• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

DPS failed, new DPS installed, 1:55 error code (whatever that is), overheating, etc.

2009 Spyder RS SE5 -- original DPS part failed on interstate and trailered to dealer for replacement of recall unit. Also asked dealer to perform routine service. Bike has 5500 miles only. Left dealership with bike feeling overly nimble on steering (to point of easily oversteering), made it 5 miles down the road and bike didn't "feel right." Rode back to dealer, noticed front right tire might be a little low. Got there, they added just a smidge of air to tire. 25 miles later, in route back home, DPS Fault message came on dash, along with Limp Home Mode, indicator light (left side of dash), and also engine light. Pulled over and called the dealer; told them what was going on and that bike smelled like it was frying, maybe an oil smell. Noticed front right tire looking slick on interior 1/4 of tread --- had not left the dealership like that. To make a long story short, bike now at home and waiting for the dealer to finish with a boat show before they'll even talk to me. DPS Fault message no longer displaying (understandable since bike isn't in motion), but now have a message of "1:55 Fault" ----- would like to know what that stands for. Engine also overheats in under 5 minutes, to near explosion level. WHAT COULD HAVE HAPPENED TO THE BIKE??? In addition to DPS unit changed out, they also installed the electrical ground wire to the shift (another recall) and did the ECM (??) software update. ANYONE WITH INFO OR IDEAS?

Sorry to hear about all your troubles. Check back tomorrow mornin and I'm sure someone will have some ideas for you. The really smart Spyderlovers go to bed early and probably won't see your post until the morning. Good luck.

:welcome: :agree: with the above. I am not one of the mechanical people. You should have some good answers by tomorrow.

The lite steering is normal with the new DPS, That you will get used to after a few miles, But the other stuff going on doesn't make sense to me, Your dealer did something wrong:dontknow:[Apparently]:popcorn:

In the RS SE5 manual there is no code ending with ..55. Take a picture of the display showing the fault code.

Having no luck uploading a pic to this site. But hearing that there is not a code ending "55," the digital display could be VSS Fault ---- if so the V is slanted to the right and not filled incompletely, which makes it look like "1:55 Fault." Hope that helps. I will continue to try to get the pic uploaded.

BIKE ISSUES

IN ANSWER TO: WHAT COULD HAVE HAPPENED TO MY BIKE........THAT'S EASY......YOU TOOK IT TO THE DEALER........BUT SERIOUSLY I FEEL FOR YOU AND HOPE THE ISSUES ARE RESOLVED TO YOUR SATISFACTION.....MIKE.....

This is "VSS Fault" not "1:55". Ask the dealer where you replaced the DPS to repeat the "DPS replacement procedure" conform BRP instructions.

Thank you! Will do! But this shouldn't affect the engine temp..... I think there are multiple problems going on. I am non-mechanical and just want to make sure I talk sense to the dealer, particulary since the General Manager of the dealership implied that whatever is going on with the bike after leaving the shop was due to some fault of mine, nothing that they did. That didn't set well with me, to say the least!

Welcome to the forum.

Agreed - the new DPS either has a fault in it and another one is required, or the installation by the Dealer was off from what BRP instructs the Dealers to do with the new DPS.

Back to the Dealer to be sure they make things right. Maybe a good idea to pop down to their boat show also to make an appearance and setup a time an actual time/date for you to drop your Spyder back to them. ;) This is a safety concern - Safety Recall.

All the best and keep us updated.

Thank you, and yes, I very much understand that this is a safety concern. Wish I could show up at the boat show, but the General Manager has stated that he will touch base with me on Friday, and we would go from there. The bike is parked in my garage and will not move until they agree to take it back and fix it. I live approximately 50 miles from the dealership, so it will not be riden there, it will be trailered. Not sure with the overheating issue that I would make it too far anyway, LOL.

I'm feeling a bit more optimistic, thanks to your responses. I love this bike and my imagination had gone wild, thinking they had totally fried the bike. Let's hope it's all repairable.

Other than just getting back on and riding, once they correct this and I'm not getting the error messages, do I have any way of knowing whether or not the work was performed to BRP standards?

The DPS and VSS errors are likely a result of the DPS installation. Most likely the tech failed to recalibrate the steering sensors properly. The engine temp is probably a different issue. It could have been caused or triggered by the tech when he had things apart or during reassembly, or it could be circumstance, and unrelated. A good shop would apologize, and look at the problem before placing blame. I'd talk to the owner of the dealership, calmly, and explain what happened, that you did nothing to cause the problem, and express your unhappiness with the treatment the service advisor gave you. Hopefully they will take a thorough second look, at their expense, and correct the problem ASAP...in the interest of customer relations if nothing else.

I see you had 6000 mile service and they cleaned the battery connections and cleaned and adjusted the throttle body. If battery connections are not tight can cause problems and they lubed the throttle cables can cause the burnt oil smell. Almost anything canbe fixed. If you have towing on your insurance they may cover the towing, but the dealer should be paying for the towing. Make shure to write or call BRP's Customer Assistance Center tell them that the dealer is to busy with his boat show to take care of your problem and tell them of the problems your having with your Can-am Spyder. Have your VIN number and engine id number ready. It shows in Operator's Guide where the ID # are located, also the address and phone number of BRP's Customer assistance center. That's IMHO. Good luck and let us know how things work out.

Extract the error code.

My local dealer service appointments are 7-10 business days out. I know how you feel. The forum might have a dealer-free answer with a little more information. By all means this is a dealer problem and you should not repair yourself, but when it comes to VSS & DPS faults, you can never learn enough valuable information.

EXTRACT THE CODE
1) Drive the bike until you have an active code. If overheating is a concern, don't let the temp go too high or get too far from home.
2) Stop and leave the engine running in nuetral.
3) Use the MODE button to select the "Hr" total hour meter.
4) Push the high beam flash button 5 times within two seconds.
5) All active codes will be displayed, one at a time.
6) Record the codes. Myself or other forum members will gladly define the codes for you.

The more you know about the codes when you do take it back to the dealer, less chance they have of talking around the real problem, taking you out of their repair scheduling again and forcing another visit.

Good luck,
Spydersense

Good news is that when I got home from work today, my post was noticed here by BRP and a representative left 2 contact phone numbers for me to call him, a case file number assigned to my issue, AND, informed me that my bike has extended service coverage on it including roadside assistance/towing (I had forgotten I even had that ---- ), all waiting for me on my answering machine. Feels really good to know they care and are willing to intervene in this matter. Thank you everyone and thank you BRP!!! I'll update again when I know more.
