There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. Down shift SE5 problems.

I was leaving work yesterday when my 2011 RS would not go into reverse.:dontknow: I held it for like 3-5 seconds and it went. then all the way home up shifting was normal and down shifting... 3-5 seconds to respond. Any ideas? :helpsmilie::helpsmilie: I was wondering if it was a paddle issue or a blip(?) senser of some thing else. I am going top the dealer after work and was wondering.

Just taking a stab here...

Sounds like a re-program from Buds is in order.

One comment. If the bike is still moving and an attempt to get into reverse has happened before coming to a complete stop, I noticed ours to take FOREVER (3-5 seconds) to finally go into reverse (Once completely stopped and embarrassed because it usually happens to me at the USPS when getting our business mail, with a lot of folks staring at me... lol). Now if we are at a complete stop, it goes into reverse quite quickly. This may be the situation you are experiencing.

Now as far as downshifting taking time, the RPM's must be above I think 2500 or 3000 before the computer kicks in and does not allow it as it is already in the process and will always override our input until it has completed its cycle.

Now if you are talking about downshifting from say 5000 rpms to a lower gear for passing or spirited movement... This is not normal and should shift right away, and is a clear candidate for a trip to the dealer.

It could be as simple as a low oil situation :dontknow:

Good luck!! And :welcome:

As for shifting into reverse, you must have your foot on the brake and the handle bars not moving. Don't know anything about the downshift problem. Good Luck

Teddy Suggests Checking Your Oil

I know on Teddy's 2010 RT-S, if its low at all, off the High Mark on the Dipstick, we can have shifting issues :opps:

I just check the oil b4 every long ryde, so not a big deal, tho I wish BRP made checking the oil a little more user friendly

:pJust our experience & two cents:p

this is the way my spyder was acting until yesterday. I had to stop to get it to go into gear or R but as I would slow I could hit the down shift and it would go down immediately, now I have to hit it and hold it for a few seconds. then once the RPMs go up a bit the down shifts are a lot better in fact almost normal.

CyncySpyder;
the oil is a good idea I would have tried that but after the oil change it did not help.

here's more of the story...

I took it into the dealer tonight on my way home from work for the first service and they think it may be the solenoids(SP) they did the 1st service and changed the oil it was still doing it. The tech was able to do some testing and he said that if he revs the Spyder a bit it then goes into R quickly but just sitting there if we try to do it normally. I left it over night and hope it is resolved tomorrow. thank you for all of the responses.

I hope to be on my spyder soon I guess I will have to take the ER-6N tomorrow. Thanks every one.

and dave; say hey to teddy for me that is one cool dog, I have been watching the updates but just have not post. I like the vids and the pics, I miss the Mid West area. :spyder:have fun on Teddy's Spyder.

If he revs the engine and it works better, I would have him do a wet oil pressure test. Low oil pressure at idle can cause these symptoms.

Glad to hear the dealer is looking at it for you, and hope they get it resolved quickly. Best of luck.

This is true, but be aware that, in the case of the SE5, we are talking about 2 different oil pressures: the engine oil pressure and the hydraulic control module (HCM) pressure. Both must be correct, and can be checked. The HCM contains it's own oil pump, which normally boosts engine oil to 174 PSI for use in clutching and gear shifting. The HCM filter requires regular replacement, also.

Thank you for this information. I hope the solenoids fix it but if that does not work then I will have them go in that direction. I did not have the problem when shifting normally until Tuesday and I thought it was because it was raining all day. The spyder sat in the parking lot and that was when this whole thing started. I told the tech just so he had all of the facts but when he mentioned getting it to work when he rev'ed it, that takes the electrical out of the picture.

As for the filter I have less than 1000 miles on the spyder and it is getting its first service. I don't remember the mileage but they could not get me in sooner. Is that one of the things they change at the first service? He did all of the testing after changing my oil and doing the first service.

thank you Neez and NancysToy, you guys are a big help.

Yes, an oil change will be included in the first service. They will be looking for any metal shavings or any other sign of damage at that time.

Thanks for that clarification.

I got a call back and the solenoids did not fix it but there was a transmission switch that got wet. They cleaned it out and re attached it and said it should not do it again. They did order one though if it does give me any more trouble, so I guess the weather was the problem? I am going to get it when I get off. :clap:I hope it just keeps working though. :sour: thank you again for all of the help.

Glad to hear they sorted the issue out. Hopefully that is all it was and you won't have any more issues with it. Best of luck!

SE5 shifting

Had a similar problem with my 2008 GS last week-end. After a nice ride with my daughters boyfriend we washed the spyders. His is a SM5 and mine a SE5. After rinsing with a hose we started them up for a quick 50MPH blow dry. Mine refused to shift out of reverse. Tried a couple of restarts but still the same thing. During that 2 or 3 minutes of idling the engine temp showed 2 bars. Shut it down and went in to eat. After eating I went out to mechanically move the shift rod but first started it up again for one more try. Shifted without any problems. I figured I must have gotten something wet. Now I know not to spray everything down with the garden hose and to check the transmission switch, perhaps spray it with some WD-40 as that was what it was developed for.
