
I don't check it when hot as it is hot and foaming and hard to get a good reading. This is the second time from this dealer that the oil was over full. I don't want to take back to the dealer, they always lost the groments that hold the side panel and I don't found they are missing until I get home.

Question is do I bring the oil level down?:bowdown:

I the future I will do my own oil change.:2thumbs:

:dontknow: I have an 08 GS Sm5 The oil has to be checked when hot.
Normal running temps, let idle 30 seconds, turn engine off then check.

The manual says that it can be checked cold as well as hot,
What do the techys say?

When I had it serviced in Vermont for the 600mile check, the oil level checked out correctly cold after they changed it. Not at the NC dealer, both times it is always high when cold.

You guys must have a different manual than I do. Mine says oil is checked at "full operating temperature".

I agree with Scotty. The oil must be at operating temperature. If you check the oil when its room temperature and it reads 1/2 between the Full and Ad, then you are definitely over filled. The manual has always instructed the Spyder owner to check the oil when at operating temperature. If you see bubbles on the stick, it's not a rocket science to check the oil. You have about a one inch window. When checking the oil cold, you should not even see oil on the dip stick. The oil will settle both in the oil tank and the base of the engine. Check it at operating temperature.

If you know its overfilled you can purchase an oil extractor as in the link.
I use it to pump all the oil out of the tank before I pull the drain plug and very little drips out. Its a handy tool if you own anything mechanical.

Sorry to keep kicking this dead horse, I am still confused. I have the 2010 Spyder RT manual. See the note at the top of page 125. It reads:

Note: The oil level dipstick is accurate when the oil temp is at 176 degs. If the oil level is checked when the oil is at room temp 68degs, the proper oil level indication is half way between the lower(ADD) and upper(F) marks on the dipstick. This must be considered to prevent overfilling the oil tank.

It seems checking at room temp would be the preferred way to check the oil level, knowing that it must be half way between Add and Full.

Interesting reference. I'm gonna have to compare my hard manual. The pre-production version I have on my hard drive says no such thing (on page 123). I'm also quite sure it is not in the early RS manual. The shop manual does not say so, either.

I'm not sure I believe what they say. I have compared hot vs. cold and the stick shows nothing more than a drop, cold...if it shows at all. Usually there is nothing since the check leaks a bit and wet sumps the engine. That is why you have to start it and run several seconds, just before you check it.

BTW, don't forget that the correct way to check a Spyder is with the dipstick screwed in. If it reads the right level when just stuck in the hole, it is too high.

BRP could relieve all this confusion by just putting a sight glass in the oil tank.

What you're referencing is from the oil change page, which is after the oil level verification page. BTW, the '08 manual doesn't mention room temperature readings, only '09 and up.
Checking levels at room temps would make sense after an oil change to get a fairly accurate reading without having to completely warm the engine (if your dealer does the oil change for instance). Unfortunately it looks like your dealer didn't follow these instructions.
